Review: completely inappropriate automatic membership with no email verification. the monthly membership of $24.95 - outrageous - was billed in within 3 days

I used their service and authorized a $1.94 service charge - when asked if I wanted a full membership for an addtional $19.95 I responded no. There was no clear indication that I would be automatically enrolled at $25.00 per month if I did not cancel within 3 days. They sent no further notice just billed me. They refuse to refund the money. completely inappropriate.Desired Settlement: just want the $24.95 back that they charged me on 6/5/13.

Consumer's Final Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

The terms described above were not at presented in a fashion that was clear as to the commitment or obligation. It had to have been extremely small print or footnoted - I would never have agreed to those terms if they were clearly presented. I would also think that some form of notification would have been received at the point they billed me - nothing. Very disceptive business practice! Very dissatisfied.

Business' Final Response

The customer has a choice to accept a special discounted price available with a monthly membership or the full price for the search without membership. If a customer does not wish to enroll in membership they may choose the full price for one report. The membership provides a three day trial to try our services. Our membership service provides unlimited searches and other features for a monthly fee. This is clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the initial order selection page. Then the consumer is provided with an entire page outlining the terms of the membership which clearly and conspicuously states that after the initial trial, unless the consumer cancels the service the service will continue monthly and the card they provided will be charged until they tell us to cancel their membership to avoid future charges. The membership is mentioned no less than three times on three pages before the order is complete.

Given that members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to avoid future charges. For the period of her membership the customer will be charged each month. During that time, our customer service is available to take the cancellation at any time.

[redacted] acted like he owned and ran the company and offered no solutions, to my situation, and he could not explain anything.Desired Settlement: For an (IT) manager or high ranking member of the company of technical knowledge to call me or reach out to me to bring resolution to my situation, it is pretty simple.Oh and for [redacted] to apologize for not trying to help in my situation.

At the time of purchase on 7/10/2014 you chose to receive a discounted price for signing up for a 3 day trial to our Membership. You had the option to cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone. We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee on the fourth day, and for every month thereafter.

You were billed the monthly membership fee of $24.95 on July 15th, August 15th and September 15th. Per your first request to our Customer Care department on 9/17/2014 we closed your account and granted one refund of $24.95, as a courtesy. The refunded amount was for the most current month of membership (September 15th).

You have stated over the phone and on this complaint that you have already contacted your bank or Credit Card Company and filed a dispute. Often, due to the dispute, you are given a conditional refund by your bank; therefore we cannot offer you any additional refunds.

In conclusion, we have issued one refund of $24.95 your account is closed and there will be no further automatic billing. If you have any questions regarding your [redacted] statements you will need to contact them directly.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because I feel that I've been duped into a erroneous 3-day trial period providing outdated info along with numerous other consumers as indicated on [redacted] which lists 19 pages of consumer complaints. It was my understanding that the 3-day trial would be a $1.95 "one time" payment. However, received the 1st bill in August for July charge of $24.95 and contacted Peoplefinders to dispute the charge but agreed to pay the $24.95 billed as I was advised by the rep that there would be NO further charges so I promptly paid the bill. In Sept. received a 2nd bill for $24.95 and contacted Peoplefinders to dispute the charges and spoke to rep [redacted] who advised me that a credit would issued for the full amount. Received the 3rd bill on October 10thfor $24.95 with a payment due date of November 10th, 2014 I then contacted Peoplefinders again to dispute the charges but was told that I had to contact my credit card company.

Business

Response:

We feel we have already addressed these concerns. Due to the Terms you agreed to and the dispute you mentioned through the card company, we are unable to provide any further refunds. Again, per your first contact with our Customer Care department on 9/17/2014 we closed your account and refunded the most current membership fee of $24.95 charged on 9/15/2014. We are not responsible for being aware of your credit card's billing cycle or when you review your statements.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I requested a one time search for my tenant and agreed to a one time charge for that service. I have been billed $ 24.95 for each of three months for $ 74.85 in total. Even at $ 24.95 the information I received was useless and out dated. The Revdex.com.ORG for Palm Springs Ca. claims its review of peoplefinders is being updated . I had no problem obtaining information regarding the exact same scam being perpetrated upon other people. [redacted], [redacted], [redacted] { 19 pages of complaints } to mention a few, almost all with a similar method of operation by the employees of PEOPLEFINDERS.COM. I will not pay these charges and I WILL NOT let it end here. A few of the PEOPLEFINDER.COM centers in California have already been closed and all again have very negative feedback.

