Synchrony Bank (Formerly GE Capital Retail Bank) Reviews (993)

I am not going to spend any more time than is necessary on Synchrony Bank and their affiliates, so I won't be typing a lengthy review. All I have to say is this is the most heinously run credit card company I've ever dealt with. Way ahead in my payments and I start getting charged all kinds of fees after ONE late payment of a couple of days. I am paying this off immediately and I will NEV ER do business with these schmucks again. Maybe Synchrony should get into another business, because from what I can see they are clearly not competent in the credit card business.

The worst customer service experience I have ever received. To illustrate this I will say one thing, this is the only online complaint I have ever submitted in almost 40 years of consumerism. Do yourself a favor and choose another issuer like I am.

I requested a wire transfer first thing in the morning, I confirmed a few hours later it would be sent that day. Ithe money was not taken from my account so I called tot confirm the wire was sent. It was not sent and they could not give me a reason why it was not sent. They said they would wire it 4 days later. It's easy to make a deposit but much harder to get your money out.

These guys are is. I received a letter that the name was changing. And the first thing they did was run a credit check on me and lower my spending limit. A prime example example of corporate America. I will be paying them off this month and closing the account.

This is not really a bank. I have worked for and with a diverse variety of banks throughout my 30+ year career and I'm quite sure Synchrony (formerly GE Credit) is not a bank. They are a finance company and not a particularly bight one at that. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Citibank recently sold their BP card book of business to Synchrony. I am - was - a customer for that card. My account is in excellent standing and, as we travel a good bit, we use - used - that card a good bit. We recently received our new Synchrony card and nothing appeared different ... until yesterday. We went to make a purchase using that card (for the points) and it was declined. We didn't think much about it and used a MasterCard instead. Then, today, I went to my local BO station for fuel and the card was declined again. Not being able to think of any reason why it should be declined, I called Synchrony and was told it was because I was not in my home state. They wanted to know if I was traveling and, in this instance, I was not. So happens I live in North Carolina but the closest town from me is in Georgia. I have always bought most of my gas in Georgia. So, having explained that to Synchrony, I was told I would have to call them each and every time I intended to use the card outside of North Carolina. That is just about every day. I related to them that this was probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard come from a bank and I have heard some pretty stupid statements emanating from banks. I told them that calling them everyday wasn't going to happen and I had to believe there are a large number of people - customers of Synchrony - who probably feel the same way. The reaffirmed their policy to which I informed them I would be closing our account. I know I don't need their card as any number of other cards provide the same or similar features. They obviously don't need my business and, so, now they don't have it.

Poor customer service. They will not talk to me unless I provide the passcode left on my voice mail. The voice mail was unitelligible and I could make out only about 3 words. I could not make out the passcode due to a mumbling rep with a heavy accent. I requested they resend the message to my home phone and they will not.
I am denied total access relating to my account.
I went to another bank and got another credit card. I'm afraid what would happen if I actually had money on deposit with them.

Since the switch to Synchrony by my Banana Republic credit card, my card has been cancelled three separate times for "fraud." These were not actual instances of fraud, but purchases I tried to make. Instead of contacting me like my primary bank does, they instead just cancelled my card so that I couldn't use it to make purchases. No notifications, just a complete stop on my credit when I had thousands of dollars in credit available. In the past month, they reported my card lost or stolen without my consent and shipped me a new card without telling me. This card never arrived. I didn't need this card because there had been no fraud on my account, but they decided to create a security situation all on their own. Now my account has been entirely closed and I have been without a credit card for over a month. I contacted the business today because I wanted to make Christmas purchases during the Black Friday sale to find out that there was nothing they could or would do. They didn't so much as apologize. I'm truly upset.

They spent 2 YEARS trying to sell me their credit card via Amazon.

After I agreed - they made hard inquiry, got all information (excellent rating), and then rejected application because of "we are unable to confirm your identity with enough confidence".

They are insane. Tried to communicate to manager which was absolutely unprofessional.

IMHO God saved me from the great troubles with !@#$% by this rejection.

