Instant Checkmate.com compiles reports from millions of public records including information provided by state and local governments. All of the information contained in our reports is part of what is referred to as the "public record."
We do apologize for any confusion Mr. [redacted] may have experienced regarding our services. Some customers are under the impression that when you purchase a membership with our company you are paying for records; unfortunately, this is not the case. The service that is provided is actually the compiling of all the public records data and the sorting of the data into an easy to read format. When a customer pays for a public records search, we do guarantee that we will search every database available to us, however, we cannot guarantee which records will or will not show up in the final report since we are not in control of the records themselves. We simply display records as they are provided to us.
In addition, premium databases are also more expensive for us to access, so in an effort to keep our monthly membership costs down, we must charge a small, one-time access fee to compile premium reports for our customers.

Beware!!! It sounds like you're signing up for just a one time charge, and what you are actually signing up for is a recurring monthly charge of $22.86 PER MONTH. I used the service one time and it's shown up on my bill for 6 months now. Just like everyone else, shame on me for not paying closer attention to my credit card bill. BUT THIS IS HOW THEY MAKE A LOT OF THEIR MONEY!! Their customer service reps get this complaint so often that you can tell that they read from a script. They addressed me in a very robotic tone as soon as I explained the problem (both times I called). Furthermore, the background information I received from my one time usage WAS NOT EVEN WORTH IT -- I could have found the same information with an internet search.

WHAT A SCAM! After agreeing to the fee, you get BASIC information that is available anywhere on the web. In order to get the "real" information, you are required to pay MORE fees. The info on the PREMIUM files is incorrect or not relevant. I am sick that I spent the money to get no more information than I was able to find out on my own... and I still don't have the correct information.

Instant Checkmate is totally misleading. Once you join and submit approximately
$22 and want to see report the information is just surface stuff but if you want premium information you have to pay $20 more. And if you want the pdf format you have to pay $2 more. Did I forget to mention every time you open the premium you pay $20 more?? This is a total racket and I just paid $22 for nothing no information I did not know. Why would USA Today have it on their website? IF everyone pays $22 they can make some money and I am suspicious that some people fall for the premium tab and get hooked big time.

In order to complete the Premium Upgrade process, Mr. [redacted] had to agree to the $19.99 charge by clicking the button on the bottom of the page which says, “Continue, yes I want the premium report.”
The text directly to the right of this “Continue” button clearly and conspicuously reads:
A one-time charge of $19.99 will be applied to the credit card on file. You will have access to the available premium data on the PERSON searched as soon as you click the “Continue” button. You will be able to view this data as long as you are an active member.
In addition, in order to complete the enrollment process, Mr. [redacted] had to check a box to agree to Instant Checkmate’s Terms and Conditions. Instant Checkmate’s Terms of Use, like the Billing Details and Frequently Asked Questions also prominently displayed on the website, fully and conspicuously explain Instant Checkmate’s billing terms.
Specifically, the Terms of Use describe:

a) Instant Checkmate DOES NOT GUARANTEE THE ACCURACY OF INFORMATION FOUND ON THE SITE OR THROUGH THE SERVICES. c) Instant Checkmate DOES NOT WARRANT OR MAKE ANY REPRESENTATIONS REGARDING THE MATERIALS ON THIS SITE OR SERVICES IN TERMS OF THEIR TIMELINESS, CORRECTNESS, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY, OR OTHERWISE. WHILE Instant Checkmate MAKES REASONABLE EFFORTS TO PROVIDE ACCURATE AND TIMELY INFORMATION ON THE SITE, YOU SHOULD NOT ASSUME THAT THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IS ALWAYS UP TO DATE OR THAT THE SITE CONTAINS ALL THE RELEVANT INFORMATION AVAILABLE ABOUT Instant Checkmate. Despite the previously mentioned stipulations, we understand that Mr. [redacted] was not satisfied. We have received authorization to grant a full refund of $42.85. Please allow 3 to 5 business days for the refund to post back to the customer’s account. Effective immediately, Mr. [redacted]’s account has been cancelled and the customer will incur no further charges.
Instant Checkmate apologizes for any confusion Mr. [redacted] encountered regarding our policies. Since the concerns mentioned in the original complaint have been addressed, we therefore consider this matter closed.
