Review: I signed up once, was having problem accessing, and mistakenly signed up again. Then still had trouble, signed up with a different credit card and email account. Two years later, I'm being billed for 3 accounts, for $1800 total. I have a bookkeeper take care of my bills and did not realize the automatic billing was taking place. I never used any of the accounts beyond the initial search. When I asked for a refund, I was told the fine print that I agreed to at the beginning set it all up. While I'm sure they are legally correct, I think this is an unscrupulous practice because they never contact you when two accounts are on the same email, or when they're renewing, or when you haven't used the service. They should be forced to make their practices transparent to unsuspecting customers.Desired Settlement: I would like my money refunded. They have agreed to refund $300. I think at least one year's worth of billing should be refunded.

Response:

First and foremost, customers are only allowed one account per email address and credit card. This helps to avoid confusion and helps prevent the same person from signing up for multiple accounts. Customer's are informed about our products throughout the checkout process. Automatic renewals are explained clearly and concisely in standard text on every page of checkout. When shopping online, it is the customer's responsibility to read and understand what is being purchased. PeopleFinders.com does not monitor the usage of any membership and simply supplies members with the ability to run unlimited searches. It is the customer's responsibility to cancel any memberships they no longer use or want.

We have reviewed our files and our records show an order for a monthly membership ($24.95) was processed by this customer on 4/12/2012. The name and email provided on this complaint were used to create this account. It was created using an American Express credit card. Then, on 5/26/2012, we show a separate purchase being made under an entirely separate name and email address. This other account was created using a Visa credit card. This other user selected our monthly membership as well. In addition to the monthly PeopleFinders membership, this other user affirmatively selected to enroll in the PeopleFidners Rewards program. This account (under a different person's name and information) had two memberships selected on 5/26/2012.

Our customer service was available to take a cancellation at any time from either of these two users. They failed to contact us to cancel membership until a phone call from this customer to a representative on 3/25/2014, 11 months after the memberships had been initiated. These charges are normally non-refundable per our Terms of Use. As a courtesy, we have refunded four charges of $24.95 to the American Express credit card, four charges of $24.95 to the Visa card, and four charges of $24.99 to the Visa card. There are no further refunds available due to the Terms agreed to and amount of time that has passed since the charges occurred.

Review: I went onto PeopleFinders.com to find information on my mother, which was incorrect. They went and charged me three different times. They charged me .97 and 1.48 which I approved but they also surprised me with 12.48 that I did not approve of. I did not even know that I was charged 12.48 until I looked online at my account.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund of the 12.48.

Review: Very deceptive and unethical. Advertises a low one time use charge then automatically sets up an account to bill your credit card each month for a recurring $24.95. Then does not provide a clear way to stop the "membership". Customer Care Center does not care. Could be a useful legitimate business but chooses to be deceptive.Desired Settlement: Refund for $24.95 for July billing and $24.95 for August billing to my credit card.

At the time of purchase you chose to receive a discounted price ($0.95) for signing up for a 3 day trial to our Membership. This membership allowed you to receive an unlimited number of:•People Searches – Get the facts you need to find anyone, anywhere•Email Searches – Obtain email addresses, or learn about the owner of any address•Marriage Searches – Find out if a man or woman has ever been married•Divorce Searches – Check the divorce status of any man or woman•Property Searches – Learn about any piece of property, including the current owner and valueYou had the option to cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone. We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee on the fourth day, and for every month thereafter. Per your online request on 9/1/2015 your membership was cancelled. You then called in where the representative confirmed the membership had been cancelled per your request. Then, later that day, the account was completely closed out via your online account manager and the most recent membership fee of $24.95 was refunded as a one-time courtesy. There are no further refunds available per the Terms you agreed to.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

Review: Deceptive business practices. You purchase a search ($9 and change) on their site, and in the process you inadvertently and unknowingly, are signed up for a monthly recurring charge of $24.99. I used the service 10-27-2014, was then charged $24.99 on 11-4, got my statement 12-8, noticed the charge and contacted them. They immediately credited the account, however, my account had already been charged another $24.99 on 12-4, and they refused to reverse the first charge. When I discovered this first charge, I went to their site. Checked 'my account', it said I was not set up for recurring charges, but yet on the same page it said I would be continued to be charged for renewal of my account unless I contacted customer care. Which way is it?Unethical, period!Desired Settlement: Refund of both 11-4 and 12-4 charges of $24.99. They have already agreed to refund the 12-4 charge. They should also be shamed into changing their unethical and misleading business practice.