Review: PEOPLE FINDERS USES DECEPTIVE AND CONFUSING BILLING PRACTICESDesired Settlement: I WOULD LIKE A REFUND OF $60 IN UNAUTHORIZED CHARGES TO MY CREDIT CARD

Business

Response:

At the time of purchase on 8/8/2014, this customer had a choice to accept a special discounted price available with a monthly membership ($19.95) or the full price for the search without membership ($39.95). The membership option provides a three day trial to try our services. Our membership service provides unlimited searches and other features for a monthly fee. This is clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the initial order selection page. On the next payment information page, the consumer is provided with an entire section directly below the total outlining the terms of the membership. This again clearly and conspicuously states that after the initial trial, unless the consumer cancels the service, it will continue monthly and the card they provided will be charged. This will continue until they tell us to cancel their membership to avoid future charges. The membership is mentioned no less than two times on two pages before the order is complete. Our records show this customer affirmatively selected to enroll on 8/8/2014. Given that members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to avoid future charges. For the period of the membership this customer was charged each month. During that time, our customer service is available to take the cancellation at any time. Per his online request on 11/6/2014, three months after the membership was initiated, we closed the account and issued a refund for the most current month of service at $29.95 as a one-time courtesy. There are no further refunds available.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: First, their own statements indicates that I was enrolled in a $19.95 a month program that renews automatically. So why did they charge my credit card $29.95 a month for three months. I never requested a membership for $29.95 a month. Therefore, they overcharged me $10.00 a month for 3 months. I am now requesting an additional refund for the $30.00 overcharge. I will be happy to provide copies of the $29.95 credit card overcharges upon request.Second, I would like to point out that they say the $19.95 gives members unlimited searches for each month. On at least four occasions during the three month period I was charged from $1.oo to $3.00 for each individual search. In other words they violated their own "free unlimited searches" policy by charging me for each individual search. I can provide copies of credit card charges for each of the four searches in question. I am now requesting an additional $10.00 reimbursement for the four searches in which I was charged a fee.The two instances I have outlined above indicate how Peoplefinders attempts to defraud their members. I thank Revdex.com for the promptness of their actions and I look forward to the additional $40.oo in refunds that they (Peoplefinders) has proven that they owe me by their own words!

Response:

Feel free to review the $19.95 product on PeopleFinders.com for the Terms you agreed to during checkout. As explained previously the discounted price for the report plus trial membership is $19.95. If the trial, which comes with the $19.95 report, is not cancelled within three days the membership fee of $29.95 will be charged on the fourth day and will continue monthly until the service is cancelled. Overdraft fees are something we do not control and do not provide reimbursement for.Our records show you have not been billed additionally for the searches you ran on this account. We have record of you logging in and accessing our database using many different criteria from 8/10/14 to as recently as 10/23/14. Again, there are no further refunds available per the Terms you agreed to.

Review: This business started charging our credit card last yr without our authorization. Neither my wife or I had even signed up for a free month of their service. They claimed my wife signed up for it. We disputed the charges and was made whole. They were actually brought onto a three-way call and said they wouldn't be charging our card any longer. My wife and I had our credit card # changed. Today, with a completely different credit card #, I was looking through the charges on the card and found that this company had again charged our card for $24.95. Please help! I feel like this company is defrauding people by attaining their credit card info. and then sneaking in this charge.Desired Settlement: They need to refund this money! And I would really appreciate it if they would stop charging me for something I do not want!