I have vowed never to do business with Synchrony Bank. I had two interest free loans for Ashley Furniture and Rooms to Go for a year. When I sent my last payment to both accounts at the end of September, Synchrony Bank managed to put both payments into one account instead of two, so I still got billed form Rooms to Go. I even faxed the cancelled check to Synchrony, and over a month later the problem was not corrected. Instead of transferring the payment into the correct account, they sent me a check for the amount I wrote, and when I called today, they still want to charge me more than the balance I owed, for THEIR MISTAKE!

I have read through several reviews and am finding I am not the only one with these issues EVER SINCE they've switched to Synchrony Bank. I am quite sad that GE Money has done whatever it is they've done to hand themselves over like this but they've caused major problems here in the credit world for my fiance and I. I would say we have at least 6 or 7 cards/accounts that were GE Money and are now Synchrony and since the switch, limits have been decreased steadily as balances are paid down and even accounts with perfect payment history have been completely paid off and then closed automatically because Synchrony Bank didn't feel my current credit score was worthy enough to have the account any longer despite the account having just been opened while GE 6 months earlier....NOTHING HAD CHANGED with my credit you pks! Our Walmart card-decreased...Amazon-decreased....AE-decreased...Sam's Club-CLOSED AUTOMATICALLY!!! The situation is terrible and as soon as all these accounts are paid off, no matter how long that takes, they will all be closed whether they do it or we do....though I hope we get the chance to do it in their faces and I hope others do the same because long time customers should not be treated this way. Conclusion-SYNCHRONY BANK SUCKS!

I had no idea who was calling eight times a day. Thought it was a scam. Finally they left a vague message about an account I never heard of and to which I responded. To cut to the chase,,I purchased hearing aids through EPIC and was offered 12 month financing interest- free through what I now know was SYNCHRONY. I made my first payment in June, twice the minimum. Second payment in July, the same. The call was to inform me I owed both July payment (which I had made) and August, for which I had received the bill four days ago. I refused to authorize any payment online until I had checked my checking account records, which seemed to surprise them. I did check and my July payment had cleared on July 14. Today is Sunday, so I will have to wait until tomorrow to notify them and hope this is the end of it.

This is an extension of my previous complaint. I have discovered that I WAS LIED TO WHEN I AGREED TO THIS CHARGE. I asked specifically , "If this is not paid in twelve months, then does it revert to regular interest charged on the balance?" The answer was YES. What they did not disclose was that there is something called "deferred interest"..in other words, you have to pay interest on the amount you have already paid in the previous twelve months. THIS WAS NOT DISCLOSED.

I am very unhappy with Synchrony! I have several cards thru them and ALWAYS paid on time and above the min payment. (my fault) I had co-signed for a "friend" a few years ago to get his credit started. Well needless to say he has dropped off the face of the earth. Yes I know I am now responsible for this, but I can not get ANYONE who speaks English clearly or anyone who understands this situation, to help me figure out how to settle this in an easier way. The only thing I can get out of these people is them wanting their money! Which they will get, but I need someone who understands that I do not have the purchases he had made and help me get this settled without all the late fees that has accumulated and the fact that this has now affected MY credit. The people I have talked to do not care to listen to me.

THis is one of the worst banks to do business with. I made a payment less then 24 hrs late. I went on line & did the live chat , what a joke, these people think we are a bunch of mns. ( we are for dealing with them) I was able to get the late fee taken off, but it does not lower your monthly payment as they said they cant change in middle of billing cycle. but the credit is already showing ( in middle of cyle) figure this out - but it wont be subtracted from the payment due? when this account is paid , I will never do business with this bank again,

I have been charged $37.00 in late fees since my account has been open November 2015. I made two payments in Nicember too ensure that my payment iare on time. Bank receives my payment the first of every month The customer service manager refuse to review the history to assist August 20 2016. I made a previous call in Juky 2016! The customer service rep assisted and stated she would make the adjustments to my account. Once I revived my letter stating the only adjustment that was made us the 2.00 in finance charges I would like my account reviewed and the adjustments made. Professionally the bank knows it has made the mistake, because my loan is 18 month interest free I am grind charged 37,00 late fees.

