Retro Fitness Reviews (494)

Review: I have signed the cancelation papers three months ago and was told at that time if paid in full I would be released at the end of November, according to Retros collection agency I am scheduled to be charged on my [redacted] credit card $29.99 12/**/2014 for a renew contract, $19.99 on the [redacted] of every month for a year in addition $19.99 6/**/2015 for a six month processing fee. If ABC Financial corporation is not contacted by the [redacted] of Retro Fitness they will keep billing my credit card for the next 12 months. I have been waiting for a [redacted] or [redacted] to return my many phone calls regarding the cancelation issue but and I have not received one e-mail or courtesy call back.As of yesterday 11/**/2012 I have left another message for the [redacted] or [redacted] to clear up this matter. According to the staff they are not authorized to remove anyone for auto renew and only the [redacted] can do so. I am paid in full for a year and fulfilled my contract obligation. I want to be taken off auto renew asap from Retro Fitness.Desired Settlement: I would like for the [redacted] to contact their financial collection group and take me off of auto renew. I would also like a call or e-mail from the [redacted] that this matter has been resolved.

Review: I was a member of Retro Fitness for a very long time and had no issues whatsoever. My 1-year contract ended in the Winter of 2013. This past March of 2014, I moved out of town and no longer had a need for the membership. I attempted to cancel the membership at the gym but was given a huge runaround about how they could not cancel my membership. Instead, I would have to send a letter to an address in the midwest requesting a cancellation, which I went ahead and did. I never heard anything back so I assumed that I was in the clear until I noticed that the charges would not stop. I called my credit card company and they put a block on the merchant from charging my card. I recently received a credit report that shows that my credit has dropped by ~25 points in the last 2 months because they have sent my information to a collections agency. This is absolutely outrageous especially due to the fact that I have not received any mail or phone calls from them, but now my account was sold to a collections agency. I am furious and enraged and will take further legal action if they do not remedy this. Alongside of this, there is a long list of hundreds of complaints about Retro Fitness when doing a [redacted] search. They are running an illegitimate operation and action should be taken against them.Desired Settlement: I expect them to contact the collections agency and have them reverse the information being sent to the Credit Bureau. This is the first and foremost thing as my credit SHOULD NOT be affected by the lack of honesty of this establishment. I will settle whatever debts I owe under the condition that anything sent to the Bureau is cleared and I get written confirmation that my account is FULLY CANCELED.

The business has responded, please read below.

The member [redacted] was informed of his cancellation terms that he has signed off for when he originally signed up. He was advised to send a certified letter to ABC Financial, the company that handles all of our member's billing, again something that is stated in the agreement and informed to the member at the time of signing up. According to what my employee has documented from the conversation he had with [redacted] over the phone on February **, 2014, [redacted] stated that he would not send the letter and that he planned to just call his credit card company to not allow the charges to go through. The employee advised him that it would not be a good idea because a collection issue would most likely result. ABC Financial had attempted to send letters to [redacted] and call him as well but they received nothing back. After three months of payments have not gone through, a collection preview is reported to myself and I attempt to contact members to warn the m of the delinquent payments. When getting to [redacted]'s account, the email was not correct and there was no phone number listed to contact him to help him avoid going to collections. We do everything we can to help avoid collections and make it our duty to be very informative of how to cancel and [redacted] was fully aware of how to cancel but his lack of action on his part is why the account went to collections. He was advised how to cancel and to not take his card off file. ABC Financial and myself do everything we can on our end to help the members and will even make extra effort to try to keep members from cancelling but we are always informative of how to do so and our policies. I have now contacted [redacted] at the number provided to try to help him but have yet to receive a response.

Review: I had a contract from jan 2013 - Jan 2014, Then, Retro came to a health fair at my job and was advertising a special if they get so many people to sign up they will give discounts. I was already was a memeber, I did not want the special offer becasue my memebership was going to run out Jan 2014. They automatically signed me up for the new discounted rate and extended my contract from Oct 2013- Oct 2014 with an automatic renewal, without my permission or authorization. I continued to pay for some time the discounted rate, thinking my contract was up in Jan 2014. They continued to make deductions from my checking account. In May I called to officially cancel my memebership which should have ended back in Jan 2014. They told me my contract with them is NOW until Oct 2014, they charged my card again this month after the email cancellation. I told them I never authorized this and to immediately stop deducting from my debit card. They said they will continue to deduct until the contract is over Oct 2014.Desired Settlement: I would like to be refunded the last 2 months since I asked them to cancel the memebership and they extended my contract without authorization.

Response:

Due to member changing membership type, expiration date of the agreement was extended. Although her signed legally binding agreement does not expire until September 2014, as a courtesy, we have cancelled her agreement.

