Hello my name is [redacted] I filed a complaint on Friday August 14, 2015

Review: This site did not give detailed information! If you're looking for the obvious like addresses and family members that's all that it gives! I paid 20+$'s for that?! UHM! NO! I was looking for detailed information like criminal and it gave NOTHING! When I knew there should have been something! And it's not there! I was scammed out of money! And lied to! PeopleFinders is a leading Data-as-a-Service ("DaaS") provider for consumers and businesses seeking detailed insights on people, places and things in the United States. As one of the largest owners of public records data in the U.S., (Above) is what I was looking for! Detailed information! And I got nothing!!! I E-mailed the company and told them the issue and asked for a refund ASAP! I feel that this is a scam! Will never use again or recommend anyone!Desired Settlement: I would like my money back! Since the website did not fulfill what it said it would!

The customer was refunded $19.95 on 03/22/16 already. Please close this complaint since this as already been resolved.

What a scam! I signed on to get a background report. Paid $19.95 thinking I had a 7-day free trial and would not be charged if I cancelled in 7 days. I looked at my credit card charges 5 days later and there was the $19.95 charge plus a charge for $29.95 4 days later. The "report" they provided the first day was totally worthless information. When I called within 5 days to cancel they said it was only a 3-day trial period; that the $19.95 was for the first report I received and since I didn't cancel within 3 days they charged the$29.95 for a membership, however, they were not able to locate my email account in their records and refused to refund anything. Also, when I went back into the website to re-try using it to get any kind of legitimate report I got a pop-up message saying, "Oops! It looks like you don't have an account!" Really? The girl I spoke to was very rude and when she said they probably could refund anything I said I would go through my credit card company, which I did. My credit card company reversed all the charges and disputed the the claim and also blocked them from any future charges to my card.

This business is a rip off! They have a confusing web site that charges your CC with an accidental charge due to the wording of services. They refuse to refund the charges even though I called Customer Service immediately after the charge! Do not do business with this company!

Review: peoplefinders.com offers a way to opt out people, which my wife and I have used; but the property record search still displays our names associated with our address.Desired Settlement: We'd like them to remove our names from their online property record as well. We understand these records are public and so on; so please do not try to inform us about that.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

Review: I have been scammed by Peoplesfinder.com

I spoke with three different agents and supervisors at Peoplesfinder.com seeking a refund and they refused.

On April 13, I went on line to search for the telephone number of a family friend whose wife had recently died. The site offered me a 95cent purchase or a 1.95 purchase for a phone number. I chose the 95 cent purchase and provided my credit card information. I have not used this site since April 13, 2013.

I am 65 years old, unemployed, dealing with cancer, and do not need to be scammed by an unscrupulous company in Sacremento.

I learned to day that Peoplesfinder automatically charged my account "membership dues" of $24.95 on each of Apr 17, May 18, and Jun 18.

I called and went through two agents up to a supervisor who all said they would refund only the last month billed even though I had never used the service, did not know I had signed up for the service, and had no intent to obtain such service. My intent was to obtain one phone number for a deceased friend for 95 cents, not for $75 plus. They were rude and blamed me for signing up for this service... They stated I should have known the discounted 95cent fee included a monthly membership with automatic billing. The supervisor I spoke with was [redacted] (id number XXXXXX)

I have disputed this charge with my credit card company.

I seek your assistance in obtaining my never used and never aware "membership" fees and to register a complaint against this company.

Business' Initial Response

The customer has a choice to accept a special discounted price available with a monthly membership or the full price for the search without membership. If a customer does not wish to enroll in membership they may choose the full price for one report. The membership provides a three day trial to try our services. Our membership service provides unlimited searches and other features for a monthly fee. This is clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the initial order selection page. Then the consumer is provided with an entire page outlining the terms of the membership which clearly and conspicuously states that after the initial trial, unless the consumer cancels the service the service will continue monthly and the card they provided will be charged until they tell us to cancel their membership to avoid future charges. The membership is mentioned no less than three times on three pages before the order is complete.

Given that members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to avoid future charges. For the period of her membership the customer will be charged each month. During that time, our customer service is available to take the cancellation at any time.

Consumer's Final Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

Peoples finder website is deceptive. No reasonable person would "subscribe" to a $24.95 monthly "membership" to seek out one phone number. I obtained one phone number and ended up with three monthly bills of $24.95. Peoplefinder.com refused to refund this amount even though I never used the service except for the one obtained phone number which I thought was a fee of 95cents. I went through three layers of customer service which was unfriendly and rude refusing to refund the three months of membership I did not use and was unaware I had "purchased" on their site. I suggest all avoid this company and if they are similarly scammed, file complaints with credit card company and Revdex.com of Sacramento CA.

Business' Final Response

When shopping online it is the consumer's responsibility to read and understand what is being purchased. Per the terms that you agreed to online on 4/13/2013 there will be no further refunds.

Review: People finders is a false company that doesn't help you in anyway. Doesn't give you any information to what your looking for but the one you put into it. Another word your provide a phone number it gives you just a number back and false or old name and same with the address. Then they said "Free Trial" its really to get you sign up for a account with no! access like they say because then you have to pay additional $39.95 per search. Then I ask for my money back and they say NO!All I ask was $39.95 back from their thousands of scam they do a day. what a scam!!!Desired Settlement: want my money back !!

