We did not receive any notification that you wished to cancel this trial. The 3 day trial has ended; therefore, you were charged the membership fee on the fourth day, and for every month thereafter. Per this complaint, and as a onetime courtesy, we will grant one refund of $24.95 for the most current month of membership. Please allow 2-5 business days for the refund to process back into your credit or debit card. There are no further refunds available per the Terms you agreed to. We have also cancelled your membership.

We are unable to find the account using both the email addresses you provided. Do you remember what email address was used on the account that Customer Care found for you? Also please provide the exact First name and Last name you typed in when creating the account.

I am rejecting this response because:Your website specifically stated that the person's current address was available. It is the ONLY reason I decided to pay the fee to see it. If it had said "last known address" I would not have paid to see it.

Review: I used this service one time, based on their advertisement that you could cancel without charge within a specified period of time. I was not impressed by what they provided and requested cancelation immediately (May 2015). I have now become aware that my "subscription" was never terminated, and that they have been charging my credit card $24.95 per month since last May. I have not utilized this company at all after the initial "trial".

When I called to get this rectified I was told that they would cancel my subscription effective today, but they would do nothing about the months of erroneous charges.

This company utilizes extremely questionable business practices. They are a sham!Desired Settlement: I would like the unauthorized charges refunded.

Business

Response:

The customer did not cancel until 04/14/15 when a call was placed to our office. At any time the customer could have also logged into has account or sent a email to cancelation. Per our Terms of Use that the customer agreed to at time of purchase no refunds will be issued.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I was never aware that I had an active account. I indicated that I did not want an account at the one time that I tried their service. I have never used the account, and never believed that I had ever agreed to an account. It was not until now that we noticed the monthly charge on our credit card. It is quite clear, from the number of consumer complaints against this company, that they engage in questionable business practices designed to take advantage of people like myself. It is totally illogical that I, or anyone else, would maintain an account, at a cost of $25/month, that they NEVER used. Their assertion that I Did not request termination of the account until today is totally fallacious. I indicated, on the phone, that I did not want the account established in May of 2015.

Business

Response:

We have a self service website, It was the customer's responsibility to cancel his account which was not done until 04/14/16.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I did cancel immediately. They refuse to acknowledge that I did so. You can readily see that they have numerous similar complaints.

Review: I unsubscribed and canceled my monthly membership and was STILL charged. I refuse to be bullied from a company who advertises a low cost and then slaps people in the face with a high monthly bill for a service that most don't use monthly.

This is a too common practice with online companies and it needs to STOP!Desired Settlement: I want to be refunded on EVERYTHING for my inconvenience and times.

Business

Response:

The customer did not cancel the People Search membership before being charged on 04/21 for $24.95. As a courtesy we will only refund the $24.95 charge.

This company is a scam. Even though I specifically chose a one-time payment option to look for someone's phone number I was charged $25.00. I've been fighting to get it removed from my credit card -- to no avail.

KEEP AWAY THIS IS A HORRIBLE SERVICE (the only phone number they provided was from 10 years old).

I joined only for 3 days and it was suppose to be free, yet my credit card was charged $29.89. I called customer service and they were going to deduct it from my credit card. Well, not only did they not deduct the charges but the following month I was charged $24.99. I will be calling the Revdex.com and cancelling my credit card. Very unhappy with this company!

Review: I would NEVER recommend Peoplefinders to a friend.

I would NEVER recommend Peoplefinders to a friend.

I tried their introductory lookup service for 48 cents and cancelled within three days and was hit with an unexpected $2.95 charge to cancel. I cancelled because if you don't, Peoplefinders will automatically charge your card a sizable monthly fee indefinitely until cancelled.

With so many online providers of reverse-phone-lookups I am most unfortunate to have tried out: Peoplefinders.com [redacted]

Judging by the extensive complaints about Peoplefinders I am not alone in my BAD experience with Peoplefinders.

It was my experience and opinion that the Terms and Conditions of the hidden fees were not displayed on the login screen while registering and/or were confusing.

I suspect they know EXACTLY what they are doing. Bait the ignorant user with services and then trap them into paying for a "service" or levy a cancellation fee, or discretely apply an ongoing charge if the service is not cancelled.