Review: First I called retro fitness to freeze my account which is a monthly cost of $5 in the middle of august 2014 to February of 2015; afterwards I called in the end of January 2015 to cancel my account. I spoke to a friendly employee by the name of [redacted] in regards to closing my account. He was very kind as to explain to me all the simple steps of terminating my account. He had informed me that all I had to do was send a letter by certified mail stating my full name, address, my account number, stating I wanted to terminate my membership and pay a cancellation fee of $34. The same day I had paid the cancellation fee and sent the letter stating those facts. In March I read my statements; I saw charges on three of my accounts which were unauthorized which two of them I don't know how they got a hold of. I called retro fitness on March **, 2015 and spoke to [redacted] in regards to my account that I thought was already terminated. [redacted] told me unfortunately she could not help me and that I had to speak to the manager. She told me that there are two managers [redacted] and [redacted]. She told me [redacted] was going to be in on March **, 2015 anywhere from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and was going to give me a call to solve this issue. I waited all day and called retro fitness myself on March **, 2015 and spoke to [redacted], he stated that the account was not terminated; the account cannot be canceled due to any terms until 05/**/2015 and is still frozen till this day. Also my contract was automatically renewed without any confirmation from retro fitness or a renewal date stating it was renewed; the renewal date is not stated in my contract. Afterwards I received and email of my contact being renewed. I tried to explain to him that I have statements with charges of not only retro fitness charging me a $ 5 monthly fee for it being frozen but also various unauthorized charges including my monthly dues for my annual membership which is $31.33. When I made the agreement to sign up the total cost for my monthly membership with taxes was $31.33 which I have in printed format. Instead I noticed today that I am being overcharged an amount of $32.33 monthly. [redacted] did not believe me and told me that the other manager [redacted] would call me back. I went to Retro fitness at around 6:30 to see if this matter can be resolved in person instead because over the phone it wasn't going anywhere. I spoke to [redacted] and showed her all the statements I had. She was very kind but unfortunately could not help me and told me I would only have to speak with [redacted] the manager. I simply do not see this matter being resolved because this sounds more like a cat and mouse game.Desired Settlement: a full refund for all of the unauthorized charges made to three of my accounts and a signed agreement of retro fitness terminating my contract before May **, 2015.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me and the matter has been resolved.

Sincerely,

Review: Continuation of monthly billing after membership was paid out And cancelled. Keeps assuring me it is cancelled and continues to bill me.Desired Settlement: Refund for past 2 months of unauthorized charges and finalization of cancelation.

Review: I had spoken to a manager, Ezra around October/November 2014 regarding cancelling my membership because I no longer wanted to be a member due to my high risk pregnancy due to previous miscarriage. Ezra told me that I still had a few months left to my membership which expires 1/**/15, therefore I couldn't cancel. I said I understood but I wanted to just pay off the remaining months of my membership and then cancel. He said he was willing to freeze my account from November-April and then after I give birth in April, to give him a call and pay off the remaining balance of the membership. They reached out to me in April 2015 regarding my expired credit card. I called him in May 2015 and provided him my new credit card # in which I authorized to charge me for two months remaining of my membership (December $20.89 & January $20.89 monthly dues). Ezra never stated that he was extending my membership by freezing my account. Fast forward to September 2015, Im angry that retro fitness continues to charge my credit card despite of my agreement with Ezra, the manager. My contract agreement clearly said it expires 1/**/15 and I told Ezra I wanted out. Ezra agreed to make a final transaction on May 2015 but never cancelled my membership nor delete my credit card information. Today, Doug, new manager said he was not authorize to refund previous charges. Doug stated that whenever the contract is frozen, it automatically extends the contract despite of the reason or previous agreement. Medical excuse such as high risk pregnancy is not a valid reason to cancel membership. But then adds that he does not want to based on the fact that these were previous charges. Doug also said that whatever agreement I had wth Ezra is invalid because he no longer works for Retro Fitness and did not want to discuss it anymore, then hung up the phone. I had repeatedly asked to refund the unauthorized charges and was denied. He finally agreed to terminate my membership but still refuses to refund me my money.I feel taken advantage of and mistreated by this manager and company. But most of all, I deserve to get my money back from the unauthorized charges they made after May 2015. Side note:They made me pay for my membership despite of providing a doctor's note stating my high risk pregnancy medical condition based on previous miscarriage.Desired Settlement: I'm requesting for my credit card to be refunded of previous unauthorized charges made after May 2015 up to August 2015.