Review: On 3/10/15 I signed up for a "Report Only" search on the Peoplefinder web site for $1.95. I was a bit surprised to see I wis billed in 2 increments, $.97 and $.98 on the same day. I wasn't too concerned because the total was exactly $1.95. On 3/16/15 there was a new charge to my debit card of $24.95.I called PeopleFinders at [redacted] and spoke wih [redacted] (who stated he works for [redacted]).[redacted] told me I was signed up for a recurring charge and that he could not reverse the charge for $24.95. I went back to the website to make sure I selected the correct option. The option I selected for $1.95 does not mention a recurring charge. (the other option for $.95 does). As with many of the complaints I have read regarding this business (exactly the same as my complaint( they are clearly trying to trick customers into signing up for a recurring membership in order to charge $24.95 per month to customers who don't want their service. Kind Regards,[redacted].Desired Settlement: To resolve this matter I want the recurring charge of $24.95 reversed and credited to my debit card. I will pay the $1.95 charge I agreed to. I recommend that the Revdex.com take whatever action is possible against this company to prohibit them from fraudulent advertising and billing. The email address on my account is [redacted]

Response:

At the time of purchase you affirmatively selected to enroll into a 3 day trial to our Membership through a full-page offer directly after checkout. You had the option select yes or no to this post-transaction offer. You may cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone. We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee ($24.95) on the fourth day. We have found that you have already contacted your bank or Credit Card Company and filed a dispute. Often, due to the dispute, you are given a conditional refund by your bank; therefore we cannot offer you a refund. Please allow time for your financial institution to review the charges for validity. Usually this process will take a few billing cycles and they will notify you of the outcome via mail. You will now need to follow their policies and procedures regarding these charges.

Review: On July 4, 2014 I curiously went to Peoplefinders.com. The website offers FREE people finder information...you type in a name and you receive vague information about a person. The website then proceeds to offer you more detailed information about an individual as a "3 DAY TRIAL MEMBERSHIP" for THE PRICE OF $1.95. At that point you enter your credit card number. Following... it runs a query before your eyes...ending in 0 results. I selected a choice to pay a one time charge of $1.95 for contact information on July 4. I did not receive any other information in the report about the individual. On August 17 th I received my credit card statement and noticed that I was charged $19.95 for a 3 day trial which is $18.95 more than there advertised 3 day trial membership. Four days later, on July 8,2015, I was charged an ADDITIONAL amount of $ 29.95 and then on July 12, 2015 an ADDITIONAL $ 24.95 (a rewards charge) that I know nothing about...for a grand total of $74.84. I did not agree to a monthly billing plan... needless to say agree to $74.89 in charges in 12 days. These charges were not authorized by me. The terms were not clear on the website, a one- time charge of $1.95 turned into $74.89. I spoke with two very rude representatives. Representative number 1 was Emily. She did not have any of my contact information, when I asked her for it. I asked for a refund but was refused. I then asked for a confirmation email noting the cancellation of the membership and asked her to state my email address to confirm the cancellation. She gave me an incorrect email address. I then asked her how she was going to email me the confirmation of cancellation, when she did not have the correct email address and she became very aggressive and angry. I then asked to speak with a Supervisor...I was never connected, but instead DIAL TONED. After a lengthy query all I ever received was a name, age, and a list of 3 previous residences. That is a FREE service according to the website. What a scam!Desired Settlement: I want a refund to my account in the amount of $ 74.89. THIS WEBSITE IS A COMPLETE SCAM...and should be exposed to the public with all monies refunded to consumers. I am confident that this web company will be listed as " a class action suit" in the near future.

Response:

Public record information is not free on PeopleFinders.com. We offer a preliminary search prior to purchase which will indicate what information is available upon purchase for each listing. We offer this to ensure that you are fully aware of what information you will receive upon making a purchase. At the time of purchase you chose to receive a discounted price ($19.95) for signing up for a 3 day trial to our Membership. You had the option to cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone. We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, as stated on each page of checkout, you were charged the membership fee ($24.95) on the fourth day and for every month thereafter. The charges of $24.99 is for PeopleFinders Rewards program. This allows you to get discounts on the different reports offered on our website. This extra service is presented to our customers through a full-page offer directly after checkout. Users may either accept or decline the offer. Our records show you affirmatively selected to enroll in PeopleFinders Rewards by clicking "Yes, sign me up for PeopleFinders Rewards..." instead of declining the offer. We did not receive notification that you wished to cancel this within your 7 day trial period; Therefore, as stated next to the required checkbox clicked by you, you were billed $24.99 on the eight day and every month thereafter. Per your initial request on 8/19/2015, two months after the memberships were initialed, we cancelled the automatic renewal of your memberships. The charges are non-refundable per the Terms you agreed to. Your memberships will expire at the end of this 30 day period and you are free to enjoy all the benefits of the service until then.

