Synchrony Bank (Formerly GE Capital Retail Bank) Reviews (993)

This bank closes accounts without warning Weather or not your credit is good with themI have never missed payments and paid my cards off early, yet they have closed my accounts It makes me feel like I am trash Who needs this I have concerns their closing will cause negative impact on my credit report I am closing all other retailers cards who use synchrony back and will only use cards who appreciate my business

I found their billing confusing and difficult to figure out what the total bill was It seems to me they want to fool you into thinking you've paid it all, and you accrue late fees Reaching a person is difficult Once you get through the first layer of computer prompts you need to say "Customer Representative" three times- that gets you a person However, all times I reached a person, I was not very happy with their service First person did not speak English sufficiently enough to be doing this, so although I made a payment, I still got a late fee- I still don't understand that one Second person I spoke to, English was fine, but she couldn't fix the problem for me, and I had to almost yell at her to move me to a higher level, who sounded like they were from America Last call, again, to some center outside the US, I could hear him, he couldn't hear me I have never had an experience with any other credit card company like this one

Worst customer support everAdditionally, the bank's algorithm to determine creditworthiness seems to be badly brokenI got an email from Syncrony Bank informing me that my credit line on my Sam's Club MasterCard was being lowered from $to $This was curious to me, as I don't have a MasterCard, I have a DiscoverWas I ever in for a surpriseI made my last purchase in August, for about $at Sam'sForgot all about itNo problem though, I get bills electronicallyChecked my account in early SeptemberBalance due $Still goodAt the end of September, I got an ominous looking letter from Syncrony Bank regarding my MastercardStrange, since I don't have oneApparently, GE Capital spun off Syncrony (clearly their less-desirable component)I panicked, thinking there was an identify theft event afootWhat I found was a note telling me that my credit line had been reduced as aboveThe reasons were: â Number of times the account balance was paid in full over the last months was too lowâ ; â Low ratio of payment to current balance over the last months for this accountâ ; â Low ratio of payments to balance over the last months for this accountâ ; â This account was past due at last billingâ My balance was paid in full (in months where I had a balance) for at least consecutive YEARSAugust was the first month in the last months where I even HAD a balanceâ And I never received a bill for my Discover cardI have never received or activated the MasterCard I never requestedThe key here is notificationThe bank is required to notify me of material changes to my accountA sane person would have to think switching cards from Discover (which I only had one of) to MasterCard (which I have enough of that I donâ t need another) would qualifyWhen I went to www.samsclubdiscover.com (yes, itâ s still called that), I saw the reduced balance, and the late payment (for $charge against a $balance for heavenâ s sake!), I called the number on my letter immediatelyI explained to the first person I talked to that I was upset about the loss of credit (this has great potential to hurt my credit score)Of course, although pleasant, he know virtually nothingHe agreed with me and removed the late charge, but said he couldnâ t do anything about the credit line reductionHe transferred me to an account manager named *** [redacted] was terribleHe told me the decision was based upon information obtained from a credit reporting agencyI assured him he must be mistakenMy credit scores are a couple of points below He told me that if my credit improved, Syncrony would periodically review my information, and may consider raising my limit in the futureThanks for that, ***Iâ m sure Syncrony has the conversation recordedListen to the recording folks [redacted] basically called someone with an credit score a liarAfter the call, I check all three reportsThey were the same as the previous month - perfect, with no negative factorsNOT A SINGLE ONEThere was only on differenceOne company had lowered my credit line â Syncrony***â s crass assertion that â the information was obtained from credit reporting agenciesâ was patently falseThe reasons provided in the letter pertained only to Syncrony account (which I never knew I had)Iâ m insulted and embarrassed by thisBTW - on the Syncrony website, before I access my account information, Iâ m invited to â activate my MasterCardâ WHAT MASTERCARD? I NEVER RECEIVED ONE!! NOR DID I RECEIVE NOTICE THAT I WOULD EVER RECEIVE ONE! I didnâ t activate the cardI wonâ t until this is cleared upI wonâ t cancel this card thoughIâ ve had this account for or yearsRemoving it would lower my average account age, and reduce my credit scoreAs much as I despise them, Iâ ll keep itHereâ s the bad news (for them) - I wonâ t shop at Samâ s again - everNicely done, folks! Itâ s probably worth mentioning at this point that Iâ m and engineer at a company which specializes in â big dataâ and analytics of sameI donâ t owe you this, but Iâ ll do you a favorYouâ re algorithm (or whatever Frankenstein-mechanism youâ re using) is brokenIâ ll even tell you where - when you switched from Discover to MasterCard, you failed to consider the existing payment historyThat explains all the conditions you used to mistreat me, and I canâ t imagine how many othersI wish youâ d fix this, but as bad as [redacted] was, and as bad as your recent online reviews are (including those on this site), my expectations arenâ t highSyncrony can fix thisI'll share my credit reports with them if that would helpAgain, my expectations are not high

