Shaw Academy Reviews (2754)

This company offers a Free-trial but charged me $69.99 for a Premium membership before the Free Trial is over and refuses to refund. Very unethical.
This online educational service offers a 4 week-Free Trial to try out their class. They require a credit card to "set-up" your account. They say you can choose to continue on after your free trial if you decide you like their service. There are 8 classes offered in the Free Trial, which are only offered in blocks of 2 classes a week on a 4 week cycle. I set up my Free Trial on April 27th. The company made a $.50 charge to my account on that date which confirms the accuracy of that set-up date. I started taking their Social Media Marketing online class. After 6 classes I decided that I did not like the information, nor the teacher leading the class as her presentation was at warped speed and hard to understand. I contacted the company on May 25th to cancel (my trial was to end April 27th). They sent email confirmation of my cancellation on May 25th, but charged my credit card on file $69.99 for a Premium Membership anyway. I contacted the company the same day to request a refund of this amount. Someone named Reha responded by saying that by giving them my credit card to set up the account with Shaw Academy, I authorized the charge to my account. I informed them that I cancelled before the expiration of the Free Trial, but they refused to refund. Instead they told me that they would be giving me additional memberships and other products that I don't want, nor ask for. I informed that I was not interested, I just wanted my money back. I am home with a lot of free time due to this Covid-19 pandemic. I thought I'd try an online class. What a mistake. This company is totally unethical. I don't want any of their services or products. I would just like my money back since I did not choose to move forward with any of their memberships and I notified them in the requisite time period.

Desired Outcome

I would like a refund of $69.99 to my Visa credit card ending in 4692.

Charged without permission!
Hello, I signed up for the free month trial membership with Shaw Academy for a Nutrition course and had to provide them with my credit card information. After two weeks, I canceled my account and it required me to call a number to confirm my cancelation, I did and through the phone, it confirmed that my account was canceled but I never received an email of cancelation from them. Today, May 26, 2020, my bank noticed me that there's a charge from Shaw Academy of 69.99$ which I didn't make. I tried to contact my bank but they can't refund the money for me because I don't have any proof of my cancelation and I have to cancel my card and get a new one. I tried to contact Shaw Academy but it's impossible to reach a representative. I google search and found out many people had the same problem with this company, it's totally a scam!

Desired Outcome

I need Shaw Academy to refund for the payment I didn't make, cancel my account which I already canceled and delete all of my information including my credit card information.

I contacted them via the email they gave me on Jun 3, 2020 regarding to refund issue and sent it again on Jun 5, 2020, no staff reached out to me and I have received no feedback nor refund from them until now. Instead they keep spamming my email urging me to obtain their hard copy diploma! I just want a refund and all my information be deleted from their website so they stop spamming my email.

I was billed despite my cancellation 2 weeks before end of free trial
I inserted payment details for a free trial/subscription service for a course on line On april 26th called : Digital Marketing. On May 1st, I cancelled my membership on line
On May 2nd, I called Shaw as requested to confiem m cancellation. I spent 15 minutes over the phone going through a bunch of arguments to make me stay. I said NO to all and asked the lady to assure me there would be no further payment.
On May 24th, I received a notification that I sent a payment of $69.99 to Shaw Academy.
I e mailed them. They responded they were not responsible and tried to sell me more. I called Paypal resolution center but by magic, my membership showed as active. I called my bank. couldn't see the payment yet.

Desired Outcome

The amount of the course charged $70 + indemnity of $500 for the time I wasted in calls, e mails and patience. I think this school should be closed.

I signed up for a free 30 day trial and was charged $69.99 TWICE after not cancelling. I never even used my free trial.
I signed up for a 30 day free trial on March 25th, 2020. I never utilized my free trial (never took any of the classes). I got charged $69.99 on April 23rd, 2020 and then again on May 20th, 2020 for the same amount. I asked for a refund since I never took a class and am not interested in taking one with Shaw Academy ever and they denied my refund. I have been furloughed from my job due to COVID-19 and need all of my funds for essentials such as food and medicine.

Desired Outcome

I would like a refund of the money taken from my account back which totals out to $139.98. I never utilized any of their services nor do I intend on using them in the future.