Review: Today, 11/11/15, I noticed that I had a charge of $24.95 on my bank statement from Peoplefinder.com which posted yesterday. When I called to inquire, I was told that I had signed up through Classmates.com last month and had been charged $12.95, at that time. I do not recall actually completing a sign up for this service, however, I have now been charged twice for a service that I have not used. So, after being told that THEY NEVER ALLOW REFUNDS, I decided to look someone up. It gave me ONE address which was 50 years old (high school addres) and a phone number that had an extention which was changed at least 15 years ago in that town! This is a horrible service for triple the cost of good businesses like [redacted]!! I do want this posted so that others (who are smart enough to check the Revdex.com first) don't fall into their trap!Desired Settlement: I would like them to credit my checking account for the $12.95 and $24.95 that they have charged me from the time I was tricked into enrolling through Classmates.com.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because:Thank you for refunding me $24.95 I appreciate that. However, you took me for $12.45 through Classmares.com. I thought I had Xed out of it before a final acceptance, but that was not the case. In fact, I did not even use it because I did not know I had it. Please refund that amount, also. Thank you.

Business

Response:

We reviewed your account and found that an offer through Classmates.com was affirmitively selected on 10/10/2015. This special offer is discounted for the first month at $12.45 and renews monthly at $24.95. Pre this complaint, and as a onetime courtesy, we will grant one refund of $24.95. Please allow 2 to 5 business days for this to reflect on your account.

Business

Response:

We refunded the $12.45 on 11/23/15.

Review: I went on their site to see if I can locate my brother and step-son. I did not want the 19.99 special so I took the $2.48 special and I was given some information on my step-son and I also saw his wife's 1st name which I clicked on for addl info.It asked if I wanted to use the same card and I said yes to the same 2.48 promo. They charged me 19.99. It never showed me 19.99 or I would not have done it. I called and the rep said it's been charged and no refund. I asked for her Supv [redacted] who was not one ounce of courtesy and she did not like that I asked for her Supv name and told me to have a good day and hung up. I am demanding my 19.99 back as the link was fraud.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund back to my account. As for the supv, if that is the best they can hire, then it does not speak well for this company. I am retired 35 years customer service, som companies just hire anyone to answer a phone.

In this case about 3 minutes after the customer made their purchase for the people search, they then upgraded to a full background on [redacted] Yearwood for $19.95. The people search they ran was for a [redacted]. They had to click on or type in a different name to get the new product on [redacted]. The service was rendered, per Terms of Use the product is not refundable.

Review: I want my $24.97 refunded.

I ordered a report for $0.99. They charge extra to email the report, so in total, I was charged $1.94. I checked my email for the report and my receipt. I received that receipt and only to find another receipt for $24.97. I didn't order anything extra. I don't know what happened. When I asked for a refund, they said that they don't do refunds. I didn't order any $24 report, so I should get my money back.Desired Settlement: I only want my $24.97 refunded.

Business

Business' Initial Response

We received your request over the phone on 8/9/2013 and issued a refund for $24.97. This amount should be shown on your credit card statement about five business days after the refund was processed on 8/9/2013.

Consumer's Final Response

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)

Review: PeopleFinders.com refuse to remove my address from the internet. I spoke to 8 different agents and 1 supervisor (within 4 weeks) who all assured me, after 72 hours my address will be taking down from the internet. The company has an opt out option in which I submitted 4 times and my address is still on the internet. There are several complaints on the Revdex.com website for this same problem. I did not authorize this company to display my address on the internet and they refuse to take it down. I explained to a supervisor that in my line of work it is a safety issue. I was told by a supervisor that it was not a good enough reason for them to have to take it down. The supervisor then agreed to take it down within 72 hours. That was 3 weeks ago.Desired Settlement: I am requested to have my address removed from the internet. In addition, remove my name completely from that company's database and affiliates.

Business

Response:

We have reviewed our files and found that this listing was reported to our IT department for removal. Today, however, we see that the information still appears. We have contacted that department today in order to expedite this removal. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the delay.

Business

Response:

Our records show you were refunded $24.95 per your request over the phone today (10/13/2014).