I find synchrony's rates usuryThey tried to charge me charge me $extra on a $bill! for late payments! I tried to speak to them and they reduced it $This is not acceptable business practice as far as I am concerned

I am extremely annoyed with Synchrony Bank through PC RichardsPhone calls started about a month ago stating I was late on my paymentI was late because I couldn't access my bill on lineI informed the caller to please send me a paper copy and I'd happily update my accountI never received a paper copy, but multiple daily calls continuedWhen I answered the phone I had automated teller , I entered my zip code , it wasn't acceptedThe line would dropExtremely frustrated, this morning I waited for a person who could not deviate off his script, it was though you were talking to a robot! I also had a difficult time understanding what he was sayingI asked to speak to the manager and asked where they were calling fromThe caller said, "INDIA" that to me is CRAZY! I paid entire bill and will try my best to NEVER have any dealings with SYNCHRONY BANK again!!!!!!!

Do NOT trust their credit cards On many purchases they will give you a "deferred interest" period However, if you make more than one purchase (as on my Care Credit account with them), they will not tell you, and it is not recorded on their website, the amount of each of your payments that is going to the different charges So you are absolutely in the dark about when your "deferred payment period" is going to end And if it does end, you wind up with an interest of more than 25% of your ORIGINAL charged amount DO NOT trust their minimum payment to get you paid off in time! I added up what my required payments were on my La-Z-Boy purchases and would have gotten everything paid off well in advance of the final date, except that I wasn't told how much was going to the first purchase and how much to the second So I ended up with an enormous interest charge this month It doesn't help that you get months on one charge, months on another, etc That's just a way to confuse you DO NOT let your companies (such as the dentist or vet) let it charge as "Equal Pay/Deferred Interest" They didn't tell me that they were doing that! Then Synchrony sets you up with a minimum payment that is going on those charges only and isn't going to the simple "deferred interest" charges And that isn't ANYWHERE on their website and isn't on the paperwork you sign when you charge the amount On the whole, they are as trickily deceitful as they can be without being illegal And if you try to contact them, good luck! You will spend at least minutes listening to their machine before you even get the option of talking to someone And then you will wait even longer

Poor customer service They will not talk to me unless I provide the passcode left on my voice mail The voice mail was unitelligible and I could make out only about words I could not make out the passcode due to a mumbling rep with a heavy accent I requested they resend the message to my home phone and they will not I am denied total access relating to my account I went to another bank and got another credit card I'm afraid what would happen if I actually had money on deposit with them

My Chase BP credit card became a Synchrony Bank card I was informed today that my APR increased from 12.24% to 26.99% I can't even image using a card with that APR No reason given Customer service completely clueless - some nonsense about no real impact This company is just trying to steal from people who can't afford to pay their balance off monthly Terrible bank!!

Agreeing to finance a purchase via a GE - Synchrony loan was one of my worst decisionsCalling in to the automated system is a real pain every month - the system takes a minimum of 15-minutes every month to make a paymentIf I don't use the automated system, I have to pay a $fee for the customer service representative - just to make a paymentThe customer service agents are very good - but the automated system is making me very angryWhen I get this account paid off, I intend to never use this bank againI do not recommend anyone agree to financing via Synchrony Bank

I have a Kawasaki motorcycle loan with GE company and have been on time and currentI asked for a payment extension due to a financial difficulty I was experiencingI went thru the process of speaking with different agents regarding my situationFinally, was approved and was sent paperwork to sign and send back to them which I didThey finally received the paperwork and I was told I was disqualified because I put an invalid date on the paperworkThen I was then told I was not approved because I did not make the payment in timeI went ahead and made the payment with funds that I really didn't have just to be "re-approved"That ended up being a lie on their part because they really did not re approve me for the payment extensionNothing but lies and poor customer service from this Synchrony Bank companyI am very dissatisfied with how I have been treated during these difficult times

I am an active duty sevice member and have discovered the Servicemembers Civil Relief ActIn discovering this act, I have written each of my credit card companies about it and have recieved responses from all of themEvery single one has gone above and beyond and lowered my interest rates, refunded interest rates from the past and in the case of Capital One, done all of this with cancled cardsAll but Synchrony bankThey Basicall sent me letters saying that they cannot do anything since my accounts were after I was active dutyThis is true, BUT, the new act states that this applies to accounts Before and During active duty serviceSynchrony sticks with the old act that applies beforeDo Not try to fight itThey are greedy and will keep referancing the old actKudos to Capital one and BarclaycardUsThey went above and beyond for me and I will continue to do business with themAnything Synchrony related will be canceled

As others have said, be very vigilant about how your money is allottedWe have a Care Credit account and since Synchrony took over, I have called to make sure I was paying promotional balances off properlyDid not happenGiven wrong dollar amounts and then they don't tell you that you have't paid enoughAt 27% interestpredatory lending and bait and switchI can't pay this last card off fast enough to be done with them The sad part is that we had ZERO say in this because GE/Capital sold it to them They are rude and condescending on the phone and not helpful in the least HORRID HORRID company

