Review: Misleading the consumer about what is actually being purchased

I thought that I was signing up for a one-time-only service to find one person on People Finders. Instead, they have been taking approx. $50 out of my account since June. This website is misleading and confusing and I think I should get most of my money back. They won't consider it and it's very upsetting.Desired Settlement: I would like $200.00 back in a refund. By accident I've paid around $250 and I think that a $200 refund is more than reasonable.

Initial Business Response

On 5/28/2013 you had a choice to accept a special discounted price available with a monthly membership or the full price for the search without membership. If you did not wish to enroll in membership you could have choose the full price for one report. Our records show you affirmatively selected the discounted price with the monthly membership. It provides a three day trial to try our services. Our membership service supplies unlimited searches and other features for a monthly fee. This was clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the initial order selection page. Then you were provided with an entire page outlining the terms of the membership which clearly and conspicuously states that after the initial trial, unless the consumer cancels the service the service will continue monthly and the card they provided will be charged until you tell us to cancel their membership to avoid future charges. The membership is mentioned no less than three times on three pages before the order is complete.

Given that members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to avoid future charges. For the period of the membership you were be charged each month. During that time, our customer service is available to take the cancellation at any time. You failed to contact us until a phone call to a representative on 10/7/2013, ten months after the membership had been activated. At that time the call was escalated to a supervisor who agreed to refund two membership fees at $24.95 and two at $24.99 totaling four refunds. These refunds were granted as a one-time courtesy and as an exception to policy. In conclusion, the other membership fees are non-refundable per the terms you agreed to, your account is closed and there will be no further automatic billing.

Review: I purchased the 3 day trial product on Oct 3, 2014. I cancelled on October 5, 2014. I checked my cancellation of product on the website again on October 6, 2014. It said inactive. Even though I "cancelled" within the 3 day period, I was on "Autopay" and billed $24.95. If you use Peoplefinders watch out for this also. They try to trick you even when you are deactivating your service. The big button that you would press to confirm deactivation on most sites (which many would press without reading) confirms that you want to continue your account!Even though I saw this and deactivated my account, I was still charged and when I logged back onto my account on October 20, 2014, my account was active again! My guess is it was reactivated because it auto-renewed even though I deactivated/cancelled the account.I called customer service and they said it was a non-cancellable fee so, no refund.Desired Settlement: Refund of $24.95

Response:

At the time of purchase you chose to receive a discounted price for signing up for a 3 day trial to our Membership. You had the option to cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone. We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial had ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee on the fourth day. Per this complaint, and as a onetime courtesy, we will grant one refund of $24.95 for the most current month of membership. Please allow 2-5 business days for the refund to process back into your credit or debit card.

Business

Response:

We feel we have already addressed these concerns. Cancelling a membership is the same as canceling the automatic renewal.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because:

Revdex.com, please go onto their site and try it yourself to experience it. I still reject their communications as what peoplefinders is saying is deceptive and untrue. I canceled my subscription but did not turn off auto renew. They said cancel in 3 days. Their site is misleading at best. You need to try it yourself to understand it and understand that what they are saying and how it is presented on their website is not good business and deceptive.

Also, please note, I am now receiving spam at the email website that I gave peoplefinders when I registered with them that I have never received before. Can you please have peoplefinders respond to this, why this is happening and how to turn it off?

Thank you.

Review: I used Peoplefinders once several months ago using an advertised $.99 service, which for some reason cost $24.00. The service was next to useless, however I knowingly used it. I was unaware that the company would debit my bank account some $24 a month in perpetuity. (I do not have an account with them - I can't sign in to the website: and the company does not send me a password to sign in using their website using their "recover password function" - obviously that is because I do not have an account with them even though they charge me every month for a service which I have only used once). The barriers to communicate with the company are significant, and apparently I need to spend all day on the phone to get to talk to someone that could address this problem. I have been unsuccessful in contacting them.Desired Settlement: It may be impossible to get a refund (reading the website disclaimer(s)). For the record I would like my money back for the past 2 months that they have been debiting my bank account against my wishes. I desire official confirmation that Peoplefinders will discontinue debiting my bank account, and that they understand that I do not desire their service(s). This is a fair request, and I can not communicate this request to the company any other way than to complain to the Revdex.com.

Response:

We have reviewed our records and found an account under your name. It is under a different email address than the one provided on this complaint. Our records show you successfully logged in and cancelled this account through your Account Manager on 10/23/2014.