Business

Response:

The charge of $24.99 is for PeopleFinders Rewards program. This program allows you to receive discounted prices on the many of the reports offered on our website. This extra service is presented to our customers through a full-page offer directly after checkout. Users may either accept or decline the offer. Our records show that on 10/27/2014 you affirmatively selected to enroll by choosing "Yes, sign me up for PeopleFinders Rewards" instead of declining the offer directly below. PeopleFinders Rewards members also have access to-* Free self-background checks every month* Free family safety alerts show registered sex offenders in your neighborhoodWe did not receive notification that you wished to cancel this within your 7 day trial period, therefore you were billed $24.99 on the eighth day, and for every month thereafter. Per your emailed request on 12/9/2014, and as a onetime courtesy, we have refunded one charge of $24.99 for the most recent month of membership. The remaining November membership fee will remain on your account per the Terms you agreed to.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I did not sign up for a rewards program. And by their own admission, it must not have been something they offered up front and straightforward. I did not cancel within 7 days because I did not know I had signed up for it. No e-mail confirmation, nothing. No notice that I had been charged. Nothing. No notice when the 2nd charge was made a month later. I did not know either charge had been made until receiving my monthly statement on 12-9, at which time I acted immediately and discovered both charges. While they have refunded one charge, they should refund both.

Consumer

Response:

Customer states: The company has sent me notice of the December refund and I will await for November's refund as well. If they do not follow through I will call back.

Business

Response:

We have closed your account entirely and have refunded the $24.99 November Membership fee. Please allow 2 to 5 business days for this additional refund to appear on your statement. Understand that you will no longer be eligible for any further exceptions to the Terms you agree to on PeopleFinders.com.

Review: Peoplefinders automatically enrolled me and charged me on 12/1 and 1/1 $24.95 for a service that I never signed up for. I attempted to make a single search for a reverse phone number (the search was worthless) which I thought I had agreed to pay less than a $1 for. Instead, I was charged $24.95 for two months before I saw it on the first bill note that the 12/1 payment did not show up on my credit card until the period 12/3 - 1/2, so I suspect that they backdated the bill. After getting the bill today (1/6), I immediately called people finders and was told that they would remove me from the list but that they would not refund me the money. In short, this is a total scam.Thank you for your response.[redacted]Desired Settlement: I would like to be refunded the two months payments (2 x 24.95 = 49.90).

Business

Response:

PeopleFinders.com is a self-service website. Nothing is pre-selected or pre-checked. At the time of purchase you had the option to choose a regular priced Reverse Phone Report for $9.95 or the same product at a discounted price of $0.95 with a Trial Membership. Our records show the membership option was affirmitively selected by you on 11/27/2014. You had the option to cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone. We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee on the fourth day, and for every month thereafter. Per your this complaint and as a onetime courtesy, we will grant one refund of $24.95 for the most current month of membership. Please allow 2-5 business days for the refund to process back into your credit or debit card. The remaining membership fee is non-refundable per the Terms you agreed to.

PeopleFinders.com cannot control what other websites display. We are one of hundreds of sites that provide public record data. Upon reviewing the additional information you provided we still cannot find the listing you are referring to on our website. Please contact us by phone directly if you still see the listing on our site today so that a representative (or supervisor) can diagnose what is preventing the listing from being removed.

Review: I paid the $19.95 for a 3 Day Background Check Membership Trial. I contacted customer service to ask the representative to refund the charges because they didn't deliver what they advertised. The report just had basic information such as name, Address and phone number. When you click on the background check tab, it just said not found. First I spoke to a representative and she said that I should have read the terms of use that explicitly states"they do not represent or warrant that the results provided will be 100% accurate and up to date". This TERMS OF SERVISE are nowhere to be found on their main page or second page or third page and what's worst, they advertise with BOLD LETTERS: Why Use People Search?Obtain a current address and phone numberReconnect with someone from your pastVerify a person's addressFind out who a phone number belongs toPerform a background checkPeoplefinders.com provides services that are misleading. They provided me with old address and phone information and no background check! I also spoke to the Supervisor [redacted] and she pretty much said that's how they do businesses, and that if people don't update their information, pretty much it's not their problem. I am requesting my money be refunded in FULL. My membership service was only 30 minutes, and I cancelled online when I realized PeopleFinders is another way to scam people. I will be following up with a letter to [redacted] to express my disappointment on this website and its services.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund to my credit card for the full amount.

