Review: Columbia House was billing me for an account that I didn't know I had and ended up getting turned into collections.

Columbia house was billing me for an account that I didn't know I had. When I was in college I bought some DVD's through Columbia House and I did not know it automatically signed me up for an account. I moved, since I didn't know I had an account, I obviously didn't know I was getting a monthly charge for the account. Who knows how much later a letter was sent to my old address (a family members current address) stating final notice for a balance on an account that will be turned in to collections. This was given to my mother and she paid the balance. I monitor my credit through credit karma and it did not ever show anything I had ever had be turned into collections, but when I was in the process of buying a house this last summer a $22.00 charge showed up on my credit report from [redacted]. After some time on the phone I found out it was from Columbia House. I have a copy of the final notice that I came across showing that a check was sent for the final balance of $74.82 on 1/12/09 which is less than 30 days from the date of the final notice. My old account number according to the final notice is [redacted].Desired Settlement: This $22.00 charge to my credit has already cost me several thousand by forcing me to bye my home FHA. If you are wondering how, I had to put down a premium for using an FHA loan, and I also have to pay mortgage insurance every month since this knocked my credit score too low for me to qualify for a 5% conventional loan. This is the only negative mark on my credit score. All I want is for Columbia house to contact [redacted] and have this taken off my credit report.

Review: A debt of $54 that was not mine was sent to collections and now shows up on my credit report.

Account with collection agency [redacted] LP [redacted]. Unpaid debt on my credit report from Direct Brands/Columbia House. Charges in the amount of $54 were in no way accrued by myself or anyone in my household. I have never done any type of business whatsoever, or received products from Direct Brands/Columbia House or any of their affiliates. I have also never received any type of correspondence from said business in the form of statements, bills or acknowledgement of membership. Furthermore, no payments have been made from my financial institute, nor is there proof of any other form of payment having been made on that account, including the initial introductory payment. They have no signature or purchase agreement, as well as no proof whatsoever of me requesting products or services from them.

They also seem to be playing a " smoke in mirrors" kind of game with their 2 debt collectors - [redacted] LP ([redacted]), and [redacted]. Direct Brands told me I needed to contact [redacted] to file a dispute. When I got in touch with [redacted] they told me that they no longer handle accounts for Direct Brands and that I needed to contact [redacted]. When I called [redacted] I spoke with a representative named [redacted] who said that I do in fact need to file a dispute with [redacted] and then proceeded to give me an address in which to send my letter of dispute. Then I come to find out 2 weeks later, when I get my letter "returned to sender", that the address given to me was incorrect. I double checked my notes from my conversation with [redacted] to ensure I didn't make a mistake while writing their address onto the envelope- which I did not. I [redacted] to compare addresses to see if I misheard [redacted] when he told me the address over the phone- the address they have listed online is completely different then the one I was given.

After a simple Internet search I was able to find many similar complaints from people who had their credit report pulled only to find these unknown collections listed. [redacted] from [redacted] informed me that all acquired late fees on my account had been taken off (as incentive for me to pay I suppose) as they had been across the board for all accounts they held from Direct Brands because of the numerous complaints they were receiving from people calling regarding this unexplained debt on their credit.

This combined with allegations of the fraudulent sale of debt in December of 2008, Class action lawsuit in August of 2011 alleging business practices of unauthorized credit card charges, inability to cancel, unwanted products being mailed to homes, and their poor Revdex.com rating leads me to believe that this company does these types of shady things quite often.Desired Settlement: The 3 credit reporting agencies contacted Immediately to have these debts removed from my credit report

Review: I was sent a DVD that I did not ask for or request. I was not given notice that I was being charged for this DVD that was mailed to me.