Review: I made a request with a representative in July of 2015 to avoid having my contract renewed in Novemeber. I was not given paperwork to fill out. In Novemeber of 2015 I received a bill. I went to the club and I was told that only the manager Courtney could handle the situation. Courtney never returns calls or messages. I called ABC Financial services and they stated that they could not make any changes until the manager rectified the problem. I have gone into the club on numerous occasions and Courtney isn't there. The supervisor found a notation of my request but again said only the manager can handle the situation. Today when I called ABC financial, their supervisor again called the club and Courtney magically appeared stating that there is no record and if I have a record(which I was never given) then they could send it to ABC; if not I would have to pay the balance for services I didn't receive and then request yet again a 60 day notification of cancellation.Desired Settlement: I would like the club to honor the request and have the past due amount removed. To have the customer running back and forth to seek out a manager who doesn't return calls for over two months is not only inconvenient but unprofessional.

Review: I have tried now for 3 months to cancel my membership at Retro Fitness. I have called non stop, spoke with [redacted] and [redacted] who promised they left messages for [redacted] or [redacted], the managers to call me back. No one has called me back. I sent in an email to contact us section of website and no one gets back to me. they keep taking money out of my account each month, 19.99 and needs to be refunded for at least 2 months.... I was even promised by a manager months ago that they were to cancel my membership.Desired Settlement: Refund 3 months of money you took out. No one to reach, contact, etc.. Not very fair.

Sincerely,

Review: I cancelled my membership in December at the East Meadow Gym in person. I was told they needed 60 days notice I filled out a form. Recently while checking my bank account I realized they were still deducting $19.99 from my bank account. I notified the bank & theytook charge. I just received and email from Retro stating I was behind in my dues since my bank took the money back and they are charging me a late fee. For over a month I have been calling the gym to speak to the owners and emailed the gym. I seem to be only able to speak to an employee seems Owners are unreachable. I Have left my work number and home number. My Next step will be to an attorneyDesired Settlement: I want any extra monies refunded and I want a written apology from the owner and the daughters who seem to run the place and are never there.

[redacted]:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me and the matter has been resolved.

Sincerely,

Review: This is ridiculous. I haven't been to this gym in almost two years. I was told the contract would end after the first year without any action on my part, but Retro Fitness continued to charge me after the first year without me noticing. A few months ago, I noticed this because their collection agency ([redacted]) repeatedly called me to tender an unpaid balance (I had to replace my credit card, which inadvertently prevented them from charging me monthly). I called the collection agency, who couldn't cancel my membership - they said I had to call the gym itself. I called the gym a month ago and was told someone would call me back to help me cancel my membership. Nobody called me back. I called this morning to try again to cancel, and I was told I had to cancel in person - which is not what I was told a month ago and is something I can't do conveniently, since I've since moved!

I am behind by about $80 that I SHOULDN'T OWE and I'm afraid you're going to send me to a collection agency for this.

PLEASE, someone help me resolve this! My phone number is ###-###-####. I look forward to hearing from you.Desired Settlement: I just want my balance to be zero and to not have this sent to a collection agency.

Business

Response:

Please see attached:After speaking with the member all issues were resolved and all fees were waived to members satisfaction.

Review: I went into the gym on 03/**/14 to cancel my sons ( [redacted] ) gym membership in person. I spoke to the [redacted] and payed the $99.00 that my son owed and payed another $40.00 to cancel the membership. She tried to make me take the membership but I refused and she had me fill out some paperwork. I noticed several

months later that they were still taking money out of my checking account. I called the Retro Fitness ###-###-#### and was told I would have to speak to the [redacted] and have her take care of the problem. I went in person one time to the gym and she was not there and left a message at the front desk. She never returned my call. I then called 3x talking to a male 1x and the other female daytime [redacted] 2X and asked for assistance. I was told that [redacted] would have to handle the matter. I left my number all 3X and never received a return phone call from the gym. The gym has taken a total of $148.94 out of my checking account since April till September that I did

not authorize. I would like this to stop and my money returned.Desired Settlement: I would like them to refund my money and stop taking any future money out of my account. I cancelled this account in person.

Consumer

Response:

At this time, I have not been contacted by Retro Fitness regarding complaint ID [redacted].