Consumer's Final Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

They say they can't find my information because its pretty clear they Don't want to resolve this matter. They created my account and deleted it the same day, they should be able to pull up their records and find it. If they don't that also shows poor management on their end of doing business. I also looked at the reviews which I should had done first and I'm just like the other hundreds of un satisfied customers so they sure aren't doing something right "people finders " they can't even find my account in their own system!!

I am rejecting this response because: I have to reply to this proposed resolution in order to avoid having the complaint closed out but the business needs 2-5 business days to resolve the issue. Review: Ordered a search on a particular person on Sept. 10, 2014. Immediately followed website instructions to cancel the automatic membership. Contacted Peoplefinders, they say they have no record of cancellation. Did not receive any emails from them upon ordering or upon cancellation - all search results were displayed online and not emailed to me. They have fraudulently charged my credit card 3 times for $29.95 since then, in addition to the $19.95 that I agreed to for the report that I ordered. I canceled the membership immediately because when I tried to get a report on another individual, it did not work at all (supposedly the trial membership gave unlimited background reports for 3 days, and the auto membership would start unless canceled, which I did).Desired Settlement: I would like a refund of the amount stolen and charged to my card = 3*$29.95 = $89.85

We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial had ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee ($29.95) on the fourth day, and for every month thereafter. Our records show your membership was cancelled over the phone on 11/24/2014, three months after the membership was initiated. Additionally, you advised the representative that you had already contacted your bank or Credit Card Company and filed a dispute. Often, due to the dispute, you are given a conditional refund by your bank; therefore we cannot offer you a refund. Please allow time for your financial institution to review the charges for validity. Usually this process will take a few billing cycles and they will notify you of the outcome via mail. You will now need to follow their policies and procedures regarding these charges.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because:I followed the website instructions to immediately cancel my membership on the day that I first purchased it. I did not receive any email verification from you. The fact that you have no record of my canceling of the membership is either your error, or an error in your online system, as I exactly followed the instructions for cancellation.

Review: Used the site to locate old friends. Advertizement was $19.95 for three days of access. I canceled after two days. Two days after that they charged my card another $2.95 without my permission or knowelege. When I spoke to a customer Service rep. I was given a run around that it was clearly advertized that I would be charged $2.95 for canceling. I find it hard to believe they can charge for canceling or even charge my card for it without notice.Desired Settlement: I would like my $2.95 refunded

Business

Response:

As stated on the website, a cancellation fee of $2.95 was applied to your account for the trial you selected. The three day trial trial was canceled within the trial period. Therefore, on the fourth day you were billed only $2.95. If we had not received a cancellation you would have been billed $24.95/month. Feel free to review the $19.95 Background Report + Trial product you selected on PeopleFinders.com. This charge is non-refundable per the Terms you agreed to.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: Your site and it's mouse overs are misleading. My understanding of it was 19.95 for three days access. NOT one report. Also it no where said when I paid the 19.95 that I would be billed another 2.95 for cancelling at the end of the three days. I accessed your site with another e-mail and it was just as misleading, Altho when I accessed it from the original e-mail it showed the 2.95. Like I said it's very misleading. It says nothing about the cancellation fee until after you've paid the 19.95, I don't expect money to be refunded but will never use your site again and will do all I can to keep others I know from using it also..

Review: I called to speak to someone about multiple charges to my debit card. Upon inquiring about said charges, I was then treated to a lot of huffing, puffing, yelling and screaming. I was led to believe that I did not have any right to inquire about these charges. The first woman I spoke to refused to allow me to speak to her manager and hung up on me without any good reason. I was not rude to her in any way I was simply concerned about the privacy of my account. I then called again and received a new employee. She was telling me that I'm not the only one who had these issues and its my responsibility to take care of it on my own. What sense does that make? Not only do companies like this put your information online without your consent AND charge a fee for it, they are also not willing to accept responsibility for any financial errors on their part. So, after then asking her to speak to her boss, I was told that she didn't have a boss. She called me all sorts or horrible names and also proceeded to hang up on me again. When I tried to call back, they blocked my telephone number. The two women who work for this company are unnecessarily rude, bossy, and condescending.Desired Settlement: I want a refund of the amount charged for the information that I requested as well as a written apology.