At the time of purchase on 6/16/2014 you chose to receive a discounted price ($0.95) for signing up for a 3 day trial to our Membership. This membership allowed you to receive an unlimited number of:

•People Searches – Get the facts you need to find anyone, anywhere

•Email Searches – Obtain email addresses, or learn about the owner of any address

•Social Profile Searches – See updates on all of your friend’s social profiles in one spot

•Marriage Searches – Find out if a man or woman has ever been married

•Divorce Searches – Check the divorce status of any man or woman

•Property Searches – Learn about any piece of property, including the current owner and value

You had the option to cancel this membership trial via your account manager on the website, via email or via phone. We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, as stated on each page of checkout, you were charged the $24.95 membership fee on the fourth day and for every month thereafter. During the five month period of your membership our Customer Care department was available to take your cancellation at any time. Per this complaint, and as a onetime courtesy, we will grant one refund of $24.95 for the most current month of membership. Please allow 2-5 business days for the refund to process back into your credit or debit card. Your PeopleFinders.com account is also closed.

Review: I utilized peoplefinders.com online on 31st Oct 2015. Upon using their service, I found the information that was provided was way outdated.Hence, withing minutes after signing in I cancelled the service. However, the representative, over the phone stated that I will be charged $19.95.When I asked her why I am billed so much when their website stated only $2.95 if cancelled within 3 days she was very rude and stated that any cancellation will be still be billed $19.95. To my surprise, my credit card statement showed two transactions $19.95 for the date 10/31/2015 and $2.95 for the date 11/4/2015. I felt cheated and tricked and billed huge even though I cancelled it within few minutes. This is quite unacceptable and very unprofessional.Desired Settlement: I would like the peoplefinders.com take measures in refunding the $19.95 that was billed in excess to my credit card. I would also like to tell them that they should not be doing these type of wrong billing. Most importantly, the representatives should be polite and adjust the billing rightaway (when customers contact them over the phone) rather than doing the adjustment only after customers make these type of complaints on a reputed Revdex.com and other sites (for it spoils their reputation).

Business

Response:

There were two things the customer signed up for on 10/31/15. The 1st product was a Background Report on [redacted] for $19.95. We provided them with all public record information that we have available on this person. This product is normally $39.95, however they received it at a discounted price for signing up for a Membership as well. The membership is billed at $24.95 a month. If the customer cancels withing the first 3 days, they only have to pay $2.95. So, when the customer called in for support they canceled their membership , there fore they were not billed the $24.95. Since they did so within the 3 days , they were only billed $2.95 for the membership. The $19.95 was for a different product, once services are rendered on that it is not refundable. Our Terms of Use state this.

Biggest ripoff on the planet. I deserve to lose my money for being such a heel. Scam.

This is a scam. They advertise a 95 cent 'free trial' then get your card information and automatically withdraw 24.95 until you catch on, call them, and request to 'cancel' a subscription that you never knew you were making.

Review: I used peoplefinders.com only once in August of 2013. I was signed up without my knowledge for a monthly billing of $24.95. I discovered this yesterday and promptly called them. They refunded me for three months back to the first of the year. However, I was not refunded for the last four months of 2013. This issue may also relate to their online advertising.Desired Settlement: I would like a reimbursement for four months ($99.80) to my Discover card from which I made the payment in the first place.

Response:

PeopleFinders.com is a self-service website. Users select the product they wish to purchase and proceed through checkout on their own. We have reviewed our files and our

records show that an order for a search was conducted by this customer. on 8/6/2013 At that

time they had a choice to accept a special discounted price available with a

monthly membership or the full price for the search without membership. The membership option was affirmatively

selected by them. That membership

provided a three day trial to try our services.

Our membership service provides unlimited searches and other features

for a monthly fee. This is clearly and

conspicuously disclosed on the initial order selection page. Then again on the payment information page directly below the total there is a section outlining the terms of the membership which clearly and conspicuously

states that after the initial trial, unless the consumer cancels the service

the service will continue monthly and the card they provided will be charged

until they tell us to cancel their membership to avoid future charges. The membership is mentioned no less than

two times on two pages of checkout before the order is complete.

Given that

members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms

do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to

avoid future charges. For the period of his membership the customer was charged

each month. During that time, our customer service was available to take the cancellation

at any time. We did not receive a

contact from the customer until eight months

after the membership was initiated. Per this request over the phone we closed the account and, as a one time courtesy, agreed to refund three charges of $24.95. In conclusion, the account is closed, there will be no further automatic billing and we

have provided three months of

refunds. The remaining membership fees are non-refundable per the Terms agreed to.