Tried to cancel free trial
I tried to cancel a free 30 day trial within 5 minutes of signing up because the course material was not what I was hoping for. After having to click cancel multiple times with increasingly annoying statements I was finally given a phone number and told I have to call to confirm the cancellation. I called, after attempting to cancel it and having to listen to almost 20 minutes of "are you sure you want to cancel?" Automated .messages they finally said it was cancelled...however not once did they have me confirm the account number I was trying to cancel AND the automated system kept referring to me by a different name, I can only assume from this evidence that someone previously had my current cell phone number and I have now cancelled that person's account. There was no way to speak to a real live person to get the proper account cancelled and all emails and facebook messages so far have not been returned. If I can't get the actual account cancelled I will be forced to cancel my credit card just to avoid being fraudulently charged for something I have tried to cancel in good faith and in a timely manner. The customer service of this "school" is atrocious and I will warn everyone I know to avoid this at all costs.

Desired Outcome

I want my account cancelled and to make sure that they don't try to charge me in the future.

Shaw Academy Response • Jun 03, 2020

Dear Student,

As per your request we have cancelled your subscription. Please be assured that you will not be charged way forward.

Like many other customers on the Revdex.com website I was unduly billed 49.90 by the Sahw Academy. I had already canceled my registration. See attachments.
Payment method:credit card card mastercard
Amount:49,90
Problem :subscription already canceled during the free trial 10th April.
I was billed this amount on the 18th of May.

Desired Outcome

I want a full refund of the undued amount of 49,90 I want them to delete my account and my personal data name, surname, mobile phone, email and credit card data according to the GDPR European Laws. They have to follow these laws since I am a European citizen.

My account with Shaw Academy was cancelled the on the day the free month subscription is to end -May 26th 2020. However Shaw academy charged for monthly subscription on the May 26th without my acknowledgment. I do not want this subscription. There is a fraudulent charge of $69.99.
I have called my credit card and filed fraudulent charge report.

Yes. Thank you Revdex.com!!!!

I was charged $39.99 for a toolkit I did not want to purchase and never used. I emailed and asked for a refund and they would not refund.
I was offered a one month free trial membership from Verizon to Shaw Academy.
After one of the lessons, there was a one click pop-up button for a toolkit that I hit to find out what it was but it automatically charged my credit card $39.99. I emailed them right away to let them know that I did not intend to purchase any toolkit, that it was misleading and wanted a refund. They told me they could not refund my credit card and offered to give me other products for free instead. I emailed back to let them know that I was not interested in any of these products and wanted a refund. I never received an answer and the charge had not been reversed.

Desired Outcome

I would like a refund of $39.99 for a toolkit I did not want.

I asked for a refund because I purchased something I never wanted in the first place without permission and they don't want to give me my money back.
An e-certificate was purchased by accident, just by scrolling the page you can accidentally buy a certificate for something I haven't even studied for . I didnt even took a class and was never intending on buying a certificate. I contacted them by email twice to get a refund on the e-certificate thats costed $36 was purchased without my consent. They prefer to offer me credit on the app that I'm not interested in instead of giving me my refund.

Desired Outcome

The resolution I seek is my $36 back. No credit for the app, no e-certificate. I want my money back.

Unable to cancel membership or get refund.
I subscribed for a 30-day premium membership with Shaw Academy on April 24. I was notified by PayPal of US$69.99 being charged by the company on May 22. I tried to cancel the membership in my account but was refused. I was instead given a case number and a phone number with which I was apparently supposed to call and speak to customer service directly regarding cancellation and refund. However after many days of attempts I still find no one at the phone number. From beginning to end, I received no confirmation of my registration nor any billing notification, and I did not access any course because I had forgotten entirely about the subscription. I signed up with the idea of a pastime during this stay-at-home period. Now I realize in this time of global crisis and uncertain financial situation ahead, that's simply a luxury. Please cancel my membership and refund me the US$69.99 subscription fee. I did not use the company's service even once.

Desired Outcome

Please cancel my membership and refund me the US$69.99 subscription fee. I did not use the company's service even once.

I was given the following reply by Shaw Academy:
We are unable to process subscription refunds unfortunately after the trial expiry, as per the terms and conditions.