This company is rude and uncooperative. As we were trying to buy a house we found out about a judgment that was on my credit report that was 5 years old and I never knew anything about. It took me weeks to find out any correct information about it because no one could ever even find a judgment on my account. After I finally got a hold of the right person and paid off the judgment they said it would take up to 15 days for the payment to process then I could call and "request" a release of judgment. After I saw the payment posted through my account I called to make my request and explained I needed it emailed or faxed to me so I could show my lenders and we could close on our house, the person I spoke too was very rude and said that everything has already been explained to me and the payment hasn't posted and for me to call back at 15 days then hung up on me when I tried to question her more and asked for a supervisor. They continued to be rude and refused to do anything to help.

I just canceled my account (about 10 minutes ago) at CareCredit (Synchrony Bank). After the promotional zero interest was not paid off in 18 months, my $1500 dollar bill that I have been paying had went down to about $900.00. but when the interest was applied the bill went back up to $1600 @ about 29.99% interest!!!!! So don't use them and look for other decent options. Don't be like me stupid!!!!! Be better than me not stupid!!!!

I had several cards with this company. I used to love their customer service. The customer service is now terrible! I cannot understand the representative speaking because of language barriers. I reported a fraudulent charge over 5 times, and twice I was told there was no record of me calling to report this. Now they have sent my claims to collections, when I call they tell me to call the collection agency. Horrible! Worst customer service ever!

This bank offered me $30 to use its Banana Republic credit card at 'other than Banana Republic' business. I issued transactions at several other businesses but NEVER received the $30.

In addition, the online banking site for the credit card fraudulently displays at button to push in order to contact the bank, however, when it is pushed nothing comes up. There is no way to contact anyone about the credit card except for the phone. When I called the number the person did not speak clear English, however, when I was able to understand what she said it was that I would not get the $30 that I was owed.

Finally, I overpaid the bill (I had not intended to close the account but did so after their fraudulent offer) and they are not showing the correct amount on the statement. There is a 'pending' transaction that has been sitting in the online 'recent transactions' status for over 3 weeks which is not accurate. When I called the business they said I would need to wait until the transaction was no longer pending. I asked how long that would be and they responded they did not know.

Horrible issues with communicating. Like others say - call in and have to go through crappy virtual world and very hard to get a person. Horrible website interface. Tried to report a lost card and they said I never did, BUT they had issued a replacement card, so how do you explain that? I signed up for autopay for the MINIMUM due, but they took the ENTIRE balance due and left me wiped out at the beginning of the month and actually took the payment before it was due!!! They know they made the mistake but will take 5-15 days to send out a check.

If there was an option below negative I would pick that. My issues with Synchrony bank started as soon as they took over my TJX account. I was going away on vacation and my payment was due during that time period. I made the payment before I left thinking I was all set. Well I start the process to purchase a house and am informed that I have a delinquency on my credit report from them. I contact customer service and they tell me I never made a July payment. I am able to view my account while I am on the phone with her and direct her to the TWO payments made in June. Apparently they counted both payments towards the June account. I explained the circumstance and requested that based on my prior excellent payment history that the non-payment be removed from my credit report. The lady was very nice and said that she would have it taken care of. Well about a week later I receive a letter in the mail that they reviewed my request and have determined that I did't make a payment in July so they would not be removing the negative reporting from my credit report. I then file a dispute about the entry with the credit reporting bureau. A few weeks after that I am contacted by my bank again saying that there is ANOTHER delinquency notice on that account. Synchrony Bank had put a notice that my August payment was late. My August payment was due on the 17th. This late notice was on the credit report on August 5th. I called again and asked how can my August payment be late when it isn't even due yet. The gentleman that I spoke with was unable to give me an answer. I decided that I no longer wanted to be a customer of Synchrony, however since I was in the midst of the mortgage process I could not close any accounts because it would negatively effect my credit score. Well I recently received two of those letters that other here have mentioned. Both of the accounts referenced in these letters were in excellent standing and I never had a late payment. Synchrony Bank has lowered the credit limit on one account (which has $37) on it and closed out another account I have had for years that did not have a balance. In both letters they cited my 'serious delinquencies' as one of the reasons for the actions they took. This is ridiculous and is effecting my ability to get my mortgage. I hope everyone cancels their accounts with Synchrony before they have their credit damaged.