Review: I went into the website to find information about a person that works with A/C and who's number (the one I had) was disconnected. When I completed the transaction the system gave me a message saying the transaction was not approved so I re-entered again with the same results. I did enter another card information and this time the transaction went through. The information I received was inaccurate so I never was able to contact the person I was looking for. When I saw the charges have been processed 3 times in both cards I called and the lady told me she would send me an e-mail with the cancellation. The next week I was charged again for a full month and when I called the lady told me they did not have record of cancellation and I realized the charge had been processed with 2 different companies. Peoplefinders 800-718-8997 and CHKMATE INSTANTCHECKMA 866 4905980, the person at peoplefinders said she did not have record of cancellation and I never received the e-mail with the cancellation from Chckmate.Just today after the aggravation and the bad manners of the agent at Peoplefinders I received the cancellation e-mail after I paid $26.00 to get no information. I agreed to pay $1.00 and that was it, even when I did not find accurate information.Desired Settlement: Reimbursement of the $25.90 that I was charged. I did not received the information I requested plus their system told me twice the transaction have not been approved so I did not have any reason to request cancellation twice specially because I called for cancellation on both charges not knowing there were 2 different sites. Their own system transfered me to the other website. There are 4 charges one for $0.47 another for $0.48 and $24.95 in one card, and $1.00 in my other card.

Review: this service claims to be "free" but it's not. the moment you search even yourself, the first result you get is a shopping cart page that makes you sign up for an ad-hoc search or extended membership. When you opt for the cheaper ad-hoc membership, it pulls up basic details about the subject person. It then provides two buttons that indicate you can click for a Background Check or Criminal Records, again for an additional fee. So you pay the additional fee (around $10 bucks), and it returns NOTHING after running a query before your eyes. It doesn't even show the person's name who it just provided general info about. The results look like a glitch, so naturally, you run it again. NOTHING AGAIN. Their customer service dept says that this is completely legitimate. They don't see how any of this is fraudulent. Even when you bring to their attention that the same query was run several times because it looks like a system glitch, they say "you must have run it on the same person to see if anything changed in their public records." Seriously, a reasonable person would expect public records to change on a person 5x in a matter of five minutes. They are playing stupid. They know this is a scam, and they stick to a weak script that they prepared in advance to justify their scam.Desired Settlement: they can refund my $10 or they can simply reset the number of search vouchers. They show I used 4/5. They can set it back to 0 and allow me to use 5, now that I know they really don't have any information on anyone beyond basic information until you run it for the first time.

We offer a free preliminary search which will indicate what information is available upon purchase for each listing. We offer this to ensure that you are fully aware of what information you will receive upon making a purchase. We have reviewed the reports available on your account and found they are generated normally. PeopleFinders has access to billions of public records, including the most recent and 40-years worth of historical data. This allows us to provide information about most every person or business in the United States. Public records are created from a variety of sources, including phone directories, property records, birth and death records, magazine subscriptions and voter registration cards. Although PeopleFinders provides public records, we do not create or modify them in any way. We are only able to display the information provided in each record, so we cannot guarantee their accuracy. New public records are created every day, so PeopleFinders is always able to offer the most up-to-date and accurate information possible; however, this information must be publicly reported by the person. Our records show that after the initial purchase on 5/20/2015 a five pack of Background Report Vouchers was purchased for $9.95. Each one was subsequently used, the last being successfully used recently on 6/2/2015. All vouchers are now used but as a courtesy we would be more than happy to run an additional search for you at no additional cost to obtain the information you are searching. The free courtesy search will remain on your account until it is used. You may elect to have that free exchange search ran at any time. Just call our number and a representative will run your search for you, free of charge. The charges are non-refundable per the Terms you agreed to.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me, assuming they provide me with the additional services that they assured would be available in their response. I do believe that the way their site is set up with cause others to have the same experience that I did. It is very misleading.

Business

Response:

We believe there is confusion because this customer has had two accounts with us. Two separate emails and credit cards were used. One account has not had any activity since October 2013 and the other has the charges he is requesting refunds for. On 5/1/2014 when calling our Customer Care department only the old information was provided so the representatives could only view the account with no recent activity. Eventually he provided the information used to create the more recent account and we were unable to see the recent charges. Per his request on 4/25/2014 we did in fact refunded two charges of $24.95. Six business days have passed since this refund was processed on our end. Occasionally, banks will take up to ten business days to process a refund. We recommend allowing more time for these refunds to process back to the credit card.

Wow, Very rude! Try to cancel this! Got hung up on twice. Would not email me confirmation it was canceled or would they give a confirmation number. SCAM!