I called "customer service" and the lady was in my opinion well-rehearsed at deflecting the billing policy! She implied there was no issue because she said "You are the one who selected [the trial plan]. So I did try to resolve my exposure to this perceived unfair and slimy billing practice over the phone with Peoplefinders. Sorry she said there was no issue and nothing she could do.

In my opinion they are sneaky, unscrupulous, preying on individuals who come to them for a service, often in haste, and in my opinion should be avoided at all costs.

My time is worth well more than $2.95 and $.048, but I am investing time so that other may:

AVOID Peoplefinders.com

In my opinion their services and billing business model is a SCAM to lock in unsuspecting or technically-ignorant customers and then bill them to escape.Desired Settlement: Refund of all fees charged.

$2.95 and $0.48 for a total of $3.43

Business

Response:

It clearly stats on the purchase page the cost of the trial membership and that there will be a cancelation fee. No refund will be issued.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: the terms may have been in the fine print, but in my observation and as other have written, it is seemingly an obvious peoplefinders business tactic to tease the user then rope them into a contract (either an exit contract or entrant contract for continued service). As far as the statement about "clearly" stating, this is nonsense. Why else would so many others have so many complaints registered with peoplefinders. I feel cheated. I feel swindled. Also, when a company squabbles over a miniscule amount of money over customer satisfaction, then it is again abviously a part of their business model as how they generate revenue. Common sense should prevail with an honest company, peoplefinders seems to not be one of those companies. They know a user stays on a webpage about 8 seconds - 20 seconds. They have done this many times before and are in my opinion preying on the consumer. Imagine if the next time in a [redacted] they have a sale on a side salad for only 1 penny more* with any purchase. What a great deal!!! It's fair. Then after your kid eats lunch you get a credit card statement for $44 from [redacted]. When you inquire they tell you that you should have seen the legend for explanation which was clearly displayed on the sign in the lobby stating: " * a fee of $39.99 will be added to all orders or if you like we can continue the salad sale and only charge you 19.99 a month" How would you feel about [redacted] then? They rely on repeated business so they encourage honest customer relations so this contrived scenario likely wouldn't happen. peoplefinders is cementing everything that I feel and which others have posted based on their non-responsiveness and unwillingness to return fees which were in my opinion swindled from a trusting consumer. Keep the money if you value the $3 (or whatever it is) over honesty. That will further substantiate all that people are saying about the legitimacy and business practices of peoplefinders.

Review: This service is supposed to provide public records with a fee. I paid the fee and their info was incorrect. To be more exact I was looking for a death certificate on my step father. He died in 1993. On the packet that I chose it had death certificates. I paid the money and got the report. The report did not consist of a death certificate. It did not even have him as dead. It had him living at addresses where he had never lived. I called the agency because they did not deliver what they said they would upon my paying. I spoke with a lady named Ava. She told me flat out It is only $3.45. You will not be getting your money back. Now $3.45 may not seem like much, but how often does that happen. Unsuspecting people needing a death certificate or some other form of public record that this company is promising for a nominal fee and then peoplefinders.com does not deliver what they promised.Desired Settlement: 1. Update their system. 2. Specify things they are unable to deliver. 3. Stop charging people what google can tell you for free. 4. Learn customer service and do not be rude. I do not care how little the amount may seem to you, but it may be all somebody else has.

Business

Response:

We are unable to locate an account under the information provided in the complaint. Our website does not offer Death Certificates. We offer death searches only. The customer is paying to search our data base for the information not an actual Death Certificate.

Review: I was charged for a membership that I did not order. I was also charged 3 other times for things I did not order. I was charged a total of $15.93. When I tried to contact them their phone line did not work.Desired Settlement: I would like a full refund. I was dissatisfied with their product and got charged for stuff I did not order.