Business

Response:

We take these matters very seriously and have reviewed the two calls on file from you to our Customer Care Department on 12/29/2014. We will take appropriate action. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by your experience over the phone. During the first call we found that the representative advised, per your request, that the first two attempts to charge $0.98 to your card failed due to a zip code mismatch and that your third attempt, a $1.95 charge, did successfully go through. During your second call to our Customer Care Department, the representative advised per your request that there was "no manager available right now" and that they would "be in at 9:30am." She also offered you a voicemail so that the supervisor could call you directly at a later time. We have confirmed that your call was in fact transferred to the supervisor voicemail at the end of this call and not disconnected by this representative. You also requested to have your Public Record information removed from our search results. The representative confirmed we do offer the option to remove your information through a self-service online tool. She continued that we do not accept opt out requests over the phone. We found no instance during these two calls of a representatives "yelling and screaming" or using "horrible names." In contrast, we find that in your frustration with having to go online to manage your own Public Profile on PeopleFinders.com you had used several insults and vulgar language when dealing with the second representative. All of the information on our website is from public record databases. Every person aged 18 and older can have a public record. This information is collected on a County, City, State and federal level and can also come from reporting information during normal every day activities such as grocery store club cards, magazine subscriptions, voter registration, warranty cards, even fishing licenses, and forms you fill out when browsing the internet. There are thousands of ways this information gets reported. We are not required to remove any information from our website; however, we offer the option to as a courtesy. We are not refusing to remove your information. We will remove this information from being searched on our site once we receive your request. For your convenience, below is a direct link to the opt out page.http://www.peoplefinders.com/manage/default.aspx In conclusion your account was closed per your online request on 12/27/2014, the charge of $1.95 is non-refundable per the Terms you agreed to and you are welcome to request a removal of your Public Profile on PeopleFinders.com by using the online form provided.

Response:

I am rejecting this response because:I have a right to courtesy and respect from any person and at any time. I also have a right to inquire about charges, data collected about myself, as well as privacy and no corporation or otherwise has permission to infringe upon that. America still has laws that corporations must abide by. Nor should I be forced to "self serve" removing my information from a site regardless of how the information was collected.I am not the only person who has had bad experiences with peoplefinders.com. I also was not transferred to any voicemail as the agent blocked my number therefore preventing the call from continuing. Of course I would expect people finders to lie. Moreover, that lack of professionalism and service in itself is proof of the poor reputation that this company has.Peoplefinders is NOT a public utility and therefore is also required to maintain proper policies about privacy. Many lawsuits have been filed against companies such as this due to the misuse of people's names and addresses as well as credit card information. Liabilities do lie with businesses who dispense information for profit as you do not know what the motive or intentions are for the consumer of said information. There is never an excuse for a representative to be rude or bossy when dealing with a customers concerns.

Review: I was searching for a cousin's address just before Christmas and was not finding it.A pop up called "peoplefinders" came up offering to find the address I was looking for. The charge was $0.97, so I agreed.Next thing I know they are charging me $24.95 per month with no authorization saying I agreed to the membership when I paid for the $0.97.I called to have the charges reversed and the refused saying I already paid for this month's subscription and that they will no refund my money but will cancel the autorenew.Worst part is that I did not notice the charge last month so they have stolen $50 from me.Desired Settlement: If I did not notice the charge for previous months, that is my fault. When I noticed the charge this month, I want the refund of $24.95

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I did not receive any notice that told me that I would be automatically enrolled in a "automatic payment" using my card information at $24.95 per month. If I did, this information was put in small print in a huge "agreement" that no one would take the time to read. Why would ANYONE agree to pay $24.95 for looking up an address of a family member that lives out of state? The fact that their voice recording steers you to an automated response to cancel memberships is a dead give away that they are preying on people who accept the "discounted" rate for an address look up but then intent to gouge them with automatic "membership renewals" at $24.95 per month. If this was a ligitimate business practice, they would just bill you $5 (for example) for the address look up and not require you to enroll in a "automatic renewal subscription". They clearly make their money providing an address and then hope to prey on unsuspecting victims that allow the 3 day grace period to expire and then they slam them with a "nonrefundable" $25 charge.

the customer selected a Backgrond Report Membership as the very first product they purchased. The website states that they will be billed the monthly fee for unlimited Background Report Searches. They then agreed to the Terms of Use which state the service is not refundable. We have refunded the most currently months billing of $19.95. There will be no further billings.

I used 7 days trial last year, and canceled it within 7 days.

However, I found I was automatically charged for three months in August. I contacted with them and they told me to contact with my bank to dispuse the charges. At the same time they would cancel my " membership".

today ( 9/18), I found I was charged for $24.99 again. I called them and was told my " membership" was cancelled on 8/14. when I asked why I was charged again, the representative hang up the phone. I called back and asked same question, the second representative became silent. I waited for one minute , thought she was checking on something, but no one replied from the other side of the phone . I had to ask my bank for help.

this company is not doing honest work.

What a rip-off! After trying to get me to sign up for more expensive upgrades multiple times, it gave me inaccurate information! Luckily, I only lost $3.95 and my time. Don't waste your time and money on these losers.

FRAUDS & SCAMMERS!

I got the same results as checking regular internet & they Internet was free! People finders were rude & robotic just stating their LOOP HOLES why they won't credit the almost $25 charged for a service NOT rendered! People Verified on the other hand, were great! Customer service was professionally provided! Try them! But the frauds of People "finders" are people scammers! That's who they really are!

I was looking for information and selected a one time search. There was very little correct information and when I called customer service I was spoke to in a dismissive manner. I was told that my name was matched phoneticky and the info must be for another person. I do not have a common name nor should I pay for a "phonetic match ". Poor site, poor customer service and they basically steal your money with false claims!
