Company has unethical billing practices, charging customers without authorization.
I signed up for a 4-week free trial on 4/9/2020. On 5/5/2020 my account indicated there was 2 days left on my free trial. On 5/6/2020 I cancelled the account. My credit card was charged on 5/7/2020. I asked for a refund and was refused. In addition, there are one-click purchase links everywhere on their webpage, and constant pop-ups with one-click purchases. It only takes one mistake to accidentally click on the multitude of constant one-purchases. This company should be forced to change their sales and marketing practices, in the interest of consumer protection. Clearly, many victims fallen prey to their deceptive practices.

Desired Outcome

Please refund my credit card $110 USD. Company should be held responsible for deceptive practices.

After completing a course and cancelling my relationship, Shaw debited funds from my account for another course. They won't respond to refund requests
I signed up for a free course with Shaw Academy. On the last day of the course, I was unable to complete my final assignment and quiz. At 10:15pm that night, a representative called me asking me to to continue with the courses. I explained that I could not due to finances and the pandemic. I asked why my final assignment and quiz were locked. He offered me some other discounts which I did not agree to take and then advised me that I could go back onto the site and complete my final assignments, that they were now unlocked. I went on the next day and completed the final assignments. Fifteen minutes after their completion, I requested to sever my relationship with Shaw via a cancellation. I was required to call a number to complete that request, which I did. The day after the cancellation, I received a notice from my bank that funds had been debited from my account by Shaw for the next set of courses. I contacted them immediately and was issued an apology and assured via an email correspondence that the cancellation had been put through. I again asked about the refund of my monies which had been taken in error. I have only received a we have received your inquiry response and nothing else. Those funds should never have been taken from my account and I fully expect these people to refund them to me as they were advised that they were taken in error.

Desired Outcome

I wish to have my money ($69.99) refunded as it should never have been taken. The relationship with Shaw had been cancelled, which is reflected in their email response.

All that I asked was that my monies be refunded. If that is done then my issue will have been resolved.

I was charged for a toolkit I did not select on their start course page and now they refuse to give me a refund and I need that to buy food.
I started the shaw academy free course on 29th April and the day I started I selected the start course button. The website then took me to a new page where I was charged for toolkit which I did not select to purchase and the money was automatically taken without my consent.

I have got in touch with shaw academy on 5 seperate occasions now through their site an email between April 29th and 7th may.

They have disregarded my request and say they cannot refund me depsite me not giving consent for this purchase.

The email adress provided above is the email I used to sign up for the course

They took the money from my paypal account. The email ID used for paypal was ***@hotmail.com ***
I am not working at the moment due to covid19 and I really need that money to put food on the table. They took £39.95 from my account.

They've disregarded what I've said and when I did actually get responses they were generic respinses saying they couldn't refund me despite me not wanting or using the toolkit they charged me for.

I don't know what to do as I have bills to pay and need to feed myself. It's already a difficult time and I feel they are taking advantage of people trying to better themselves in these hard times.

Desired Outcome

I want a full refund for the money that was stolen from me.

I attempted to cancel my membership for a Digital Marketing class under a free trial and was charged anyway. Asked for refund and no response.
I joined a Digital Marketing class over the span of approximately one month under a free trial. Being that I would not be charged unless I canceled before the deadline of May 3th, 2020 which is on a Sunday. I marked on my personal calendar to cancel before then so I would not be charged. On May 2nd, 2020 which was on a Saturday, I attempted to cancel my subscription via the Shaw Academy app. However, they requested that I must call them in order to cancel the subscription service and they were only open during normal business hours Monday through Friday. Since they were unavailable at the time to answer phone calls, I sent an email to ***@shawacademy.com requesting that my Digital Marketing subscription be canceled since there was no way I could contact them before the deadline to cancel which was May 3, 2020, on a Sunday. I was then sent an email from ***@shawacademy.com with a list of different situations I may be facing as a response to canceling my membership. The following Monday, May 4 I get charged $69.99 for missing the deadline for canceling the membership. The following day, I send an email again to with a screenshot of the charge to ***@shawacademy.com and telling them that this is a pending charge that I am expecting to not go through. The following day, I get sent an email from Paul of Shaw Academy firstly promoting Shaw Academy's services extensively before addressing the issue at hand which was my request for a refund of $69.99. Paul said quote "Now in terms of your account, I have personally reviewed your account and found that you had subscribed using your debit/credit card/payment method and availed of a 4-week free trial after which payment would be made. All aspects of this were made clear at registration, within your member's area and via communications. Since you did not cancel during your trial period, payment was processed as per the terms and conditions associated with your membership" as well as "In terms of processing a refund, unfortunately, this is not something we can do as the free
trial was made available to you as per the terms and conditions you agreed to upon registration and the revenue has been recognized as per our revenue recognition policies." I was then prompted to send an email back letting them know that they fraudulently charged me when I explicitly requested via email that my membership be canceled, yet ignored my request and charged me anyway. I have screenshots of the exchanges I've had between myself and Shaw Academy as evidence of them fraudulently charging me $69.99.