Review: I was looking for public records on myself and my husband that I know for a fact exists, and my curiosity led to me to search more thoroughly on the internet to be sure there is nothing surprising on either of our records. From the Google search this service kept popping up so I took the bait and clicked on it. To my amazement it was so easy to find my name and my husband's with what appeared to be very accurate information! They had a "best" deal offer to sign up for membership (which is required to see any of the records) for $4.95/month which is what I chose. After setting up an account my credit card notified me that a charge for $29.85 had been processed. That caught me off guard, because I was signing up for $4.95/month, right?

I contemplated whether or not to access the account, but with some reluctance I did a search, no results. I did several other searches, and incredibly NO RECORDS were found for ANY of the searches I did, it didn't matter how many names I typed in or how many addresses, etc. I called to request a refund of the fraudulent service and a female responded that she would cancel the rest of the membership but that it was non-refundable. I explained that I know for certain we have reports listed for our names and her response (and ONLY response repeatedly) is that the results are not guaranteed.

I called my credit card company to dispute the charge which was a SCAM and unbelievably when they called this company to discuss a refund SHE was the one who answered the phone. We were unsuccessful, of course, and we asked for a supervisor, but conveniently we were sent to a voice mail. Out of all of the employees with this company she was the one who answered both phone calls on the same morning to a toll-free number. What a coincidence!Desired Settlement: A reasonable refund for the amount of purchase ($29.85) since there was no result for what I paid and lack of customer service or cooperation. If not total amount, at least refund the other 5 months and 29 days of the advertised price of $4.95/month that I am not going to be able to use, yet already paid.

Business

Response:

We do not change the records we have on file after a customer signs up for a membership or purchases a product. Service was rendered. As a courtesy we have refunded half of the price. A refund of $14.92 was issued to the customer.

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

Review: Ad claimed that background records on people that I searched for would be provided for free / links through to a different site misrepresented itself.

On 5/13/13 I saw an ad claiming to be called freecriminalsearches.com that only links through to a membership site called peoplefinders.com. I purchased a report from them anyway and agreed to a 3 day trial to their membership (since it claimed to be a free trial). The report was very lacking in what it promised. Ads strongly suggested that the report I would receive would include misdemeanor records but all I got were a list of previous addresses and names of relatives.

I am complaining mostly because of the very false and misleading claims on what I'd receive but another serious fault of this company is that the link that available on the first day of the trial to cancel your account is no longer there. The FAQs gives instructions on how to cancel your account but the links are just not there anymore. This company outright lies to its customers, does all kinds of bait and switch schemes and is very fraudulent.

I have proof positive that what used to be a simple link to request to cancel your account is no longer there and now I have to call them. I do not want to talk to them. I'm guessing I would get a big runaround, have to listen to more ads or something, or be forced to deal with them selling out my phone number to other companies.

Peoplefinders.com is horrible, awful do not do business with them.Desired Settlement: $1.95 for the initial report that I paid for that failed to provide information that the ad claimed would provide.

Review: This is to inform you that I am not and never have been a member of your organization. I only used your service on 4/30/2013 for the amount of $0.95, which I paid. For some reason you enlisted me in your annual service, that I never agreed to. You continue to charge my [redacted] account ending in [redacted] for an unauthorized charge for $24.95 per month. I will continue to contest these charges, and if you continue, I will notify the proper legal authorities. I have notified [redacted] not to authorize these charges, and they have agreed not to authorize them.Desired Settlement: Please remove my name from your membership, and stop charging my Visa account.

Business' Initial Response

At the time of purchase on 4/30/2013 you chose to receive a discounted price for signing up for a 3 day free trial to our 3-in-1 Membership.

You had the option to cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone.

We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were billed $24.95 on the fourth day, and for every month thereafter.

Per your written requests via phone, email and mail we have granted eight refunds of $24.95 each. This means the only charge you are still responsible for is the initial trial membership price of $0.95. Please allow 2-5 business days for the refunds to process back into your credit or debit card.

We have also closed your account.

Review: I purchased a single service fee of $ 0.95. But I got sign up monthly membership. Like me there are about 600 similar complaints

I did a single query for a fee of $0.95. A couple of moths later I have two $25.95 membership charges. I called the company and they told me I got singed automatically to a non-refundable membership. I am very careful about online transaction and at no point there was anything saying I was signing up for a membership. Neither I received an email saying I was doing so. Nor anything saying I had a logging for service of which I could have taken advantage.

