Michael & Son Services Inc

When I overestimated my plumbing skills and got in over my head on Labor Day weekend, Michael & Sons scheduled an appointment right away. Shaw T[redacted] came out right away and solved our plumbing problem quickly and efficiently. He not only did the needed repair (replacing an outdoor spigot), but corrected years of jury-rigged repairs and put in a much-needed shutoff valve under the sink (we had to shut off water to the whole house before this). We have not had much luck with plumbers over the years, and our early 1960-era plumbing is a nightmare to work on. But Shaw worked out the solution and got it all fixed promptly. We would not hesitate to use Michael and Sons (and Shaw!) again for any plumbing need. Great service!!

Matt P[redacted] of Michael and Sons Services in Chesapeake did a truly outstanding job in managing a mold problem in my home air conditioning and furnace systems. His every action was professional and he was extremely responsive when asked for additional information to support my insurance claim. In addition he was totally knowledgeable of the issue and the technology involved and able to explain it clearly and comprehensively.

Michael & Son is, by far, the best plumbing and HVAC company I have ever dealt with. They were on time, professional, thorough and patient with my plumbing issues. They also recommended alternatives at varying prices for me to consider. As a first time user of Michael & Son, I highly recommend their company. I have used several other companies in the past, both large and small, but Michael & Son is Number 1 in my opinion.

I was very pleased with the service provide by the Ron the Generator Technician. He was extremely knowledgeable about the work he was performing. He took the time to explain what my problems were and how he was going to fix it. He explained to me how to look for trouble indicators and faults on my generator system and where the connection was located in my home. In the event I need any future service I will seek out Michael & Son first.

Do not ever consider using Michael and Sons for any HVAC work! We had a contract with them. To get ready for winter they came out to "check" the HVAC at our home. Everything looked fine, but they suggested that we install a "hard start" switch to lessen the load on the two heat pumps we have. Okay...cha-ching about 350.00 to do this.
Fast forward to spring, 2016 and they come out for a summer check. The guy comes out and comes back to show me pictures of rusted tubes and said that there were multiple leaks. He even had pictures of the rusted tubes. Who knows if they were really mine? It seemed to pat. I asked if it could be repaired and he said...NO....it is too extensive. The only fix is to totally replace the upstairs unit. This meant the outside compressor and the attic handler. He did offer three prices ranging from about 9-12k. I told him just fill up the unit with freon and see what will happen. He warned that soon we would be calling them back because what he put in would leak out.
Almost on cue, the upstairs unit blew hot air on one of the first hot days we had. I decided to get a second opinion before spending 9-12k to replace the unit. I found a guy who had stellar reviews and he came out. I did not preface the visit with what had been done. I simply said.."the upstairs unit is blowing hot air." He took it from there. He came back in a few minutes after checking the attic unit and the outside compressor. He said that a valve in the outside compressor was leaking. He added something in the system to show where the leak was. I am not an HVAC expert, but I can see what was leaking. I asked him the same question I asked the Michael and Sons tech..."can it be repaired?" His answer was a resounding YES...of course! He needed to order the valve. It came in a few days, he popped it in and three months later, even with the temp outside right now a toasty 98, it is still cooling just fine. His total charge? Just under 1k! Not the 9-12k cost to replace the unit! I was very happy with his work and very disgusted with Michael and Sons.
And here is a little sidelight! When they opened up the outside unit that had the leaky valve, he asked me why I added the "hard start" switch? I told him that Michael and Sons suggested it in the winter. Odd he said, since the original unit already had one!! And the wired one Michael and Sons put in was just dangling there, not even sure it was working...but the bottom line? We did not not need it. That was $350 wasted. My take on this is that Michael and Sons are only interested in racking up new repairs. The cover of a "contract" is just that, a cover. They found something wrong both times they came out to "check" the system.
My advise? Look elsewhere, Michael and Sons is not a good HVAC service unless you want to waste money!!! Stay away....run to someone else!!

Robert found the problem and explained every thing that needed to be done to solve the problem. He was friendly, courteous and gave me advice on maintenance and replacement options.

The technician was thorough and clearly competent.