Desired Outcome

I am simply asking for a refund of $69.99 since I requested that my membership be cancelled before the renewal deadline.

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
They realized the mistake made and have taken steps towards providing a refund for changing me when I cancelled before the deadline.

Shaw Academy charged my card 30 days into a 3 month free promo program through FIDO, and bribed me with free offers to try and justify their action.
I signed up and used Shaw Academy's free 3 month promo program that they advertised with FIDO, and was charged a fee of $71 (on my visa card) on April 16th 2020, 28 days into my free trial instead of the advertised 3 months.

They clearly mislead me on the advertising with false marketing which led me to sign up through it with them, and further on when I tried to unsubscribe (that same day once I saw the early charge), they made the process excruciatingly impossible as they don't give you a direct link to unsubscribe unless you call and wait on the line for 30 minutes as they ask you multiple questions on a survey to try and trick you into an upsell for other services, and use cultish language to guilt trip you "to not give up on your dreams and goals".

I also contacted the customer service email to find a resolution with them and politely emailed back and forth with them to get a refund as an unhappy customer, but instead of helping me they essentially bribed and offered me different programs for free to convince me to let the complaint and unwanted charge of $71 go.

Eventually they simply ignored and stopped replying to my emails once they clearly couldn't find any other way to justify their actions and silence me.

There is also no phone number available to contact them at to talk to a representative directly, as they are surely avoiding other customers who've they committed fraud with.

Finally the subscription they charged me for was the most expensive one ($71!!!). Not once throughout the sign-up process or afterwards did they ask or give the option of which subscription I would like once the trial of 3 months is over IF I even would have chosen to continue. They simply defaulted to subscribing me to the most expensive one, to make the most money off of me. For the record, there is no way to sign up for the free trial without giving your credit card number that they can then charge as they wish apparently.

The representative that I was dealing with was Marcas and the case number is #XXXXXXX. I have the original email thread to prove my communication.

Desired Outcome

Give me a full refund of the $71 that I was mischarged on the original Visa Credit Card, as I got tricked into this horrific scheme through false marketing.

I never authorized Shaw Academy to charge my account for continuing education. I never received a communication asking if I want to continue education
I signed up for free online classes, after my last class there was an information about continuing the course I would have to pay for classes. I did not take any action as I did not intend to continue as the classes were not that great. My last class was on Tuesday 05/05/2020. On Friday, 05/08/2020, without any notice I saw a charge into my account of $69.99 that I never authorized. My classes were always on Tuesdays and Fridays and after each class they would send me an email asking me to confirm my attendance for the next class. On my last class, 05/05/2020, after It finished they said to continue I would have to purchase the next module, which I did not do. I did not said ok to the offer for payments to purchase the next module nor click on anything inquiring the information beyond the free classes as I had no interest in continuing. I also did not received any email asking me to confirm my next class as they were doing it before. Three days later without any communication I see a charge in my bank account. I signed up with them for the free classes in the beginning of the pandemic as I've been furloughed and was trying to occupy my time like everyone else. When I finished my last class there was no information or message saying that in order for you to not be charged you need to cancel your account as we had to create one in order to do the online classes.

Desired Outcome

I would like to receive a refund on the amount of $69.99, which it was charged unauthorized in my account.

Scam. I didn't even start the trial month, and the period wasn't even over, that these thieves took 49.99 from me, without preventing or informing !
Scam, I didn't even start the trial month, and the month period wasn't even over, that these thieves took 49.99 from me. Since then I have logically asked for a refund, but they categorically refuse by pretending everything and anything with repeat tickets. I have seen that I am not the only one, but se are a lot in the same case. I hope that with this complaint the thing will change.

I asked for a refund of the 49,99 that were taken unfairly and without my consent. I explained that I am a student in a difficult situation, I can't afford to pay for something that I didn't even try - to believe in - in the first time !