Sincerely,

Review: As per the policy of this gym, I was required to go into the gym and fill out the appropriate cancellation paperwork. On 6/**/13, I signed the form which clearly states that my membership would be cancelled on 8/**/13 (60 days is their policy) and that no further payments would be due after the payment for the month of August 2013 was collected. However, in September 2013, they collected my dues from my credit card. I called Retro Fitness to which I was told [redacted] would handle and a refund would post in 5 days. No such refund has occurred and I actually had to advise my credit card not to allow any more debits from the club's billing company, ABC Financial, as I refuse to allow monthly deductions on a membership I accurately and timely cancelled. [redacted] at Retro does not respond to calls and ABC Financial claims they cannot take care of the cancellation since it must come from the club. I have sent a copy of my cancellation for to the club, to ABC Financial and now to the corporate office of Retro Fitness and still have no resolution. This is not an oversight - this is fraud. Continuing to collects dues after they were notified of the cancellation (and proof of such cancellation was submitted) is fradulent activity as they have no rights to make such demands or to seek any such sums. I want Retro to issue me a refund for any and all sums that were collected after the August 2013 payment. And they should be penalized in some manner for conducting themselves in such a manner. This is not a professionally run establishment and this type of business should not be tolerated. We shouldn't have to go through phone calls, emails, and complaints just to cancel a membership. Once I signed my form, that should have been the end of it.Desired Settlement: I did start a dispute with my credit card company regarding the $19.99 that was charged to my account for the month of September 2013. I want Retro and its billing company to confirm with my credit card company that such payment was erroneously collected and to work with them to have it credited back to my account. I want my account with ABC Financial to be shown as closed and I never want to be bothered for another payment from either company again.

Review: Dear Sir,

I joined Retro Fitness last year around October-November. I explained to the front desk lady (who helped me sign up) that I cannot sign for one year contract as I will be changing jobs from July [redacted] 2013. She said that was not a problem and as long as I provide written documentation of my address change, they will terminate my contract. Also, she said that I qualify for a free month which will show up on my statement. I asked for a summary of contract but they said I will receive it in the email.

I came back home and checked my email which had different statements.

1. I could not terminate my contract, it was final.

2. Nobody mentioned once a year $29.99 maintenance fee on signup.

3. No mention of free month in the email.

Therefore, I went back to manager ([redacted]) and he said that he will fix everything when I am about to leave.

I went to the front desk in the beginning of June 2013, and provided them a copy of the contract of my apartment lease. They said that my gym will be terminated within a month.

Till today (Sept. [redacted] 2013), I am being charged monthly. I tried calling multiple times and staff refuses to let me speak to "[redacted]; The manager". Once, I was able to get to him and he said it will be done but nothing happened. I feel I am being charged illegally and its unethical as I was never showed a copy of the contract on signup.

I will really appreciate if you could please look into this.Desired Settlement: I feel that I deserve a written apology from Retro Fitness and they should refund the extra charges from August onwards.

1. A written documentation of the terms discussed should be provided to the customer so that they can review what is in the contract.

2. The maintenance fee should be listed on the promotions.

3. Clear documentation of the policy termination

Review: I cancelled my membership with this gym on 1/*/13. When I went in they told me that the cancellation would not take effect for 60 days so I still had to pay two months of my membership. I did not agree with this but I just wanted to be done with this place. I paid that last 60 days and that was it. I checked my statement one day to see they took out for two months on top of the sixty days. When I called their billing company, ABC financial, they showed that I was still an active member and that the gym was still taking money from my account. I called the gym to only get the run around because apparently only one person handles the billing over there. I called a third time and someone told me this particular person, [redacted], left for the day without returning my calls. When I demanded to speak with someone, suddenly [redacted] reappeared. She gave me an attitude and told me I'd recieve a refund in thee to five buisness days. I called the billing company three weeks later to find that no refund was filed. The representative called the gym and was told by [redacted] that she does not remember the issue and that she would "look" for the paperwork and call her back. I cancelled in January and find it amazing I am still dealing with this place.Desired Settlement: I want the two months of membership ($19.99 per month) I am owed.

Sincerely,

Review: I was on orders for the month of August. I was billed continuously and charged extra by a billing service connected with retro fitness. I was told that since I am. In the military (U.S. Army), that I would be able to cancel at anytime with no additional cost. I have tried numerous times to cancel my membership. The staff continues to tell me that,I need to talk to the manager, yet he's never around. I am still being billed. I've asked for a contact information till the manager and I've gotten nothing. I have also tried to contact the corporate office with no help.Desired Settlement: I would like to end the contact.

Business

Response:

This is the firat I have heard from [redacted]. Our cancel policy is that if [redacted] has orders from the military to move away we are more than happy to cancel his contract. However, at this point we havent received anything from him. Retro Fitness prides itself on giving discounts on memberships to the Military, Police and Fire Fighters. I hope this helps and feel free to call me anytime.