However, we can confirm your membership is cancelled thus ensuring no further payments will be processed.

We are also providing you with 6-months access totally free of charge worth of $399, the least we can do is ensure you benefit from our professional certifications, so we can turn this unfortunate event in to a neutral, if not positive immediately. You will be able to complete the courses you initially joined and many other courses.

To log into your account and update your schedule with the days and times you prefer, visit here.

Thank you very much for your time and happy studying.

Kind Regards,
Allen
From what I could see, they are just trying to lure people into greater misfortune. I was never given a confirmation email of my initial subscription. These people just stealthily took away a large sum of money from me. If I log into my account again, they might secretly re-activate my membership and someday I will wake up to another bill that I am totally unaware of. At this point I am in high doubt of the credibility of this company. For an online educational institute, they cannot even write in grammatically sound English. I think they just copied and pasted the same reply, as they have done to many other customers. It might even be the same agent. I just want my subscription fee back and never have anything to do with these people.

I signed up for a 30 day free trial on April 25th and was charged $69.99 USD on May 23rd, not a full 30 day trial. Won't give a refund, only freebies.
I saw their ad on Instagram and signed up for a 30 day free trial on April 25th and was charged $69.99 USD on May 23rd, not a full 30 day trial. I immediately canceled via the app immediately after getting the PayPal billing notice. (I'd actually been in quarantine and just got out the evening before and wasn't thinking about them at the time. I still had one more day left to remember them and cancel, , but they didn't give me the chance. Had they sent the reminder email like stated at registration, I would have been reminded and could have canceled sooner. The number provided hung up on me several times, but I did get through eventually. It was through their automated system, so the name that they had for my number was not correct, and it did not ask for the reference number that they give when trying to cancel through the app. So, I figured it would be better to send an email in case I affected someone else's account. They did not send a reminder email 3 days before like they say at sign up. They keep saying they can't issue a refund due to their T&C but they can offer free courses worth hundreds of dollars for several months, and one year according to the latest from Anna. How is it they can offer courses worth $699 but can't refund $69.99 with is worth far less? I canceled the next round of courses and called the number today. The name for my account according to their automated system is Bailey Thomas. I hope Bailey wasn't active on the platform because his/her courses have now been canceled due to Shaw's faulty automated system. The system stated that I had just then been sent an email confirming this cancellation. I keep checking my email, but there's nothing there, yet. I would like my refund back, please. Thank you.

Desired Outcome

I would like to have my payment refunded, please. Thank you.

I would like to close the complaint for now.

Thank you.

Through email contact with Sid (Shaw Academy) ***@shawacademy.com he is flatly refusing to refund, despite the tool kit not even relevant to the class being taken.

I have also tried to call on *** (number quoted on there website after following complicated contact form) to get this number is not available.

Desired Outcome

I was charged 2 times for a subscription for an online course after I which I requested to be cancelled within the company's 30 day free trial period.

On March 12,2020 I subscribed to a 30 day free trial subscription to Shaw Academy for online courses. I used a credit card ending. I received an email from ***@reminder.shawacademy.com on March 12 at 9.29pm requesting me to confirm my registration and verify my card details. The emails said (1) I don't pay anything at that time (2) I would not be cancelled if I cancelled before 30days (3) I would get a reminder 3 days before my credit card was charged. After confirming, I realized this is not the service I wanted so I requested for a cancellation via email on March 12 at 9:51pm to ***@shawacademy.com and copied ***@shawacademy.com. On March 13 at 9.24pm I received an email from Justine M., Student Guidance Manager from ***@reminder.shawacademy.com indicating I missed a class and requesting me to reschedule. I responded at 10:04pm to Justine that I requested to cancel the subscription and to delete my account. I received a ticket ID number #*** for my query. After I continued to receive emails from the company, I wrote another email on March 16 under the ticket number provided indicating that I wanted my subscription cancelled, my account deleted and to stop receiving emails. After March 17, I stopped receiving any messages from the company after they confirmed receipt of my request. I never took any of the courses after I requested a cancellation. On May 18 I found out that my credit card had been charged 2 times - on 4/10/2020 a $59.99 charge and on 5/8/2020 a $59.99 charge. I wrote an email to ***@shawacademy.com and followed up with a phone call to (XXX)XXX-XXXX to complain and request a refund. On March 22,2020 I received an email from Vadik refusing to issue my refund claiming that I did not cancel during my trial period. I have provided copies of my correspondence with Shaw Academy showing I requested several times in writing to cancel the subscription before the end of the trial period which would have been April 11, 2020.