I have been tricked by their Facebook publicity sayin precisely « Subscribe now to our free month trial of Marketing Digital online course ! ». It was supposed to start in 7 April, and logically to end in 7 May if we count 30 days. But the context of Covid-19 made that I had to change my home location, and I couldn't even start the program and I didn't attend to any class, not even in the supposed first day (7 April). So I never started the programme, and still I was keeping a close look to the end of the trial date to unsubscribe before (7 May), regarding the term of the contract and the publicity. It happened that in 4th May - due to a better personal conditions - I wanted to start the month of trial and try the Shaw academy. So I sent an e-mail asking If it's possible to start from now the month of trial, since I didn't have any time before. And I planned to unsubscribe till the 5 or 6 May, depending on their answer and before the first deadline.

My e-mail was sent at 5 AM (Paris Hour). What did the Shaw Academy do ? In 12 AM I have seen that my account have been debuted from an amount of 48,99. Without any answer to my e-mail nor any notification. Everything is done to fool the consumer and to trick him, by no clear information about the contract duration and no notification alarming about the end date of free trial for example. And I learned - after they took money from my account only - that their month of trial, is not really a month, but 4 weeks, which mean 28 days. It's a clear lie in their first Facebook Adds, that tricked me and unclear conditions and terms of contract.

Whatsoever, I did the calcul 7 April + 28 days give us and end subscription at least in the 5 May at 23:59 PM, which mean in 6 May and a proceeding payment in 6 May. But still what did they do ? They took my payment in 4th May morning. Which is a complete thief and an unfair payment. I asked for a refund with all these information, but they just don't give it any attention and just want to keep the money stolen, without any shame ! They dare to force me to follow their course for a kind of great deal « Oh we offer you 6 free month trial in place of the refund ! ». But who would want the services of a scam company ? And who would pay even 1$ for even a lifetime service of this Scam Company?

Now I have seen that their are Facebook groups of people that have been scammed, and their are a lot of reviews given in website like trustpilot by other people. I am sure that the « good opinions » are fake.

I am asking refund as I haven't been clearly informed about the terms of the contract, as I was tricked by false advertising information in Facebook and as I never started one course. They know it and I have received e-mail and message telling me that I never attended to even the first class.

Since they are talking about the term of the contract, know that I agreed for a month trial, which they changed into 28 days, but I never even started it, and without speaking about the fact that it was supposed to start in 7 April. If we add 28 days, it was supposed to give me at least time to take the decision to unsubscribe until 5 May. But they took my money in the 4th May ( this while I was sending them an email explaining my situation and, naively, a special demand!). I ask for a refund of my 49,99 and a sanction against them.

Desired Outcome

I want the refond of the money taken unfairly from me (49,99), and an apology for the lost of time caused. Also I want the company to make it clear in the term of their advertising that it's not a month of trial but four week, and that even if we never started the programme they will fee us. I want also that the company make it clear that they DON'T send an e-mail 3 days before they charge, while they prétend to do this in their first e-mail send and in their prospectus (see the screenshot in attached pièce sent at the subscription to the free trial) ! I want them to stop lying and stealing the money of poor naive students !

I would like Shaw Academy to refund my money and cancel my subscription properly.
I signed up for Shaw Academy because of a promotion with FIDO for 3 months free online course. However, there was no way to enter the promo code on the Academy website and I was charged $34.95CAD for a toolkit that was supposed to be free from their email. The subscription cancelation process was very sketchy too.

Desired Outcome

Please refund my money of $34.95CAD and cancel my subscription properly.

Requesting a refund after I was charged for a course that I cancelled. Also for the company to stop trying to sell me extra courses.
I signed up for the free trial and cancelled my account after 2 weeks, via the phone AND over email, getting confirmation of this cancellation.
They said they will "credit your account with 2 months free access completely free of charge"...

Then I get a notification that they have charged my PayPal account £49.99 and will take the money out of my account even after I cancelled. Now they will not let me dispute the claim as they keep trying to sell me new courses and extras and I keep getting notifications and emails from them about missing classes.
This company is a SCAM and I will take this dispute to the media if I have to as they are unlawfully taking money from people. I am currently in contact with other people they have scammed and done this to. Disgraceful.

Desired Outcome

I would like a full refund and to stop being harassed by their emails and notifications trying to get me to purchase new things or continue with them.

I have been charged £39.95 for a toolkit that I didn't purchase!
I signed up for a free course on the 8th of may, I entered my PayPal details understanding that I can cancel before I start getting paid after the first month. I then noticed you could buy toolkits before I could even see what this was it popped up on the page congratulations for your purchase!!! I hadn't even clicked on it and it had charged me £39.95. It didn't ask me to re enter my PayPal details, didn't ask for confirmation nothing!! It just took £39.95 from my PayPal, I haven't touched the toolkit and have tried so many different ways to getting in touch with someone, I just want my money back in my account.