On 2-5-14 I contacted Columbia House about a DVD that was charged to my bank account in the amount of $28. Because of that charge my account went into the negative and a bill that is scheduled to come out of my account on a certain day was declined and I had to pay an overdraft fee. I spoke with a [redacted] and a [redacted] who works for Columbia House, all they did was keep me on hold and continue to apololgize. I haven't bought anything in over a year from them nor do I received emails about new movies because their prices a crazy. I can get the same DVDs at [redacted], [redacted], [redacted], or [redacted] for $10 cheaper. I previously asked them to cancel my account, that is why I assumed I stopped getting emails and letters. Out of the clear blue on 2-5-14 I get a email from my bank about the $28 charge. When I contacted Columbia House, they said they see on my account (that should have been canceled) I haven't purchased anything in over a year. I asked why my account was still open, they couldn't give me an answer. [redacted] and [redacted] said I will only get a refund when I send the Dvd back that I did not ask for. They said the DVd is processing and haven't left the warehouse so they can't stop the order. If it hasn't left the warehouse why can't they stop the DVd that I didn't ask for from leaving. I have had bad experiences with the post office (late mail, mail that doesn't show up at all, carriers giving my mail to someone else) so I will have to wait for the DVd to come and then send it back in order to get a credit to my account. What if I never receive the DVD, what happens then? I was told that after I send the DVD back, it will take 3-5 days to receive a credit. In the mean time I have to pay for an overdraft fee that wouldn't have happened if Columbia House wouldn't have sent me a DVD that I didn't ask for and from an account that should have been canceled.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund for the DVD and payment to cover the overdraft fee that would not have happened if Columbia House wouldn't have sent the DVD in the first place.

Review: Sometime in early May 2005 I received an email to join COLUMBIA HOUSE TO BUY DVD'S MUSIC ETC. but we never bought any products from

the vendor. We received several EMAILS advertising or promoting their products. At no time did we ever recieve any terms and conditions that

would require us to purchase 4 dvd as a requirement of doing business with these people. I just went on my account @ IDENTITY GUARD COSTCO

and found that my credit score had suffered a downgrade due to COLUMBIA HOUSE reporting that we owed $90.oo even though we DID NOT

PURCHASE ANYTHING. I CALLED COLUMBIA and spoke with a supervisor who informed me that she could not help us in reversing the ridiculus

rules of penalizing the customer if he does not purchase product. I did not receive any collection notices nor were any attemps made to make me

aware of their intentions to penalize us for not buying their products. They simply are trying to damage my good reputation.Desired Settlement: THAT THEY CALL THEIR CREDIT BUREAU AND ADVISE THEM THAT WE DID NOT PURCHASE ANY PRODUCTS AND THEIR COLLECTION OF

$90.00 IS UNWARRANTED AND UNFAIR AND THAT NO EFFORTS WERE MADE ON THEIR PART TO PROPERLY EXPLAIN THEIR INTENTIONS

OR PRESENTING US WITH A BILL. NO COMMUNICATIONS WITH RESPECT TO THIS MATTER

Review: On my credit report I owe Columbia house dvd club and [redacted] it the debt collector. No one has my bill info

I pulled my credit report and it states that I owe Columbia house dvd club $64. The credit company handling the charges is [redacted] agency. The bill is from Sept 2012. I called [redacted] so I could have it removed from my report and they said they do not handle Columbia house accounts. I called Columbia house and they do not show I owe anything, so I asked for credit companies they deal with and I received three numbers. The first one did not have my account, the second number was disconnected and the third one keeps saying to call back later. This is in my old name and address and the bill was occurred When I had been married a full year. Someone else must of used my name at my old address to get dvds or this is a complete scam. How do I remove a bill I do not owe from my credit report?Desired Settlement: I would like this bill to be removed from my credit report since I never made the bill. If I am mistaken I would like to know who I can contact to pay the bill.

Review: A collection entry was made on January 2013 on my [redacted] credit bureau account listing a collection item. I filed a dispute on line on January 22, 2013. On March 7, 2013 I received a collection call in regard to this listing. The representative said that the problem is that a contract was not cancelled. We had cancelled the contract because we were receiving music CDs we did not order. All the CDs were returned with a signature required upon receipt. That was 8 years ago. My husband has died and I have moved and I do not need this kind of problem with my credit history.Desired Settlement: Perhaps the Revdex.com could alert the Credit Bureaus of this kind of business practice and I found multiple complaints against this company on the internet. We had cancelled the contract.

Review: Columbia House failed to cancel/close account as I requested and then proceeded to bill for ite** not requested/received.