I recently went with a friend to an HHGREG store as I was in need of new appliances to update my kitchenAfter looking around and negotiating a deal with the sales clerk he said I could get an additional 10% off if I took a store credit cardI reluctantly agreed since I don't like the idea of store credit cardsMy only exception had been The Home Depot Card The dollar amount of the purchase would have been in the neighborhood of $My credit score at the time was The card was deniedI moved on and purchased all the same items at the Home Depot and at a better final priceAnd by the wayI charged them on my HD Card A couple of weeks later I received the letter from synchrony bank explaining their reason for denying my creditOK this is the reason I posted this commentthey said I am deceased I was so concerned that I went to the Social Security Death Records to see if I had indeed diedNopestill alive

About five months ago, I financed a new HVAC unit through Synchrony FinancialWhere to begin 1) They didn't send me a bill in February, but sent me a bill for both February and March with a late fee 2) Although minimum payments were promised at $150/mo, they raised my minimum payment by $WITHOUT POSTING IT TO MY BILL, pinged me for a late charge for the amount, and sent debt collectors after me within days of cashing my check (on time) It's simpleGive me an accurate billing statement, I'll write you your check 3) On top of their business practices being generally shady, they should not have been able to adjust my minimum payment or APR within just a few months of signing for the loan(That's not legal.) I just happily paid $for an appraisal for a Home Equity loan through my personal bank so I can pay off my loan through Synchrony in full and I don't have to deal with this company's shady business practices ever againCan't wait

Once you get a little behind watch out because here comes the part where Syncrony takes you credit score and puts it even lower for you Finally getting caught up after some bad times within my family, so once your score is dropped, they lower your credit limit to just above what you account balance is, hence making the gap between account balance and available credit roughly nothing, so it looks like you maxed those cards out even though you didn'tThis makes the portion of balance to credit limit to high which lowers you scoreSeems a bit back handed and very dirty!! So long story short, I will no longer do business with these peopleAnd good luck trying to contact anybody that can understand you or what your going throughNo paymeny plans, no soul, no care!!

This is racket practiceTheir promotional expiration comes without notice and then retroactive interest changes of nearly 30% wipes out whatever payment that one has had madeThe experience of just being shafted by this robbery called credit has been extremely eye opener, and I make sure the social media picks up on this This bank or financial institution should be looked at under RICO statutes

Their customer service is awful! They have an automated system first which takes at least minutes to get through, then you have to not answer any questions or keep mashing zero just to speak to an actual personThe reason I called is because I couldn't sign into my account, so I used the forgot password option on the websiteI received an error saying my account was not available for online accessWhen I finally was able to talk to someone they said I had to wait two hours then call back againSo I did My second call was just as unsuccessful as the firstThey cannot send you a password reset email as "their system does not have that function or capability." Their recommendation again was to try back in two hours To not have the ability to reset a users password from the administrative side is totally unacceptable in 2015! If you are offered a line of credit from a retailer using a Synchrony Bank (GE Capital) credit card, think long and hard as they are the worst credit card company I have ever dealt with! Their customer service is abysmal, their online portal is horrendous as I was also unsuccessful when I first set my account to make automatic paymentsI will not be doing business with them again nor will I ever recommend a friend to their credit cards

I had no idea who was calling eight times a dayThought it was a scamFinally they left a vague message about an account I never heard of and to which I responded To cut to the chase,,I purchased hearing aids through EPIC and was offered month financing interest- free through what I now know was SYNCHRONYI made my first payment in June, twice the minimumSecond payment in July, the sameThe call was to inform me I owed both July payment (which I had made) and August, for which I had received the bill four days agoI refused to authorize any payment online until I had checked my checking account records, which seemed to surprise themI did check and my July payment had cleared on July Today is Sunday, so I will have to wait until tomorrow to notify them and hope this is the end of it This is an extension of my previous complaintI have discovered that I WAS LIED TO WHEN I AGREED TO THIS CHARGEI asked specifically , "If this is not paid in twelve months, then does it revert to regular interest charged on the balance?" The answer was YES What they did not disclose was that there is something called "deferred interest"..in other words, you have to pay interest on the amount you have already paid in the previous twelve monthsTHIS WAS NOT DISCLOSED

Horrible service, Customer service is in India made a large payment to pay off my account and was quoted different days before it would be available been waiting to buy a new bed and still waiting after weeks and keep getting people in India that do not offer any assistance and are not willing to help what the hell is going on with this bank they are a joke they will quickly take your money but treat you like dirt Beware! Not only would I Not reccomend I wouldn't wish this bank on my worst enemy forgot about it!

This last month September I made a payment of $only instead of the $fee because I'm taking care of my elderly mother who has had a series of strokesI am on SSI disabilityI'm the only one helping her with her bills but also we needed to eatWell since GE Capital Retail Bank changed over to Synchrony our phone has rung incessantly, even over the weekendI answered one time, followed the instructions to speak to a customer agent and then was hung up on Please stop calling our house! I will be making the $payment and late fees on October 1st when my check comes!