Desired Outcome

I want a refund of the full £39.95

Customer Response • May 22, 2020

They have refunded me the full ammount, thank you for helping

I tried to cancel my account during the free trial. I called and was told it was cancelled but I was still charged. I emailed & they refuse to refund.
I signed up for a free 4-week trial on 4/7/20. I attempted to cancel through their website on 4/22 and was instructed to call a given number. I called on 4/28 and listened to an automated response that, after 4 minutes, told me my account was cancelled. I was then charged $69.99 on 5/5. I have an open dispute through PayPal for this. I also emailed and asked Shaw to cancel my account on 5/5 and to refund me my monthly fee. I received a response on 5/8 stating that my account had been cancelled but that my money would NOT be refunded because I didn't cancel in time. However, when I checked my account at 10:00 pm on 5/8 it was still active. I emailed Shaw again asking for a refund and cancellation of my account.

Desired Outcome

I would like my $69.99 membership fee refunded, as I did cancel within the 4-week timeframe, and I would like my membership cancelled.

I was unable to stream classes. I reached out to Shaw Academy and they said that since I didn't cancel during the 7 day trial period they don't owe me a refund. I never was able to attend a single class due to their software not being compatible with my device.

Desired Outcome

I want a full refund for service I never received. That's two months at $59.99 and the class fee of 29.99.

This company is a scam, don't use them! This company scammed me after I canceled online and over the phone. They still took my money.
Like many people here, I started the free trial. After realizing that I did not get much from it and that I couldn't afford it due to Covid19, I looked into canceling. I then canceled online. That prompted me to call. I called and the robot told me my account was canceled and hung up. I figured everything was good until I checked my bank account. They charged me for the next month. I immediately reached out & they have been no help. Telling me I never canceled. Which I 100% did. There system just didn't register it. How is that my fault? All they do is try to give me deals on extra months which I do not want. This company is a scam.

Desired Outcome

I Would like a refund for the month they charged me for after I called to cancel.

Shaw Academy ignored my request to cancel my trial, citing I didn't have an existing account, then charged me and ignored my refund request.
On 4/18/20 I initiated a support ticket to cancel my trial a week before it was due to post the full membership. Shaw support stated they couldn't help me unless I offered a valid email address. I gave them the only email address I have, they stated I needed to provide my full name, phone number and payment receipt. I provided the info and the last four of my card but didn't have a receipt because they're system didn't register my email to send one. No response. I followed-up, no response. A week later they charged my card. I follow-up, no response. I opened a new support ticket and I was right back to where I started. I provided the original support ticket number and asked them to look into it. They sent the same generic email "your email is not valid" please provide name, phone number and receipt. I provided the info. No response. I elevated the issue citing frustration that no one was handling this issue. No response. This is ridiculous. I did everything I could to notify in advance. Their system can't track my email yet it has enough to charge my card. Very frustrating.

Desired Outcome

Full refund of membership charge, $69.99.

They offered a lifetime membership apparently in their claus they are not allowed to offer refunds in this circumstance , I pulled the trugger on the purchase so it's in the grey and they have done their best to accommodate me . Thank you

I joined a Shaw Academy Trial which is supposed to end on June 2nd and then they will charge my card. I want to cancel and am not given any options.
I saw Shaw Academy's advertisement on Facebook. I wanted to use their trial, so I signed up for it by providing my credit card. They charged only $1 to my card probably just to validate my card. Upon visiting the site as a member, I immediately decided to cancel the service as I do not like it. I went to the website, membership page to cancel. Upon asking me 6 times if I really want to cancel it, they took me to this page where they ask me to call a phone number to cancel. I have tried calling that phone number everyday but no one answers that phone.

They claim to be an educator and a reputed one, why can't they just let me cancel my membership using their website. Now I am afraid they are going to charge my credit card on June 2nd. With no option to cancel how do I make sure that my credit card is not charged. Please find attached all the screenshots.

I tried reaching out to them using their web support to no avail. Only a scam artist would take your credit card and then not give you any options to cancel. If I am not able to cancel this week, my only option would be to cancel my credit card which I don't want to do.

Desired Outcome

Cancel my membership please and make it easy for others to cancel the membership so that they are not scammed.

Shaw Academy Response • May 12, 2020

Dear Student,

As per your request we have cancelled your subscription.

We like so many businesses are encountering extreme challenges stemming from covid-19. The issues we face relate to staff challenges in all of our office locations including staff unable to attend work and also work from home.

This is compounded by a massive increase in student volumes given the sudden shock to the world with new levels of unemployment and significant amounts of people worried about their futures. This has put considerable strain on our teams in particular, the customer support.

We're sorry to hear of your less than satisfactory experience with Shaw Academy and hope you will accept our sincerest apologies.