Review: I ONLY SIGNED UP FOR THIS SITE TO GET A CRIMINAL RECORD ON SOMEONE. I GOOGLED THE PERSON'S NAME AND ARREST/ED AND PEOPLEFINDERS CAME UP. I SIGNED UP THINKING THAT SINCE I GOOGLED THE PERSON'S NAME AND ARREST, I WOULD BE GIVEN THOSE DETAILS. ONCE MY REPORT WAS READY, I GOT AN EMAIL ALERT FROM THIS COMPANY. WHEN I LOOKED AT THE REPORT, THE CRIMINAL SECTION FOR THIS PERSON WAS EMPTY. THESE PEOPLE ARE SELLING WRONG INFORMTATION. ON TOP OF THERE BEING NO CRIMINAL HISTORY, WHICH I KNOW THERE IS - I JUST WANTED SPECIFIC DETAILS, THE PERSON'S ADDRESS AND WHO THEY WERE RELATED TO WAS WRONG. IT WAS IN FACT THE PERSON BECAUSE OF THE DETAILS I SEARCHED FOR BUT THEIR DATABASE IS WRONG. I TOLD THEM THIS IMMEDIATELY, BECAUSE EVEN MY OWN INFO IS WRONG. I ASKED FOR A REFUND AN THEY REFUSED. THEY STOP RESPONDING TO ME EVEN WHEN I TOLD THEM TO DELETE MY ACCOUNT. I WANT A REFUND BECAUSE I DID NOT GET WHAT I PAID FOR. THEIR INFO IS WRONG, WHEN I GOOGLED THEM IT CLEARLY TOLD ME I COULD GET THE RECORDS WHICH I DID NOT. I WANT MY MONEY BACK AND I WANT SOMEONE TO CONFIRM THAT MY ACCOUNT WAS DELETED AND NO OTHER CHARGES WERE MADE.Desired Settlement: GIVE ME A COMPLETE REFUND AND CLOSE MY ACCOUNT.

Business

Response:

The customer came to our website and purchased a trial membership and ran six reports. We provided the information requested. No refund will be issued. The account has been closed.

Consumer

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I mi only ran those reports which were of my family to see if any of the info was right it was not correct how do you mention me running reports but fail to mention that they were family members and my husband I want a refund or I will have no issue taking you guys to court since my cousin is a lawyer I did not get what I paid for and your information is wrong

Review: I used peoplefinders a few years ago, and like it's performance. I signed up again a couple of months ago on a weekend, and the site would never provide any information, as none of the several internet browsers I tried worked, as when I did a search for someone, the browser would just go to an empty page AND JUST SIT THERE FOREVER AND THEN TIME OUT!!! I tried to call their Technical help that weekend but they were closed. When I asked for my search charge of $19.95 to be returned after I told them it did not return anything of any value, they said NO THAT CANNOT NOT BE DONE!

I WANT MY $19.95 PAYMENT TO BE REFUNDED ASAP, PLUS APPLICABLE BANK OVERDRAFT CHARGES OF $72 BECAUSE THEY KEPT TRYING TO SEND THE CHARGE BACK THRU OVER AND OVER WHEN NO MONEY WAS IN MY ACCOUNT! TOTAL INCLUDING BANK OVERCHARGES = 91.95Desired Settlement: I tried to call their Technical help that weekend but they were closed. Review: In June 2014 I spent $49 to buy a background check report. Without my knowledge they have been charging my Credit Card monthly fees of $24.99/month until now (total $549.78). I never agreed to their subscription and never used their service after my first time purchase. Peoplefinders.com's agent also confirmed there was no activity after my first time purchase and agreed to refund me back 4 months's fee ($99.96). I demanded full refund, but they would not agree. During a conversation with a customer service supervisor, she rudely hung up on me. They engaged in a fraudulent activity, without notifying me I was getting into a monthly charges. I demand full refund. The $49 fee for the actual report I used they can keep it but the rest they have to pay me back.Desired Settlement: I want to be refunded $400 (the net of subscription fees I never agreed to)

Business

Response:

The customer purchased the report and $24.99 membership on 06/20/2014. Refunds have already been issued for $24.95 X 4. No further refunds will be issued. Per our Terms of Use the customer was responsible to cancel the membership ,which was canceled until 04/13/2016.