This business didn't even have the basic information correct. I paid the nominal fee of $2.95 trying to get information on a death notice for an individual. Peoplefinders.com did not even have the correct birthday, last known mailing address or information that the person was deceased. I am fortunate that I did not subscribe to the service but $2.95 is too much to pay for nothing. This company needs to be investigated. How many people have paid the $2.95 for lacking and misinformation? How many have paid even more.

I signed up for a $.99 temp three day membership just to see how it worked. I made sure to cancel it within the 3 days. To my surprise I am now charged $2.95 to cancel?? I called and was told I could eliminate the $2.95 charge if I signed up for the monthly service of like $24.95?? I would not be charged the $2.95 until I cancelled that?? WTH Seems like theft to me?? Very unethical business practices!

Charges were made to my account that were not specified on the website or in any of the terms and conditions statements. BEWARE Also customer service was extremely rude, talking over customer, etc

Review: PeopleFinders advertises to give information and makes you put in a credit card number before you can receive your report. The report does *not* contain the information promised. This is a scam website that automatically enrolls you in a monthly billing cycle, which you find out after you've ordered your report. In short, they lie and commit fraud in order to make money off of people.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund of however much they end up charging my credit card, as well as the Revdex.com to reprimand them, seeing as how they've scammed 600 people - and that's only the ones who have complained on this site. I cannot believe they can get away with this. I will be telling everyone I know not to use them and letting them know that the Revdex.com takes no action against these money scams.

We have reviewed our files and found an order for a search was placed by this customer on 9/22/2014. The customer had the option to select a regular priced report at $1.95 or a discounted report plus free trial for $0.95. Nothing is pre-checked or pre-selected. On 9/22/2014 this customer affirmatively selected to enroll in the three day trial for $0.95. On the initial order selection page and subsequent payment information page it clearly and conspicuously states that unless the user cancels the service, it will continue to automatically renew at $24.95 per month. We received this customer's cancellation via their online account manager on that same day 9/22/2014. Therefore, they were not charged a membership fee.

We are sorry they did not receive the results you were hoping for. As advertised, the information on our reports is subject to availability. When a report is ordered, our system searches through billions of public records and collects every piece of relevant information. People Finders pays for access to this data, so the charge is for us to conduct a search on your behalf, not to return a specific result.

In conclusion the only charge on the account, the initial $0.95 cost of the report ordered, is non-refundable per the Terms of Use they agreed to upon purchase. Their account is closed and there will be no automatic billing.

We have reviewed our files and found an additional listing matching your information was submitted to our IT department for removal on 8/15/2014. We assume this is the listing you are referring to. Unfortunately, this request is still being processed. Please allow a few more business days for this to reflect online.

Review: I have attempted to work with PeopleFinders.com with no success. As a result, this is one, of many steps, that will be taken to protect myself and others' well-being as a result of their business practices.I have documented and archived a series of incidents to cite malicious and suspicious intent by PeopleFinders.com (http://www.peoplefinders.com/). I have a personal archive of emails to the company and site regarding their enablement of criminal activity, fraud, and identity theft dating back to 2013. I have adhered to the opt-out process that PeopleFinders.com outlined on their website; however, PeopleFinders.com continues to list my personal/contact information on the World Wide Web endangering the well-being of myself and my family. The questionable business practice today is posting address/contact information on static webpages via Search Engines which a consumer cannot remove via their opt-out protocol. [redacted]As I have a diverse IT background, the Webmaster is willingly refusing to remove my information from their database, static pages(s), WWW search engines, and notifying any affiliates they may have sold, leased, rented or given my information to, to do the same.Desired Settlement: 1. Per the Trouble Tickets, emails, and opt-out submissions sent to PeopleFinders.com, remove all of my information from their database, static pages(s), www search engines, and notify all affiliates they may have sold, leased, rented or given my information to, to do the same. 2. Stop willingly enabling criminal activity and promoting/supporting malicious business practices. 3. PeopleFinders sends an email to me, and a letter to my address on this complaint, stating understanding and compliance

Response:

Your Property Directory listing was submitted for removal on 7/30/2014. That same day the listing was manually removed by our IT department. It no longer appears on PeopleFinders.com. Unfortunately, we do not have the capability to remove links on [redacted], [redacted] or any other search engine. The information you are still seeing on these sites is probably from an indexed API feed. Overtime (days, weeks, months) the link will stop appearing, however, we do not have access to remove the link from other websites. We are only able to remove your profile information from our site.

Consumer

Response:

Due to the severity of this incident, the suspicious/malicious intent surrounding the occurrence, and the timeline to remedy the matter, all parties are being kept on copy so there are no surprises and nothing gets lost in translation.