Review: I used their service one time to find an address for a one time fee. They charged my card every month 24.95 since nov of 2012. Would only rebate $95

I used their service to look up address in November of 2012. I talked to an agent at that time on the phone and specifically told him I wanted a one time fee and not a monthly subsciption. He assured me he would take care of it. They have been charging my credit card since November of 2012 24.95/ mo. Or $374.45. I got on the line with them and my credit card company and they will only rebate me $95. They would not provide any information as to how I signed up for monthly fee. Desired Settlement: $274.45 credit to my card.

Initial Business Response

We have reviewed our files and our records show that an order for a search was conducted by [redacted] on 11/2/2012. At that time Mr. [redacted] had a choice to accept a special discounted price available with a monthly membership or the full price for the search without membership. The membership option was affirmatively selected by [redacted] on 11/2/2012. That membership provided a three day trial to try our services. Our membership service provides unlimited searches and other features for a monthly fee. This is clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the initial order selection page. Then the consumer is provided with an entire page outlining the terms of the membership which clearly and conspicuously states that after the initial trial, unless the consumer cancels the service the service will continue monthly and the card they provided will be charged until they tell us to cancel their membership to avoid future charges. The membership is mentioned no less than three times on three pages before the order is complete.

Given that members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to avoid future charges. For the period of his membership Mr. [redacted] was charged each month. During that time, our customer service was available to take her cancellation at any time. If his intention was to run only one search, then he had in fact selected the wrong product.

He failed to contact us to cancel until a phone call to a representative eleven months after the membership had been activated. Per his phone request, and as a onetime courtesy, we agreed to refund four charges at $24.95 each. In conclusion, [redacted] has received credits for four months of service totaling $99.80, his account is closed and there will be no further automatic billing.

Final Consumer Response

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)

I accept their refund as I only used one address. I did talk to a representative on the phone while I processed the transaction. He advised me and assured me there would be only one charge. Peoplefinder has not metioned that their research probably found that I only used their service once. I never signed on again. The advice I received from their representative was wrong. Their representative is in error here not me.

Final Business Response

We have reviewed our records and found that on 9/10/2013 we refunded four charges of $24.95 each as promised. We show that chargebacks were issued on these four charges despite the fact that we agreed to refund them. This means that Mr. [redacted] has received double refunds; four refunds on 9/10/2013 from us and the same four transactions refunded again on 9/14/2013 from his bank. Because of this our account was debited twice for his refunds. We will be contacting his bank to remedy this issue. We have researched his registration process and found that [redacted] did not register from our IP address through a representative over the phone but registered from his IP address. We apologize for any misunderstanding but before entering billing info members are presented with a full page disclosure explaining you are signing up for a membership. He would have seen this on his own computer screen. We would be happy to avoid this type of confusion going forward by refunding the remaining in the future by refunding five 2013 membership fees at $24.95 each. Mr. [redacted] must allow these refunds TO POST to his account and not dispute them through his credit card company. Again, he must NOT do a chargeback with his credit card company or we will need to reverse these refunds as we have had to do for the previous batch from 9/10/2013. The two charges for his membership that took place in 2012 are non-refundable. In conclusion, the total refunds we are processing today are nine transactions of $24.95 each totaling $224.55.

Review: This business did not give me my money back after I received the wrong information from the product.

07/09/2013 I purchased this background check and the information was not correct.Desired Settlement: I just want my 24.95 back from this website because I did not get what I should have from this product.

Review: This company is a fraud! False advertising and not clear on billing policy. I purchased what I believed to be a FREE three day trial & was charged $19.95 for search & .99 for report. I want a refund to my bank for ALL CHARGES incurred. Information was not accurate! Customer service representative at Peoplefinder was rude & stated information was clear & refused to give refund. Transferred to a SUPERVISOR and of course, it went to a voice mail. As I read on Revdex.com site, this is not the first complaint of this type. I did tell representative that was going to call my bank tomorrow. Please advise what is best option to handle this. Should I contact bank regarding dispute?Desired Settlement: $20.94 refunded to my bank checking account as soon possible. I had to cancel a automatic payment due to these UNAUTHORIZED charges!

Business

Response:

We have reviewed your account and found that the product you selected was a Comprehensive Background Report plus a free trial at $19.95. At the time of purchase you had the choice between a normal price Background Report at $29.95 or the same product at a discounted price ($19.95) with a free trial. You received a discount because you signed up for a 3 day free trial to our Membership. The trial refers to the Membership only. You have 3 days to cancel the trial to the Membership to avoid being automatically charged for the monthly membership fee. Your original purchase is not affected. We have cancelled your trial per your request over the phone on 9/30/2014. You will not be billed the membership fee of $24.95 for the Membership because you cancelled within 3 days.