Thank you

I am quite disappointed by this. I'm ashamed to say I did not research them before I signed up for the offer. I am certain they are vague for the purpose of misleading those who sign up and "forcing " them to carry on with course they don't particularly want. I've got a feeling that even if I had canceled in a timely manner, I still would have lost money somehow. They assure you when you sign up that they will remind you about the cancellation window. It's also on the membership page which has a countdown and when you go to cancel the subscription. But the next page alerts you that you will not be able to continue the trial classes even though that is what was offered. I also bought the bonus material ($40) since it came highly recommended as a good supplement but that is also no longer available if you cancel the subscription before the classes are complete. By the way, the bonus material is not really necessary unless you are DEFINITELY continuing to take the course. They bombard you with hard-sell emails and SMSs throughout the trial period, but not one of them is a reminder about the cancellation window as promised. It said I had one day left to cancel which was the day I took the last lesson and the day they also released the last portion of the bonus material I paid for. They quickly debited my account that same day for $70 and told me I was too late even though I had checked my account and the countdown the day before. It said one day left and of course it was the day I took the last lesson. I find that interesting. I am sorry I didn't cancel sooner as I felt like doing 3 days prior. I checked my email very thoroughly because I get many emails that I have to categorize and so I did some digging before the cancellation and after and I did not see anything resembling a reminder notice. I am not taking any of their courses. The course was good and I was glad I took it but it's not something I want to continue to explore as a career path. I followed through with the full module of 8 lessons and maybe I'll make my money back with the bit of knowledge I have. But I don't recommend them. I don't like the way they do business.

Although Shaw Academy teaches students some valuable skills, they are not completely honest about their business. I have taken several online classes through Shaw Academy. I started with the free trial and took the four week photography course. The class was live and I enjoyed it since photography is one of my hobbies. There was a lot of advertisement for the Advanced Diploma in Photography Program. This class was also live and I agreed to pay for it. Once I finished the class I wanted to discontinue my paid membership. After several attempts to contact Shaw Academy to discontinue my membership, they charged me again. Shaw Academy then offered me a life time membership at no extra cost. I took it since they would not refund my money. I gained some valuable insight that helped me through a career change.

As time went on, they kept advertising that their classes were still live. They stopped live classes though. Then Shaw Academy said its advanced classes were a EQ Level 5 Diploma and that is equal to an Associate's Degree in the United States. This is not true. The classes are not equal to an Associate's Degree in the United States. Most recently they took away my life time membership and said classes are no longer offered that way. I would have to pay for them again. I will definitely not make that mistake again.

I cancelled my membership during free trial period, but they charged me anyway. They now refuse to refund stating I did not cancel during trial period
I subscribed to a free trial membership. I then tried to cancel my membership during free trial period. The site does not let users cancel. It 's like they make the site crash when you try to do so (I checked online, and many other users experienced teh same issue on their site when trying to cancel membership).

I then asked my account to be cancelled by email. One support agent answered my that my membership would be cancelled within 48 hours. This was during the free trial period.

I realized weeks later that I was charged 49.99 by mistake by Shaw Academy. I asked by email to be refunded and also asked that my membership is cancelled (again) and my account deleted (again).

They keep refusing this solution, saying: "Since you did not cancel during your trial period, payment was processed as per the terms and conditions associated with your membership". And now they are proposing me to give me "6 month membership" free of charge in exchange...

This has been going in circle, and that lets me know they are really dishonest and that they do try to take advantage of people as much as they can.

Desired Outcome

I want to be reimbursed. I also want my account to be deleted, with all my information from their database.

The support email says I was supposed to be refunded within 5-7 business days. It has been 9 business days today and I have not received refund.

As so many other users complained about being scammed by ShawAcademy for several months after they unsubscribed, I blocked my card by security because I was scared of being stolen again, which costed me 15.

Not talking about the time for research about this fraud company, and the pain of renewing all direct debiting authorizations using my new debit card.

I am still waiting for a solution to be refunded.

Regards

I have not received the refund.
I feel ashamed fo these people. They steal money to people and the only to get them to refund is by threatening them on Revdex.com. They need to pay for what they do.

I have never received the refund on my account. They keep lying: first they say they can't refund for fake reasons, then they say they will refund but they never actually do it.

Nope. I haven't received money from your scam business.

The money you said you would not refund anyway. You lied several times by email saying you would not refund me, until you saw the bad review on TrustPilot.

I really feel that you're a bunch of unethical mns, and it feels good to see that so many of us are getting organized to expose your *** business practices to the world, using social and main stream media (press and TV).

Anyways, I'm still waiting for my money.

Regards