Review: on 16th of june this year, people finders charged my [redacted] debit card $24.95 . I was confused because what I had purchased is $.95 worth of report. I desperately attempted to contact them..and discuss the issue because there was no email verification about any of these transactions . I got the transaction details from my [redacted] business checking card . For a whole week, they said the transaction was unverifiable and peoplefinders hasn't billed me in any way . When I gave the peoplefinder.com my card that was billed, she said now..she can see I was billed on the 11th of june and 16th of june 2016 . what is this ..if its not a scam? am not worried about 24.95 ( although I want that money refunded to my card ) I am worried that they can deny they got any money from my debit card..and then say ..O we just noticed your were billed . I NEVER APPLIED FOR ANY KIND OF MEMBERSHIP WITH PEOPLEFINDERS. The customer representative bluntly said..'' I have told you multiple times..am not refunding your money '' How far are such people going to be allowed to steal money from people accounts? AM JUST GLAD THAT THAT WASN'T MY BANK CARD . I need them to refund this money . AND IN BOLD LETTERS INDICATE SECTIONS WHERE THEY STATE THAT WHEN YOU FILE A REPORT, WHAT YOU PAY IS $24.95 . If you check out reviews ..am not the only victim . and now...I feel very unsafe dealing with these peopleDesired Settlement: I would want people finders to cancel the ''membership'' which I never knew about, and credit my paypal business card with $24.95 .

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: It is not my mistake that peoplefinders.com don't have my correct email address . How were they able to get money from my card if they had the wrong address? I would comfortably say that ...it is paramount to charging the wrong customer..so am making a case that ...if they indeed don't have the right email address, then they should reimburse my 24.95 on my card . I maintain that this fee was in accurately deducted from my [redacted] business checking card.

Review: I would like a refund for what I think is unethical if not illegal monthly billing for a service that I did not know I had subscribed to. On 20 October 2015 I purchased online what I thought was a $0.95 service from them, however they continued to invoice me for $24.95 each month without notifying me that I was subscribed and without sending monthly invoices or other billing notifications. I called and they confirmed that the website clearly indicated at the time of purchase that I was buying a $0.95 trial period that would automatically upgrade for a full membership, although I do not recall seeing this. The only emails I have received from them were all on 20 October 2015: 1) the welcome email, 2) the invoice for the $0.95, with no indication that this was a trial period or that it would upgrade to a monthly membership; and 3) a status report on the reverse phone lookup I purchased (that is was "processing"). I never received a result for the search. I did not receive any further emails from this company until today when I called an cancelled my membership. They should not be permitted to invoice without any notification other than the "small print" which is written in a way that apparently lulls users into thinking they are purchasing a one-time service, while in fact they are subscribing to a monthly service.Desired Settlement: I spoke on the phone with [redacted] (supervisor) who offered me 3 months of refund for May, April and March, which I accepted, indicating that I wanted a full refund and that I would continue to pursue that end. I therefore request a full refund including Oct 24, Nov 24, Dec 24, Jan 24, Feb 24, for a total of 5 x $24.95 or $124.75.

Business

Response:

The customer agreed to the trial membership during the purchase and did not make an attempt to cancel until 06/02/16. Per our Terms of Use, no further refunds will be given.

Review: Signed up for a one time use report for .95. Then an offer came up for being able to download the report for .45 which I also did. I am not sure where the membership came in but if it was there it was hidden in small font and garble. They have sent e-mails with offers but no indication I was already a "member" or they were charging me monthly. I really feel like they bait people into getting the cheap report and see how much money they can get before people notice. They charged me for Jan, Feb, Mar, and April but would only credit Mar and April. I have contacted my bank about Jan and Feb.

very deceitful.

Also they would not delete my credit card info stored on their servers. I requested this and they indicated they needed it for a "point of reference". They said the credits would take 3 - 5 business days so I asked if I called back in 5 business days if they would delete my card but the rep said they would not.Desired Settlement: Waiting on action of bank to see if they can reverse my charges.

Delete my credit card info from their servers.

Consumer

Response:

After my initial call to peoplefinder's I asked to speak with a manger. One did call back and offered me an additional month credit. (That is a change from my original complaint). I was charged for Jan., Feb., March and April. They initially agreed to credit back April, March then later added in Feb. My bank is looking into it as well under unauthorized charge. So at this point, I am looking for January for $24.95 as well as having them remove my credit card info from their server.I feel there is a ton of people saying the same thing on the Internet. I almost feel like they hope people won't notice. Does not seem right.

Business

Response:

We have issued three refunds to the customer. The membership was signed up for online at our self service website and not canceled until 04/26/16. The account has already been closed so they can be no further charges.