Desired Outcome

I would like a refund of $119.98 which was charged to my credit card.

I was charged a month after I cancelled my membership the same day I signed up.
I signed up for membership on X-XX-XX I immediatly cancelled my membership due to the time restrictions. I received an email confirming my cancelled membership. I received a charge on 5-22-20. I contacted them and provided my cancellation email. They stated that I was not able to get a refund because I did not cancel in the 4 week free trial period. I have showed that email of cancellation yet they still refuse to refund my funds. They would only provide me with a free class subscription of something I cancelled because I didn't have time for it. I cancelled in the time frame, the lady on the phone said no money should be charged. I have also opened up a dispute with paypal.

Desired Outcome

To warn others of poor business practice and also push them to refund the money that is owed to me.

Shaw Academy Response • Jun 01, 2020

Dear Student,

Our support team has informed that your refund has been processed as per your request. It will be credited back to your account within 5-7 business days.

Thank you

Charged my twice: once for an account that was never created, and once on the last day of my trial (in that same morning it still showed "1 day left")
On April 17, 2020 I saw an ad for a 4 week trial with Shaw Academy. I decided to sign up, started the process, entered my PayPal account but did not complete the process and therefore my account was never created and I didn't have access to it -
I was unable to login / reset password, nor did I receive any welcome email or indication that an account has been created.
I assumed, that since an account wasn't created, they also wouldn't charge me for it.

Two days later, on April 19, 2020 I saw the same ad and decided again to sign up. This time I entered my credit card details, and made sure to complete the account creation process.
This time the system actually created an account for me, I was able to login and I received a welcome email!

To my great surprise, even though the first account did not seem to exist and I had absolutely no access to it, they still went ahead and charged my PayPal account on May 15, 2020.
Needless to say, I received no warning or notice that this was going to happen, I assume because this account was never actually created.

Then, on the morning of May 17, I entered my account (meaning the one I was able to access) and saw that I still had one more day for the trial.
I even clicked to cancel it, and the system asked me if I wanted to get a reminder about the upcoming charge - which I asked for (but never actually received).
I decided to wait until the evening (I am in Israel, hence IL time, which is earlier than UTC) and logged into my account at 11PM to cancel the subscription.

Again, to my big surprise, I see that they have already charged me! This time on my credit card.

So to summarize, I was charged $140 - once for an account that was never created, and once for an account that still had a few hours on a free trial.

I have contacted the company and they refuse to issue a refund, though they do not offer any explanation to why I was charged.

Unfortunately, only now that they are refusing to refund the charges, I checked the reviews and see the amount of complaints exactly about this issue.

I am attaching proof of both charged - the CC charge appears in Hebrew but you can still see the business name, the amount and the date.

Thank you

Desired Outcome

I am seeking for a complete refund, $69.99 on my credit card, and $69.99 on my PayPal account.

Shaw Academy Response • Jun 01, 2020

Dear Student,

Our support team has informed that your refund has been processed as per your request. It will be credited back to your account within 5-7 business days.

Thank you

Shaw Academy made unauthorized charge to my free trial hours after I signed up, violating their own terms and conditions.
I have seen Shaw Academy for years and they seem to be a legitimate business so, upon coming across a 4-week free trial on one of their graphic design course, I decided to check it out. I signed up late at night on May 17th and the system notified me that I will be charged if I don't cancel prior to Jun 14th. Yet, I woke up the very next day to see $69.99 deducted from my account. Consequently, my "free trial" became a premium membership with a monthly subscription of $69.99/month without my consent.

Some excerpts quoted from their terms and conditions:
"... hereby authorize Shaw Academy to charge your credit card on a regular basis to pay the fees AS THEY ARE DUE."
...
"We will bill any Payment Method provided by You for your monthly membership fee AT THE END OF THE FREE TRIAL PERIOD unless you cancel your membership prior to the end of the free trial period."

