Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. Reviews (188)

Review: I was a customer of Con Edison from June 2012 to July 2013 when I lived in Queens, NY. During that time, every single bill was paid on time, in full. After I moved to New Jersey, Con Edison was supposed to send me a final bill which I did not receive. I did not receive any correspondence from Con Edison, and yesterday a collections agency called me to collect debt for the last unpaid bill. Con Edison never got in touch with me and never tried to contact me even though they had a valid phone number on file.

I am happy to pay off the balance, and would have done so months ago had I been made aware. I will not accept being at the mercy of a company and their unethical practices.Desired Settlement: I need Con Ed to send a letter to the credit bureaus to remove this debt collection from my credit history. I want a copy of that letter, I will pay the final bill as soon as I get the confirmation that this will be done.

To Whom It May Concern:

Review: This is a copy of the letter I sent to ConEd. As of this writing, I have not received a response from ConEd and the power in my area went out again on 12/**/2013.

I'd like to bring your attention to a complaint I have with your company's performance. I know you appreciate your customers and want to keep them happy, so I am certain you'll want to address this quickly.

Here's the problem: I have lived in Middle Village, New York for a little over five years, and since that time, my utility company has been ConEd of New York. We have had numerous power outages in my building and in the neighborhood, since I have moved into this area. So far, it has caused damage to my telephone system.

I try and notify ConEd of each outage, but sometimes its happens while I am at work and I come home to find that all my appliances need to be reset. The most recent power outage was today, December **, 2013. The weather was not an issue, no high winds to knock down a line, or anything that would cause this sort of thing to happen, it just went out. It took 2.5 hours to get the power back on.

The time before that was approximately a month earlier. Again, no storms to blame the cause of the failure, just a power outage.

Not once, have I seen a credit on my utility bill for the inconvenience that was caused for these numerous failures. Nor do ConEd employees seem overly concerned or apologetic when you call to report the outage.

Without electricity, I am unable to cook food, turn on the heat when it's cold out, or maintain the most basic appliances in my home. (My stove is electric, my heat is electric baseboard.) Obviously, during these times I have had to incur the expense of eating out, or running to the store to buy bottled water, or last winter, I actually had to leave my home because it was so cold it wasn't safe to stay there!

Here's what I'd like to see happen: I would like an apology for these inconveniences and an explanation of what your company is going to do to improve the quality of our service in this area. There is obviously a problem with the equipment, either being old or not being able to handle the current load, or something.

My overall experiences with your company have been fairly negative. Again, I am sure you are interested in satisfying your customers, so I hope you'll move quickly on this complaint. Thanks.Desired Settlement: The community of Middle Village (especially Middle Village North where I live) needs Con ED to repair the cause of the constant power outages in the area.

ConEd needs to provide me with confirmation the this is going to happen fairly quickly, since the bad weather is now upon us.

Review: I paid $270 in December 2013 with the expectation I would be granted a payment agreement and I was denied and asked to pay another $270 in January 2014 before I would be granted a payment arrangement. I have an asthmatic child who needs his treatments daily and can not be without electricity. I need the payment arrangement so that I can pay the order due balance as well as my bill. I have endured numerous financial problems in 2013 and fell behind and now I am in a better position to make the payments.Desired Settlement: I would like to be granted a payment arrangement based on the payment I made in December 2013.

Review: We have purchased a new house in August, since august we have been receiving both Electric and Gas bills. I have done everything I could to try to use our energy smartly, however, my bills kept on climbing month after month. Finally I have called them on Friday 1/** and discovered that the meter and the meter readings are not done on my property. When I have confronted the representative about it, they have became first very offensive, saying that I am reading the numbers off my neighbors meter. When in fact I have explained that no I am reading the meters which are physically attached to my house. Finally, they have admitted that they have screwed up, unfortunately to action is in place. I am absolutely beside myself that I had to prove to them that they were sooooo wrong all while they kept on accusing me. I am hoping that this will help expedite the resolution to the major screw up that occured due to ConEdison's negligence!Desired Settlement: I would like for ConEd to correct the problem, compensate for their stupidity and refund us the money that they have been steeling from us.