This is a dishonest bait fishing run company, with about 600 similar complaints with the Revdex.com, most of them describing that it is not clear at any point of the transaction that a customer is signing on for a membership.

The company uses single fee transactions as baits to sign customer unwittingly to a membership. Because the customer does not know it has sign up for a membership it can not use or take benefit of the services.

The high number of complaints speaks as evidence it self. The Revdex.com should start a deeper investigation and request peoplefinder.com to have a fair refund system for people who did not know they were signing up for a membership and therefore did not and could not use their services for the periods charged.

In my case, I was very careful. Still, I got charged for a membership service which at not point I knew I was signing up for. With no emails, statement or receipts, there was not way for me to know I had a membership and therefore I could not only not cancelled but neither could I have been able to take advantage of it or benefit from it.

Desired Settlement: From the high number of similar complaint is evident that is not clear that customers are signing up for a membership.

The company should:

1) Change their website to minimize confusion and make sure that the customer understand what product are they singing up for.

2) Have in place a fair refund system for customers who did not know they were signing up for a membership and therefore did not used or logged in after the single fee service transaction.

I think just having number 2) in place would make a Better Business for everyone.

A fair refund system should be in place in any honest running company. That is a minimum that the Revdex.com should request.

Initial Business Response

For the period of the membership the customer will be charged each month. During that time, our customer service is available to take the cancellation at any time.

Our records show on 9/4/2013 the membership was cancelled per a request via phone to our Customer Care department. There were no refunds requested at that time. Later that same day, there was another call made using a three way with a bank representative. During this second call Mr. [redacted] requested a refund. We agreed to refund the August membership fee of $24.95 as a onetime courtesy. The account is closed and there will be no further automatic billing.

Final Consumer Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

I did not had a choice to choose a full price. I did not see, even once, that I was signing for a membership.

I did request a refund for both months charged the first time I called and was declined. I only received one month refund as a onetime courtesy when my credit card company called Peoplefinder.com on my behalf, after I initiated a dispute of the charges.

There are more than 600 complaints at the Revdex.com, most of them similar to mine stating it is not clear that the customer is signing up for a monthly membership. Because the customer does not know he is doing so it can not use the service or cancel at anytime.

A good business company should have a fair refund system for these cases.

The Revdex.com should look into this company's complaints and request to have a fair refund system for customers who unwittingly were sign up for a membership and there is proof they did not used the service at any point during the periods charged. That would make it a better business for everyone.

At the time of purchase on 2/11/2013 you chose to receive a discounted price for your report by signing up for a 3 day free trial to our 3-in-1 Membership. This membership allowed you to receive an unlimited number of:

*People Searches - Get the facts you need to find anyone, anywhere

*Email Searches - Obtain email addresses, or learn about the owner of any address

*Social Profile Searches - See updates on all of your friend's social profiles in one spot

*Marriage Searches - Find out if a man or woman has ever been married

*Divorce Searches - Check the divorce status of any man or woman

*Property Searches - Learn about any piece of property, including the current owner and value

The membership is mentioned no less than 3 times on each page of checkout. There is also a full page disclosure explaining the membership coverage and renewal.

You had the option to cancel this membership trial at anytime via your account manager on the website, via email, or via phone.

We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were billed $24.95 on the fourth day, and for every month thereafter.

The charge for $24.99 is for PeopleFinders Rewards program. This allows you to get discounts on the different reports offered on our website. We did not receive notification that you wished to cancel this within your 7 day trial period, therefore you were billed $24.99. You enrolled in this separate membership through a full-page offer after your purchase. On this page you may either click "yes, sign me up" or "no, do not sign me up." The sign up option was affirmatively selected by you after your order on 2/22/2013.

We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel your memberships. Rather, seven months after you started the membership, the charges were disputed through your credit card company, which resulted in the termination of your membership. You will need to follow your card company's policies and procedures regarding the dispute. The charges are non-refundable per the terms you agreed to.