Review: Approximately two days ago on 11/**/15, I was approached by an employee (Sydney ) of the facility and asked to leave the premises. Upon inquiry into the reasons why I was asked to leave, I was informed that no solicitation is allowed in the facility. I refused to leave the premises as I was not soliciting business or engaging in any illegal or unsavory actions. I returned to my routine workout assuming that the matter was addressed and resolved. However, yesterday (12/**/15), I was approached by two police officers who proceeded to escorts me out of the facility at the request of the above named employee (Sydney). As I was being escorted out of the facility the employee approached me and stated that he can ban me from the facility as it is a private business. I am requesting assistance resolving this matter as I have done nothing to deserve such discriminatory behavior.Desired Settlement: I will like to know whether or not this facility has grounds to ban me ( a gym member since 10/2015) from the facility, although I have not solicited any business as a personal trainer at this gym. I will also like to know what redress applies in cases such as this.

Since then on several ocassions I have spoken to several employees at Retro Fitness of [redacted] to cancel monthly charges made to my citibank checkings account. I even signed a cancelation of contract request upon expiration of the one year contract. Still six months later I am still incurring monthly charges from Retro Fitness to my citibank checkings account.Desired Settlement: Since the expiration of the one year contract in April 2013 I have made no use of the Retro Fitness facilities and request a full stop payment of unauthorized monthly charges and refund of such unauthorized charges.

Sincerely,

Review: I was referred to Retro Fitness by a friend for some workouts to do there.. when I arrived they told me to sign up on a computer yet I couldn't manage to do it on my own somehow. A guy came to help me and filled everything out, he just asked me to put in my cc details to pay. I went there for around 2 months yet stopped after.. They kept on charging my card unbeknownst to me.. when my cc changed they tried contacting me only after a while that I have accumulated bill yet when I called back I couldn't get through to anyone. finally after multiple tries I reached someone and they told me in order to cancel a membership I must actually go down to the place... when I took my time off work to go down and close it they said I can't being that I have a balance. and this membership is signed up for LIFE!!!! they told me there's no way to cancel my membership now as I have a bill that I am not even meant to pay as I did not agree to sign up for life neither a year, but this guy that signed me up didn't bother mentioning this.. They claim that even after 2 days had I wanted to cancel my membership I wouldn't have been able to as this guy signed me up for a minimum of a year..

Had this guy made me aware that there is this thing I would have not signed up or at least maybe made an effort to go to this gym...Desired Settlement: they should please stop billing me and remove the $208 bill from my account

Review: I signed up with the gym on 0ctober, ** 2014 for the 1 year contract. I paid the enrollment fee +[redacted] month+ annual maintenance fee. I fulfilled the contract and mailed the certified letter to my gym saying that I don't want to renew the contract for the next year. They got back to me saying they will cancel my membership but I need to pay for the next 2 months (which I agree to pay) and the last charge on my credit card will be on Dec [redacted]. However on Dec [redacted] I got charged the annual maintenance fee again. I disagree with this charge since I have already paid maintenance fee for the year I attended and asked no to renew my membership for the next year.Desired Settlement: Refund of $42.38

Business

Response:

The maintenance charge is an annual charge, the initial bill for [redacted] was Dec [redacted] 2014 this covered the year of 2014. the second charge was December [redacted] 2015 this covered the year of 2015. [redacted] had paid no maintenance for 2015 until this charge. the contract clearly stipulates that the charge is billed on the first of Dec for that particular year not what a member percieves as being a year of membership. Regardless [redacted] submitted her cancellation after her obligated payment period meaning that her contract had automatically renewed in accordance with the terms andconditions she agreed too upon joining. If she had wished to not go past the 12 months she should have submitted her 60 day notice well before her agreement was past the obligated period. There will be no refund as the billing in in accordance with the terms and condtions she agreed too. AS copy of the contract can be supplied if requested along with any and all notes relating to termination request. Notes AUTOMATIC RENEWAL PROGRAM (Monthly Dues Member): Provided that Member is not in default of this agreement and subject to the terms and conditions hereof, the membership will automatically renew for the rate indicated below. Renewal terms may be cancelled at any time provided a 60-day written notice is delivered to the club's address. It is also understood that the club will not increase the monthly rate above the specified amount below. MONTHLY DUES: $19.99 + tax PER MONTH FOR FUTURE AUTOMATIC RENEWAL. RetroFitness® of [redacted] ("RetroFitness") is a franchisee of RetroFitness® LLC. RetroFitness® LLC. does not own and/or operate this facility. Retro Fitness of [redacted] charges an annual maintenance fee of $39.00 plus tax. If your sign-up date is between June [redacted] and October [redacted] this fee will be collected on December [redacted] of each year. If your sign-up date is between November [redacted] and May [redacted] this fee will be collected on August [redacted] of each year.