Review: I elected to do a reverse phone number look-up in early February of this year with Peoplefinders.

I was charged .48 on 2/19/16 and 9.99 on 2/20/16. I spoke to a supervisor, named [redacted], regarding these charges and she told me I was incorrect and that I had not been charged those fees. She did not disagree with the $24.95 fee that was also charged on 2/23 for a membership to the site that I did NOT request to have, want to have, or know I was being charged for.

Since February, I have been charged $24.95 monthly on the 25th or 26th of the month, up until and including today, 6/28, AFTER I called to inquire about what the charges were for and then cancelled the membership, again that I had not elected, immediately.

I then got three emails saying that three separate charges of $24.95 were refunded to my credit card. I did not see evidence of this in my billing activity however I did see the pending charge go through today for the 6/26 billing, AFTER I cancelled.

I only knew of these charges because they were listed at the top of my current pending activity and I was reviewing my charges before paying my balance in full, on time, which I do every month.

I made several calls to Peoplefinders and they have told me there is nothing they can do besides the three months refund. I asked to speak to a supervisor. This supervisor seems to be one of the two for the entire company. She told me they went above and beyond in refunding the three months. She would not let me speak to anyone else. She was not helpful or caring. This is a business that I see now from researching it on google has had this same complaint before-a link to which is on the first page when you Google the company.

They switched me to the voicemail of a "supervisor" who never returned my call and I don't even believe exists. Nor did I ask to be switched to voicemail since I had already left two messages that were unreturned.

This company is crooked and I want the money I am owed refunded to my card.

Thank you, [redacted]Desired Settlement: A refund of the monthly fee of $24.95 for five months:

Feb.

March

April

May

June

IF I was not refunded the three months they emailed me about yesterday.

IF those charges do turn out to be refunded according to Chase, then I will just be seeking the

Feb and March charges of 24.95 each.

I agree to the charge of 9.95 and .48 in Feb. I have an email from their company confirming that I asked to do a reverse phone look up. I did not elect to be a member, and was unaware that I would become one.

Business

Response:

The account was set up under a trial membership that was not canceled till 06/27/16.The customer has already been refunded three charges of $24.95. No further refunds will be given.

Review: I opted-out of Peoplefinders.com a couple of months ago. The opt-out was successful. My name has returned to the webpages in the Peoplefinders website. I have tried opting out again without success. On the phone and in their email letters they send me the same answer: use their online opt-out process. Complaining to them has become annoying because after sending six screenshots that prove the clicking process does not work - they have not solved the technical difficulty.Desired Settlement: I would like the name [redacted] the one who lives at [redacted] to be removed from their database and any web pages associated with their company. If the name [redacted] is not linked to any information - it is just a name it is o.k. to leave it as an ad. (Do not use the middle initial). I have legally changed my name to [redacted] and I don't want it in their database either.

Business

We have submitted a request to suppress this directory listing online. Please allow 7 to 10 business days for this to reflect online.

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

Review: The information I found on this site on background and criminal checks are not up to date and more importantly, inaccurate and incomplete. I was checking the background and criminal records of a potential romantic partner that I met online. Their report missed a serious criminal offense for the person I was checking. I was able to find that information without paying at other sites. In fact, they did not have the current address of the person, which was on every other free site.

I subscribed to PeopleFinders hoping I would be able to get the best results. PeopleFinders' policy is not to refund the subscription value, but if the information is useless because you cannot rely on their data, and you have to look elsewhere for an accurate background and criminal record history, there is no point in using this website or keeping this subscription.Desired Settlement: I would like consumers to know that this site is unreliable and decisions based on the information they provide may be disastrous.

Business

Response:

We have issued a refund of $29.85 for the six month membership the customer had purchased.

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to my concern, and I find it satisfactory. I appreciate that they have refunded my subscription fee but hope that they improve their business practice and provide the service they promise and that consumers expect. The information they are supposed to provide on background checks are critical and many safety issues depend on the information. It is unfortunate that the information I received and many others consumers may, is incorrect and incomplete. Thank you for taking this issue seriously and I appreciate your help in resolving this matter. [redacted]

Review: I placed an order for a background report, was charged $9.95. The trial period for 3 days if cancelled was supposed to be only $2.95.