Account # [redacted]

I e-mailed customer service in late August, early September 2013 to fully terminate my account.

Customer Service responded on 9 September with acknowledgement and stated that they had cancelled my DVD Automatic Shipment Membership and that I no longer needed to respond to any solicitations made by them.

On 23 September I e-mailed customer service to inform them that I had received another solicitation from them on 19 September. I again requested full termination of my account and that I will not be held liable or accountable to pay for any ite**.

On 30 Novebmer I received a bill from Columbia House that stated the amount was past due from October. I e-mailed Columbia House of this for I had not received anything and my account was terminated in September.

On 3 December customer service responded stating that they had a tracking number to show that the package was received. They stated that I could return the item and then receive credit.

On 4 December, I e-mailed again to reiterate the sequence of events to include their statements that ite** would not be automatically shipped and my statements that I will not be held accountable or liable for any shipments. I have not received anything from Columbia House since my account termination was requested in late August/early September.

As of today, 2 January 2014, Columbia House continues to show a balance owed to them.Desired Settlement: The balance removed in FULL under my name with no association to owing anything to Columbia House or any of its affiliates.

Review: I recently pulled a copy of my credit report and seen this company. I reported that I have no history nor information with company.

After pulling my credit report and seeing this false collection I attempted several times to contact this company to solve this 53 dollar mistakes on their behalf. After multiple failed attempts I'm reaching out to the Revdex.com to help resolve this issue before I progress to representatives to handle this error. I have never received any DVD's or "ANY" other merchandise from this company let alone signed any contract or agreement to pay these funds they claim I owe. The [redacted] credit agency claims the account number to this debt is [redacted] and was closed in June of 2009. For the record in January 2009 I was enlisted into the U.S. Army basic training program and after completing my training I was immediately put on orders to complete A.I.T. and completed in November 2009.This false negative debt has not only kept me from several needed loans but has also prevented me from certain career opportunities. I believe this company is not only scamming people to make them believe they owe small debts but a disgrace to society for collecting debts not even owed to them from people incapable to fight this scam then rather taking a easy way out and paying.Desired Settlement: I would like this collection DELETED immediatly from all credit report agencies.

Review: I contacted Columbia House to cancel membership. They said it was canceled but still send me DVD sets I DID NOT order and do not want, they cost $50.

I contacted Columbia House a few months ago to cancel my membership. It took nearly a month for them to answer my e-mail. I went to [redacted] and contacted them there to cancel my membership. They said they would do it (on FB and in e-mail). About 2 months later I got a DVD set (a full season of NCIS, $50) that I did not order. I called to complain and they told me that my account was still active so I asked again that they cancel it. I paid for the set out of fear that they would claim they didn't get it back. A about 2 months went by and today I got another DVD set that I did not order (season 1 of Elementary, $50). I still fear they will come after me for money that I don't owe so I guess I'm stuck paying for this too. I demand that they end my membership and stop sending me DVD sets that I never asked for. August 5, 2014Dear [redacted]:I am responding to the inquiry your office forwarded for [redacted].Our records indicate that a COLUMBIA HOUSE DVD CLUB account was opened in [redacted]’s name on December 28, 2007. We shipped an enrollment order to the address on the account ([redacted]) and charged $5.00 to the account for that shipment. We also added 2 late fees, at $3.00 each, to the account in accordance with our delinquent payment policies, when the balance remained unpaid. The purchase commitment associated with this membership was to buy 5 DVDs at regular Club price within 1 year of enrollment. When the purchase commitment was not fulfilled within the specified time period, we added a charge of $109.70 to the Club account. This amount represents the cost of the 5 DVDs remaining in the purchase commitment, plus shipping and processing charges and tax.Since the balance of $120.70 remained unpaid, we placed the debt in collections with Receivables Performance Management (RPM).We have contacted RPM and instructed that they close their file, cease collection efforts and remove any adverse information from [redacted]’s credit report. RPM has confirmed that the account is closed and that they have taken steps to remove information regarding this account from [redacted]’s credit report. We have also closed this account in our records with a zero balance. We trust this resolves [redacted]’s concerns. You may contact me at ###-###-#### with any questions.