-> The supposedly 4-week-long trial had barely started by May 18th and I had not even had my first class yet. No extra fees are due as per their terms and conditions, either.

I did contact their customer support immediately following the unauthorized transaction to ask for a refund. The support representative talked in circles without actually noting my complaints/arguments, repeatedly citing the fact that I agreed to their terms and conditions as grounds to refuse a refund for my "free trial". As I have demonstrated above with those short excerpts, Shaw Academy violated their terms and conditions while I have not. While the support representative has agreed to cancel my subscription, the subscription is set to expire on May 21st, 2021 - ONE YEAR LATER. There is no guarantee that Shaw Academy will not make unauthorized charge again during this one-year period. Other complaints on Revdex.com have also shown that a refund is possible, which suggests that the support representative that I contacted was being dishonest and deliberately tried to wear me down so I would stop pursuing this case.

Desired Outcome

A full refund of the unauthorized fee I was charged with, along with the immediate cancellation/deletion of my account to prevent any further charge. No alternative solution. No "extend your account to _ months worth $__ free of charge" or anything similar.

I did the 4 week trial . A day before if ended I try to reached them on their website to end my free trial . I never heard back from them . Then I contacted them from email not once but 3 time still haven't heard from them nor my refund .

Desired Outcome

I want my refund for 71 dollars that I have been charged for . It is not my fault that you guys can't keep on your job . I did try to contact you to cancel my free trial but you guys fail to hear me out . I am only Interested on a refund not you or your classes.

I canceled my subscription with Shaw on March 26, 2020, and I have discovered they are continuing to charge my account and have refused refunding me.
I canceled my subscription with Shaw on March 26, 2020. At the time, I had started a free trial with them. I quickly figured out that it would be too much work during my actual college classes during the semester. I proceeded to cancel the subscription the day after beginning it without attending a single class. I have email evidence of my cancelation, and I expressed some difficulties at the time with their methods of canceling a membership. I do not regularly check my charges on my card, so I missed an April 20th charge of 69.99 on my account, but I saw it before the next month. I emailed Shaw asking for my account to be actually canceled (it still has shown on my Shaw account that it's canceled since March, and the payments aren't even showing on my account in their website). My emails with Shaw started on May 17th. Right after I began my correspondence asking for a refund, Shaw charged my account again, for 69.99, a couple days earlier than the renewal date (May 18th this time). I have since had numerous emails with "Gomes" from Shaw. They still have yet to agree to issue a refund to my account for the total of 139.98 at this point.

Desired Outcome

I am seeking a complete refund of $139.98 for the two months of wrongful charges. I also would like to receive a formal apology from Shaw and recognition of the malpractice.

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
The amount has been returned to my account as requested.

Shaw Academy refuses to refund my money on an accidental purchase. They also seem to refuse to cancel my membership.
On May 18, I signed up for a free 4 week trial membership for a graphic design program. The following day, I decided I was no longer interested and went on their website via my phone (so I used their mobile website) to cancel the membership. During the process, I accidentally purchased a certificate for $39.95. I had no use or desire for this, so I searched their site for a way to refund me. My only option was to email their billing department which I did. They have emailed me saying they cannot refund me but will upgrade my membership but I had already cancelled my membership by then. I explained this several times and It seems as though I'm not speaking with a person but rather a robot. I'm not sure if they even cancelled the membership as I requested because I continue to get emails and phone calls about the courses. I have called on a now disconnected number to try to get them to cancel and again was told my membership was cancelled, but I doubt it was. This is absolutely unacceptable and quite frankly a bit crazy to keep someone's money when they aren't event a member anymore. Bottom line is this: I called and emailed this company the same day as this accidentally purchase to cancel the membership and get my money back for a certificate this is null and void. They have given me the run around, refused to cancel my membership (their last emails says the certificate is proof of the completion of the program but if I'm not in the program why would you send me that?) and have refused to refund me. All I want is my $39.95 back and confirmation from them in writing that my membership is cancelled.

Desired Outcome

I want a refund for the $39.95 for a null and void certificate and I want them to send me an email confirming that my membership is cancelled.