The charge of $19.95 is for the Comprehensive Background Report ordered. Our records show that, additionally, you ran another five Background Reports utilizing the trial membership. The charge is non-refundable per the Terms you agreed to and the amount of data accessed through the added membership.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because:

Information was inaccurate and misleading. I feel this company knows the information relayed is inaccurate and they still continue to charge you $19.95 even though it says "free trial". Information was not clear regarding "free trial" offer. I will never be misled by another company like this. I've found most online businesses such as this are all fraudulent and untrustworthy.

Please be sure all of my information is erased from your database as I do not want anymore charges billed to my bank card!

I am not happy with my most recent experience with Peoplefinders.com I signed up for their promotional free trial offer at $19.95 for the first month with it being promoted to only have to pay $2.95 to cancel with in 3 days. I wasn't satisfied with the service and the information I got so I canceled and got charged both the $2.95 and the 19.95 fee and when I called to get this resolved the person on the phone was less than helpful. She told me the normal charge was close to $40 which you can't see on their site and because of that I wouldn't be refunded my money. This company is a scam stay far away!!!!!

Review: This company is a scam! I spent $39.95 to get absolutely nothing that I couldn't have gotten on my own. Their promises of a full background check are lies. I called them after spending half an hour trying to get the information, finally got a report from them and found it didn't contain any information that I didn't already know AND some of the things I knew but they didn't have on their report! I called to ask them immediately to ask for my $39.95 to be refunded and they refused saying that they can't get all records because of a privacy clause some states might have. Funny that all the things I was looking for were from the same state and some were reported and some not. This is such a scam and shame on The Revdex.com for giving them an A+ rating when there have been NOTHING but complaints about them when I investigated further to see if anyone else had complained. I would hope that the Revdex.com will pay attention to all the people who have written complaints to them and let others know this is a horrible company to do business with. After all this is suppose to be your job.Desired Settlement: I want my $39.95 credited back to my VISA

Business

Response:

Our records confirm you selected the 3 Months of UNLIMITED Reports for $38.95. You affirmatively click the check-box stating "I ... understand that my card will be automatically billed ... until I cancel." This clearly and conspicuously states that your card will be automatically billed. We did not receive a cancellation therefore; you were billed $38.95 every three months for the duration of your membership. Per your request over email on 10/8/2015 your membership was cancelled. Your membership will expire on 11/22/2015 and you can enjoy unlimited People, Background and Reverse phone searches until then. Given that users have access to unlimited searching and other features for a monthly fee, our Terms do not allow for refunds.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because:The statement that they "clearly and conspicuously" relate that my credit card will be billed until I cancel is a load of horse crap. If it was there it was not clear apparent that I was signing up for anything more than the limit three months that I thought I was. I cannot recreate the sign up page as an attachment to prove this but they are relying on this deception to bill people for services that are NOT clear and conspicuous. Even if I don't get my money back, they should be reported to the attorney general for deceptive business practices.

Just bad, no information that is useful and totally out of date. I did a background check on myself to see HOW bad.....Just no way that anyone should pay for this, no value, no information, and putting my company at risk. I am so sorry I did not check here before I spent $20..

Review: Review: On March 25, 2015 I visited peoplefinders.com to conduct a reverse phone lookup. I opted in for a $0.95. I was aware that I would be billed a $24.95 membership fee after the so called trial expired. The results of my search was inconclusive and I deemed the service ineffective. When my card was billed on August 31, 2015 for $24.95, I called peoplefinders.com's at [redacted] immediately. I complained that I was tricked into a 3 day trial. I was was informed the charge wouldn't be refunded but that my auto-renew would be cancelled.I asked to speak to a supervisor and was routed to a message.Desired Settlement: I want my money refunded and to make sure that they are unable to deduct any more from my account.

Response:

At the time of purchase on 8/25/2015 you chose to receive a discounted price for signing up for a 3 day trial to our Membership. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee on the fourth day. Per your request over the phone on 8/31/2015 your membership was cancelled. As this is after the three day trial period you had already been billed the membership fee. The charge is non-refundable per the Terms you agreed to. In conclusion your account is closed, there will be no further automatic billing and you are responsible for the initial trial cost of $0.95 and one membership fee of $24.95.