Review: I have used people finders for several years and am aware that you have to carefully read at check out or else you may sign up to be automatically billed for a membership. I recently checked my credit card statement and have been billed for a membership in the months since my last peoplefinders.com purchase. I emailed them asking for a refund and was denied. I asked them to provide me with the confirmation email I received for my purchase and have not received it. I did not consent to a monthly membership and distinctly remember reading carefully at my last purchase to avoid doing so.Desired Settlement: Refund of amounts charged to my credit card with the exception off purchase.

Business

Response:

We have reviewed your account and found that in the past you have chosen the $1.95 normal priced reports. However, on 2/6/2014 our records show you selected a discounted price of $0.95 (billed as $0.48 and 0.47). You may review your billing statement for this date and see the charge we are referring to. The reason that product was discounted is because it is packaged with a three day Trial Membership. On 2/6/2014 you affirmatively selected to enroll by choosing the discounted People Search Report plus three day Trial Membership instead of the regular priced People Search Report. Our membership service provides unlimited searches and other features for a monthly fee. This is clearly and conspicuously disclosed on the initial order selection page. Then the consumer is provided with an entire section, directly below the total, outlining the terms of the membership. Again it states that after the initial trial, unless the consumer cancels the service it will continue monthly and the card they provided will be charged until they tell us to cancel their membership to avoid future charges. The membership is mentioned no less than two times on two pages before the order is complete.

Given that members can conduct unlimited searches for a monthly membership fee our terms do not allow for any refunds and simply allow members to cancel anytime to avoid future charges. For the period of your membership you were charged each month. During that time, our customer service was available to take your cancellation at any time. You failed to contact us to cancel until an email was received on 6/3/2014, four months after the membership had been initiated. Per this request, and as a onetime courtesy, we will grant the refund of $24.95 for the most current month of membership. In conclusion, you have received credit for one month of service totaling $24.95, your account is closed and there will be no further automatic billing.

Review: I was shocked to see that Peoplefinders debited my bank account for a service I did not subscribe to or use. I was told I used a three day trial offer which I did do but with an other company. . They claimed they emailed me a notification of membership but I have no record of such an email in my email account. They further claimed the I did receive a refund and cancellation but in doing so was not treated respectfully as I told the individual I never used this serviceDesired Settlement: Just want my money back and an apology.

Per your request over the phone on 8/16/2014, and as a onetime courtesy, we have granted one refund for the most current month of membership. This should appear on your statement in 2-5 business days.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I used a different company for the one search I did. I don't know how this company got my info but if I was aware of a three day period to do unlimited searches I would have and then cancelled. I also contend that the representative who talked to me was in error when she said the disclaimer of automatic membership was posted "all over" their web site. They have refunded my money and I thank them for that but I do not appreciate a company that uses this tactic to gain financial gain. They should be upfront with people on this and not hide it in subtext and fine print. There are too many companies that do this. Let it stand, they need to be more transparent in their dealings with the public for the sake of better business. Again, I am puzzled as to how they got me signed up when I didn't even visit their web page.

Business

Response:

We want to make sure you are aware that PeopleFinders.com is purely a self-service website. Nothing is pre-selected or pre-checked. Our records show that on 7/29/2014 you visited PeopleFinders.com, selected a product, entered registration and billing information, checked a box stating you have read and agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy, proceeded through checkout and placed an order. The automatic renewal is disclosed in standard text directly above the pricing selections and on every page of checkout. When shopping online it is the consumer's responsibility to read and understand what is presented. You are free to review our Terms, the products on PeopleFinders.com and how they are advertised at any time. As the refund was a one time exception to the Terms you agreed to, understand you will not be eligible for any refunds in the future.

Review: The website offered their service for .99 - I was using it to look for classmates for our upcoming 30th class reunion. The information we were given was not correct - I even pulled my family so I called and cancelled the same day. They billed me for that full month (August) and then for September. My wife called and spoke with a Chris who agreed to credit back the September charge but then she called again after looking into it further and the lady she spoke with was completely rude. They have the monthly payments set up to come out through Paypal and that shows that it does not begin until September. I want the August charges reversed as well and their business practice investigated. It looks like bait & switch - Im sure they have taken advantage of many people. Their advertising is incorrect and they do not provide correct information - they are a scam.Desired Settlement: I want my account refunded.I also believe that a notice should be mandated on their website that the initial charge of .99 is not what will be taken from their account even if they cancel the same day.