Dear [redacted]:

Review: To whomever it may concern,

I am writing regarding several billing issues that I have with Con Edison electric. Here is a bulleted summary of complaints:

Rate Increase: Our average bill for one month's service would run about $150. The bill for the one month of January to February is $323.24. When we called in inquire, Con Edison said they raised prices 40%, when in fact this is a 115% increase of our bill. How is this justified? Why did they raise rates 40%? Even if that is the case, there is no way our usage was higher in January than in December especially considering we took down all of our Christmas lights. I believe they didn't do an accurate reading because of the snow. We just want to investigate why a 40% increase in rates is something Con Edison can do on the fly without considering the economic situation of its customers.Desired Settlement: 1. We'd like to understand better why the bill is so expensive.

2. We'd like to see the rates come down. A 40% increase in a rate is just not reasonable.

Response:

We received your inquiry through the Revdex.com regarding your high bill complaint.

A review of your account determined that your billing summary from February **, 2014 was based on an actual reading, which falls in line with previous consumption history. Please keep in mind that energy supply prices increased during the period in question due to the extremely cold weather in January. You may also have been using more energy this winter to stay warm. The typical residential electric customer's bill was approximately 22 percent higher than the same time last year. The reason for this is that natural gas is used to generate most of the electricity used in our area. Please note that Con Edison doesn't control the price of natural gas or electricity, and does not make a profit. We buy energy at the best price possible and provide it to our customers at cost.

Our customers have the option of choosing an Energy Service Company (ESCO) other than Con Edison for their electricity and/or natural gas supply. The Public Service Commission (PSC) oversees the ESCOs and determines which are eligible to serve customers in New York. ESCOs offer a variety of programs and services that may be of interest to you. We encourage our customers to shop around and compare prices, but you are under no obligation to accept any offers made by the ESCOs. Regardless of whether a customer purchases their energy supply from Con Edison or another company, Con Edison will still deliver their energy safely and reliably.

We have enclosed, the Power of Green brochure, which provides you with helpful ways to lower your energy needs. If you have access to the Internet, you will find more information of energy saving tips on our web site at [redacted] You may also contact our Green Team at ###-###-####.

Review: Con Edison had to replace the main electrical line to my house. They sent a private contractor over who trenched across my driveway to bury the new electrical service. All was well until about a week later when the patched area sunk. I now have a 3 foot by 8 foot 4 inch deep hole across my driveway. I have reported this to con edison on 2 occasions and emergency tickets were created. It has been 2 weeks since my first inquiry and nothing has been done. I would appreciate at least someone contacting me to let me know when the work will be completed. I have been told for 2 weeks that it would be done this week.Desired Settlement: I would just like Con Ed to repair the area in my driveway in a timely manner.

Review: My wife(who is the current account holder for account #[redacted]) and I have been customers with Con Edison for several years now. Just recently we received a bill which included a charge of $515.00 for some form of required deposit. I find this to be a bit concerning especially that the account was established well before this bill was generated. I always understood that Con Edison would request this during the conception of a new account. I know this because I had to pay this in the past for a old account that I had with Con Edison. I am reaching out for assistance and feel that this is unfair to now charge me for a deposit well after I have established an account with Con Edison.Desired Settlement: I am requesting Con Edison to remove the charge of $515.00 from my account.

Business

Response:

We have received your inquiry through the Revdex.com regarding your request for a deposit waiver.

First, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience this matter caused you. We would like to take this opportunity to answer the questions you raised.

In your correspondence you mentioned being billed $515.00 for some form of a deposit. The reason a deposit was required on your account is because of your payment history. Payment is due when you receive your bill, and is considered late if it is not received by the time your next bill is prepared. Customers who make a partial payment of less than one-half of the unpaid bills are also delinquent.

A review of your account shows that on July **, 2015, you spoke with [redacted]. He issued an extension on your account to pay your remaining balance of $200.00. If this payment is posted to your account by August *, 2015, as a courtesy, the current deposit request will be waived.

Sincerely,

Con Edison