Review: This company has charged $49.54 from my account that I did not understand. When I tried to contact the company to resolve the issue, the link was broken and unavailable. In an effort to discontinue charges, I will now have to block my card, and hopefully dispute the charges with my financial institution.Details:On 4/29/2013 I did a search on one person for a promotional charge of $0.95. The purchase seemed clear that it would be a one time charge with no additional contracts involved. I found the person I needed and it was very helpful.Since, I have been charged twice for something I don't understand, and don't want.-First charge: 5/1/13 I was charged $24.95-Second charge: 5/5/13 I was charged $24.99Even if this company did manage to legally squeeze some unwanted contacts into my $0.95 purchase:1- I don't want it2- It was hidden and unclearOn 5/7/2013 I went onto peoplefinder.com's website and selected their "Contact Us" link. I filled out the three required fields including my name, email address, and a copy of my complaint. Once I tried to submit the three fields, it said a field was incomplete. I rechecked the three fields, and tried again, still didn't work. Their "About Us" section provided no further contact information.

Consumer's Final Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

I do not accept this response for the following reasons: 1- You. only explained one of the two charges. 2- I feel even the explained charge was hidden and unethical. 3- You have not offered a refund of $49.54. I have researched how you have handled these complaints in the past and you have offered refunds before. Refund the $49.54 and I will accept the offer.

Business' Final Response

Hello,

Our records show you affirmatively selected two trial memberships online on 4/27/2013 for two different services. We did not receive a cancelation for either one of these trials and, as stated on the site several times, both would automatically renew.

The charge for $24.99 is for PeopleFinders Rewards program. This allows you to get discounts on the different reports offered on our website. We did not receive notification that you wished to cancel this within your 7 day trial period, therefore you were billed $24.99.

As stated in our Terms of Use, we do not offer refunds for the products you ordered.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call our Customer Care Team during the hours listed below at (800) XXX-XXXX. Thank you for contacting PeopleFinders.com.

Review: People finders are deceptive with their auto charging practice. The site deliberately makes it difficult to locate the canceling portion so they can continue to charge your bank each month. I was charged for 2 months at $24.95/per month. The customer service rep was not helpful and offered no refund.Desired Settlement: refund for 2 months

Review: I signed up for one month of service in August 2013. As a lawyer, I carefully read the contract and information when I signed up for one month of service. The one-month of service was only a one-time use. Eight months later, I learned that Peoplefinder.com has been charging me for services every month using my company account. The company simply charged my debit card without my authorization. There behavior is both fraudulent and criminal. When I contacted the company, employees were completely rude and refused to credit my account. I am deeply concerned about this company having access to my credit card information and disturbed by the blatant theft against consumers. Legal action should be taken against this fraudulent and scam business. I would like to warn all consumers to never conduct business with Peoplefinder.com and that the company will bill for services that you do not sign up for even if the website states it will not.Desired Settlement: I would like to be repaid for the unauthorized charges on my credit card, which was for eight months of $24.95 (a total of $199.60 that was stolen from my credit card).

Response:

We have reviewed our files and the product you selected was not a one time only fee. In fact, nowhere on PeopleFinders.com do we offer one month of service as a one time only fee. PeopleFinders.com is a self service website. It is the user's responsibility to read and understand what products they are selecting. The monthly membership is clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the initial product selection page. Then the customer is provided with an entire section on the checkout page, directly under the total in standard text, outlining the terms of the membership. It clearly states again that, unless you cancel the service the service will continue monthly and the card you provided will be charged until you tell us to cancel. The membership is mentioned no less than two times on two pages of checkout.

Contrary to your stated intention to use the service for only one month, the membership was continuously used for five months. Our records show this account was accessed 47 times from August 2013-December 2013. Each time, the login came from the same computer as the initial purchase. In addition, hundreds of searches were ran utilizing the membership. If your intention was to use our service for one month then you would need to cancel the monthly membership you selected and stop utilizing the membership.

Given that members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to avoid future charges. For the period of your membership you were charged each month. During that time, our customer service was available to take you cancellation at any time. You failed to contact us to cancel until several threatening phone calls to our Customer Care team on 4/18/2014, nine months after the membership was initiated. As a courtesy, we agreed to refund three charges of $24.95. You will be responsible for the other membership fees.

A Rip-off. You have to pay before finding out they have no useful information. I paid for a report that didn't have a date of death or criminal records and they searched for marriage licenses in states he didn't even live in. Why? They should at the very least let a person know what records they have (w/o showing info) before they pay and not just that they may have the records.
